That is why I want Steve to have that first hit. But Sadie is correct, it is a business decision and should not come down to emotion. But there are plenty of Steve sung songs that are worthy of radio attention, so it is not really a necessary issue. On the flip side, I have said all along that Every Generation has HUGE marketable opportunities.

I thought about this at lunch:

Has there ever been a band who has had a hit by someone other than the person regarded to as the lead singer?

Just for the sake of discussion here,.

Several people here have reminded me numerous times that Journey, as we know it, was started with two lead singers. If their reason for using the name Journey for the new band was because of name recognition,(even though I'm still not comfortable with that)they still have that recognition. The name of the frontman doesn't have to be an issue.

New lineup.
New direction.
New album named Generations.
Two lead singers.

I haven't heard the song New Generations and I don't know who sings it, but that sounds like a really logical choice if they're trying to establish a change in direction.

Every Generation is sung by Jon. Go to the Generations web page and you can listen to a clip of the song and read the lyrics. Very retro sounding song. You can also listen to the whole CD on AOL Music.

And you have a good point about the early years of Journey having multiple lead singers...the problem really is that Perry became THE lead singer of Journey. He became the face and the voice of the band. So, even though there was that brand name with multiple voices, that ceased during the 80's.

Didn't Jon once say that the reason his song "All That Really Matters" was left off "Frontiers" was because Perry wouldn't allow it...that Perry specifically wanted there to be only one voice of Journey? (I don't think the song belonged on "Frontiers", but that is not the point of bringing that up.)

OK, I'm trying to use that same logic here. Even though I think having Steve Perry as the "voice" of Journey was the best thing that ever happened to them, the band evidently had some problems with that. Why should they repeat what they thought of as a mistake?

Agreed. Why make the same mistake (if it was one) twice?

But they are NOT making the same mistake twice. The band IS a democracy and they ARE recording with other people singing. They over-did it, but they did it. And, as I already said, I agree with Sadie that the decisions should be based on the songs themselves. It is my emotional response that says "I want Steve to have the first hit". But, at the same time, I say that "Every Generation" has HUGE potential.

Well I do.
I think 'All That Really Matters' has as much right being on Frontiers as 'Gone Crazy' does on Generations. Besides, it sure as hell beats BackTalk!

Sure it has the "right", but I don't think it 'fit' quite right, or that it was good enough. Sure it is a better song than Back Talk, except I like Back Talk for personal reasons. But I don't think it would have really added anything to the CD...
