Well, IMO I think there are 2 things going on in this song:
1. Steve decided to go for that sound on purpose. The reason why I think this is because if you listen to his background vocals on the words, "only solutions", his vocals are clear - no rasp.
2. Also, Steve "double-tracked" his voice: which is a technique that layers 2 different vocal tracks on top of each other - to "thicken" the vocals.
Just my 2 cents

I think Perry sound terrific myself...much better than Augeri has ever sounded, and I like Augeri...in fact, I think Perry NOW sounds head and shoulder abouve Augeri....Free wrote:Not sure why, but I listend to "Only Solutions" today. But what struck me even more was how much he sounded like Augeri. Has Augeri ever sung this song? I bet he'd do it justice cause Perry does not get high in this song at all.
What do you think?

I thought he sounded great as well during the two shows I saw him NC....but a young Steve Perry is a little bit of stretch, IMO.The_Noble_Cause wrote:OpeningAct wrote:I think Perry sound terrific myself...much better than Augeri has ever sounded, and I like Augeri...in fact, I think Perry NOW sounds head and shoulder abouve Augeri....
Hi Joe Reardon and imaginary friends!
I saw Steve Augeri on September 3rd and he sounded immaculate. The guy sounded like a young Steve Perry. He was phenomenal. While I don't subscribe to the notion that Perry has totally lost his vocal capability, I do believe that present day Augeri is above and beyond what Perry is currently capable of.
Anyone who saw the FTLOSM tour knows this first hand.

So is saying that a hoarse, gravelly (albeit emotive) Perry of today "sounds head and shoulders above Augeri."

It has nothing to do with range, raspiness, or what key he sings in. It's the emotive depth of his voice. The way his singing feels to me when I hear it. Augeri just doesn't have that viseral quality. There are a lot of singers out there who can sound good singing a song, but it takes more than just a sound.

Yes, Perry affects me the same way. Augeri is a very good singer, but there will never be another Perry. But Perry is "retired", and Augeri is his own man and bringing a different style to Journey. It's amazing how some of us are open to Journey having a different singer, and some aren't. It seems to depend on our opinion of Neal and Jon. Those of us who understand and respect their talents and contributions to Journey seem more open to the "new" lineup than those who only saw them as backup musicians for Perry.

First of all, I don't think he sounds hoarse or gravelly....that was someone else's opinon, not necessarily a fact.The_Noble_Cause wrote:OpeningAct wrote:but a young Steve Perry is a little bit of stretch, IMO.

Good post NiG! How anyone could think musicians with the overwhelmng talent of Neal and Cain were merely backup musicians to Perry's vocals is a little mind boggling.NealIsGod wrote:ohsherrie wrote:I guess it's really just a matter of what you like better. ohsherrie wrote: There was definitely a magic to the music that came together as a result of the combination of their talents that isn't there without the three of them together. I'm not saying that no good music has been produced by the band as it is now, just that it doesn't "grab me" the way the Journey sound used to.

....and with all due respect to NIG, I would think we have reached a stage where a conversation about Steve Perry can remain so, stay on topic, without it being diverted to "Perry is retired and Augeri is the man now, yadda, yadda" stuff. The need to remind folks that Augeri exists everytime Steve Perry's name comes up should be long gone! The fans of todays line up have more confidence than that, right?
