When you guys and gals listen to songs, what do these songs make you see in your mind? For me, when I listen to Butterfly, I have this weird vision of a butterfly trying to break out of its larva, and Steve Augeri is in the background crossing his fingers and clinching his teeth, hoping the butterfly can break through. It's a stupid vision, I know, but it only seems to happen with songs I don't care much for.

When I listen to Believe, I picture Steve Augeri and the rest of the band singing while pushing a buggy through the grocery store, LOL!!!!

I will state here and now that BUTTERFLY is my favorite track on the new album. I've heard it like 30 times already (I've had the CD for like a week now), and I absolutely love it.

I can already picture the video for it... shots of the band playing in the background, telling the story of a girl in her late teens or early 20s who's trying to "break out" of the monotony of her life... I see shots of her at work as an exhausted waitress, her at college with a shitload of books trying to study in the library... her at home dealing with a less-than sensitive boyfriend... and I see shots of Augeri singing the chorus while she walks in the background trying to find something to help her break out of her "prison" life. I don't see any nature shots in my video.... it's so obvious that someone would want to put the whole 'cocoon' 'larvae' butterfly thing into the video... but I totally see it as the metaphor it is about a girl trying to "grow up" in some way. The shots of the band would be in a kind of "blue' filter until the breakout scene, where the girl in the story somehow gets a break, and the filter changes to true color. Then at the end, we see the girl walk into a bar, and the band is playing, and they invite her onstage to sit on a bench while they perform the song to her.

Anyway, that's what I picture!

Great ideas Fernando! However, I would add at least one image of a butterfly flitting around in some scene. Nothing 'in your face', but there...

I have honestly been trying to think of a way to make a video for TPIYH using only my camcorder. Nothing is coming to mind though.

This thread reminds me of something I would find over at BT.
Coming up with our own imaginary music videos?
What's next?
Starting an official MR.com Journey prayer circle?

Actually posting news of the "new" James Bond by a dude is pretty gay...

I would rather have a prayer circle than talk about how cute another dude is.

Not sure about the visuals the song brings about - but I've always thought of "Seal" on this song, though taken collectively, it does sound more distinct of a new Journey/Augeri sound...still, I think someone in the band digs "Seal", as I've heard this influence before, I want to say something on "Red 13" but can't be too sure / haven't listened to it in a while...

James Bond movies are testosterone-driven action films whose audience is and always has been predominately male.
Journey, sad to say, is more associated with feminine connotations, than James Bond. When I broach the topic of Journey to a non-fan, the first words out of his mouth are almost always "you mean that girly ballad band?" ..they then tend to parodically start belting out Open Arms in embarassingly off-key falsetto.

Rock'ndeano wrote:I would rather have a prayer circle than talk about how cute another dude is.

Who was talking about how cute someone is?
The Bond character is inherently handsome by design. Assessing wether or not the newly appointed actors fits the part isn't in anyways gay, and to say anything otherwise, emphasises ur own on-going insecurities with your own sexuality.

Perhaps on "Kiss Me Softly" from "Arrival"?
Like "Butterfly", Augeri utilizes his sultry low range for much of the tune.

Do you like gladiator movies son ....haha...not to drive this more OFF topic from what we should be discussing, but,...what the heck...

So I was watching "Alexander" with the g/f the other night - at the end of the movie, in which we both winced at the numerous references to "gayness', as well as the unexplainably bad movie. She chimed in "Yeah, it's like they sat around and did a bunch of a drugs to come up with the concept of the movie", I said "well you know, Oliver Stone was recently busted for drugs", she said "what were they - 'gay' drugs?'"...we laughed...

Yeah, that movie is pretty incomprehensible and it goes on forever. What a bloated mess. They've recut it for a new director's cut dvd release, but I don't have the patience to sit through it again. Contrary to all of the surrounding media controversy, the gay content in the film is quite minimal.
However, there is a very nice sex scene between Alexander and some black/hispanic chick (whose name escapes me at the moment).

It was meant as a tongue and cheek thing....I don't care for the song, Butterfly, as much as Fernando obviously. I was just sharing this weird vision in my mind everytime I listen to the song. It was more or less a joke.

Those two songs - I have found myself skipping through..unless I listen to the cd at work, then I'm usually wrapped up into my programming and sometime don't realize I'm letting those songs play.

Yeah, they suck.
I am so dissapointed in Augeri's dismal solo offerings on this release.

That begs the question; why would Neal and especially Cain allow them to be included on this cd? It tells me they a) really didn't give a crap, b) were trying to appease Augeri, or c) it was a rush job.

I saw Butterfly live..Maybe the only time we ever will...it was ok..that was my time to hit the beer garden for a fistful of happiness.

You forgot option d).
Jon and Neal actually like the songs.
I know it sounds really far-fetched, but it's still a possibility.

What I can ascertain from Andrew's interviews, it seems that Augeri's wealth of written material was supplanted by Jon Cain's last minute material. As Augeri said, there was a "healthy competition" going on amongst the band members. I think Augeri's material was surpassed by Jon's in quality, so Augeri then had to whittle down his material to one or two selections. His material lost precedence and so I feel he chose two songs ("Butterfly" and "Believe") to represent the cream of the crop, so to speak.

Sure it is. Since when hasn't it been? The issue with you people is that you obstinately refuse to acknowledge that Perry's high range is even slightly diminished.
You live in a bubble impervious to facts and reason and where Perry still retains the golden, inimitable pipes of Infinity yesteryear.

Again, this is news to me. Augeri has always occassionally tapped into his low range. Listen to Tyketto, Tall Stories or 'Kiss Me Softly' on Arrival. This is nothing new.

perryfaithful wrote:The Gold standard by which everything else is failure??

First off, Augeri is using his low range for effect, not out of desperation.
BIG difference.
Perry had no choice but to sing everything in a muted Louie Armstrong-esque growl.

Oh c'mon TNC, that's an unnecessarily low blow. We've heard so many cracks about Steve Perry not being able to hit the high notes that PF's comment is completely understandable.

No, it's really not.
Steve Augeri currently utilizes his low range when he wants to.
Perry was utilizing it when had no choice but to.

ohsherrie wrote:We've heard so many cracks about Steve Perry not being able to hit the high notes

So?
What of it?
By and large, that is the truth.

ohsherrie wrote:that PF's comment is completely understandable.

No, it's not. Augeri isn't using his low range because his voice has withered away from use. There is no comparison between what I am talking about and what PF *wants* to get us talking about.

I mention that Augeri is using his low range on a song and she interjects some snide quip straight from outta left field.
U deem that acceptable?
I deem that subversion.

I think the reason why I don't like it is because it sounds like a lullabye and reminds me too much of that butterfly kisses song (based on the little girl growing up blah blah blah....) I guess if I had a teenage daughter I would probably appreciate the song more, but I just don't get the song.

I do know Augeri sounds tons better singing in a lower register. He just sounds more genuine, IMO.

I frankly don't like his voice all that much, except when he goes down to that register.
