Journey in Baltimore Review

Postby NealIsGod » Tue Sep 13, 2005 12:33 am

OK, here's my review of the Journey show in Baltimore last Friday night. MoMoreTails, please feel free to add your two cents!

And this being my 1,000th post, I want to dedicate it to RocknDeano, the ultimate Journey fan. Dude, come back to us! It's not the same without ya!

I didn't keep track of the exact set list, but they opened with Be Good to Yourself, followed by Ask the Lonely. Steve was in great voice. Highlights, for me, included:

Just the Same Way - Jon's duet with Steve was great. I have always loved this song, and it was great to hear the current lineup do it. I hope the next CD has a duet or two with Jon and Steve on it.

Still They Ride - the crowd really seemed to like thins one. You could sense the amazement from the crowd while Deen was singing it. After the song Steve came out and patted Deen and looked so proud. You can tell Steve is still in awe of the talent that surrounds him.

In Self Defense - This song fit right in with the theme of the night, which seemed to be ENERGY! I think the small venue (only holds 1,800) and the enthusiastic crowd helped the band to have a lot of fun. This song rocked.

Out of Harm's Way - I was above the crowd looking down, and was amazed by how many people were mouthing the words. I think most people there were hard core fans. The song sounded great live.

Every Generation - Very good live, as I expected.

Gone Crazy - LOVED IT. Neal shreds on this one. Ross was squirtiung water on the crowd from his mic stand all night. Perfect song for that guy to sing!

Other songs included ESC4P3, Don't Stop Believin', Stone in Love, Open Arms, Faithfully, Higher Place, Separate Ways, Chain Reaction, Who's Crying Now, Anyway You Want It, Lights, and Wheel in the Sky. The Encore was Lovin', Touchin' Squeezin'. I hope NoMoreTails will post any songs I missed!

This was my favorite Journey show ever. I never thought I would see them in such an intimate setting, and meeting Steve before the show was a bonus!

Love it, love it love it.

Seems like they really dig playing OOHW.

The apparent exclusion of FITH and TPIYH were made up for with ISD (I really think Neal's been here and BackTalk and heeded the "drop Voodoo Chile" cries) and GC.

Yo, NIG. Pre-Perry first set or not?

Only The Young is the only thing I think you missed, I think it was after ATL and before FITH.
All the new songs were the highlight for me, including Gone Crazy which I've had mixed feelings about, but it was cool live, especially with the crowd being into everything they did. I've always loved In Self Defense, which was better live with great backup vocals by Deen and Steve.
I love Higher Place and Chain Reaction but am surprised they didn't drop one of them in favor of TPIYH.
The best show ever for me as well, being down front and that close to the stage was really cool. ENERGY like you said. Great to be that close to Deen's furious drumming on OOHW and FITH. Steve was in fine form, as he apparently has been all tour except for the first few shows. Still They Ride is the best I've heard Deen sing so far, awesome job.
Good vibes between Deen and Steve like you pointed out, really between
Ross, Neal, Steve, and Deen. Jonathan seems a little more distant, maybe due to the whale separating him from the band somewhat. He seems to be taking everything in, whereas the other guys seem to be having more of a good time.
Same set as a couple of nights before in Vienna VA. I thought they'd be back to the three hour set for that show but had never expected the Baltimore show to be three hours, as it originally was scheduled to start at 9:30 I think. I wish they'd play this venue, Ram's Head Live again. It was well worth the 5hr drive but I doubt we'll be forunate enough to see them at that small a venue again.

Thanks NIG and No More Tails. The reports continue to get better and better. This band is definitely back and those big shoes have definitely been filled!

:?: NIG, any details on your Steve meeting? :?:

I gave details in the Augeri interview thread (the sticky thread). Here it is again:

Not much to tell. They were playing at a concert hall that is atached to a restauarant/bar and I happened to walk in the bar when Steve was there chatting with fans. I shook his hand, he asked me if I was going to the show, and I said, "Of course!" I told him I think he is a great singer and is doing a great job. He thanked me and I got a picture with him. He couldn't have been nicer to the fans. He just has an aura about him, very nice and likable.

Thanks NIG for bringing it here since I missed that paticlular post. (it belongs here also, don'tcha' think?)

Not much to tell, huh? Yes, that aura you speak of shows when Steve's performing. The band as a whole looks like they're having a great time on stage.

Not to mention I had to wade through 3...count 'em...three.....pages of PerryShite back to find your post in the Augeri Interview thread. So thanks for bringing it here, where it won't get lost in the shitffle.

Thanks for the kind words, NIG..I appreciate that. Welcome to IM status..I have unretired, and I have seen journeytroll's idiocy front row in the "Augeri Interview" thread... If I were to respond to him like I want, I would be forcefully retired....How Andrew allows HIM, is beyond me.

If you all scroll down, to journeytroll's "positive Thread" about Journey, you will see he is severely unstable as an individual.. I would seriously consider him a risk to be around. You need some medical attention dude..One week he loves Journey, the next week Augeri is horrible..the next week Journey kicks ass for 30 years, the next they blow...

Now he is asking which one to take to dinner...this dude needs to run in front of a bus...

Again, thanks NIG..you are a great guy. Joepa, the homo PM I sent you was definately sarcastic!

Welcome back, Deano. Let's not give piss takers any satisfaction any more.

And not one of you bastards congratulated me on Mogul status. I'll remember that...

How about replacing the picture of Neal with this recent one of you and Steve??

sounds like a fun setlist
