OT- Thoughts on the new James Bond, anyone?

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Mon Oct 17, 2005 4:09 am

He's not the best looking actor to don the infamous tux and Walther PPK (that prestigious distinction going to Roger Moore) however, he'll do just fine, I think.
Any thoughts?
Or is James Bond passe and I am the only one who gives shit?
Here he is:

The last time I was really a Bond fan he was played by Connery, but I thought Pierce Brosnan was the best choice since then. I just don't see this guy as 007. He just doesn't have that look to me. Actually I think Huge Grant would have been good in that role. I don't know if he was considered though.

Never under serious consideration, but his name has been tossed about sporadically in certain fan circles. Mainly by those who long for a return to the days of a jaunty carefree punster-type Bond ala Roger Moore.

'Huge' Grant" huh? Wow...What kinda movies he been in? hahaha...

The only thing I have to contribute to this non-Journey topic is...when the heck did we loose Pierce as 007? I clearly did not get the memo....

The new Bond was officially announced and introduced on Friday in a Sony press conference in London.
But it's been known for about 3-4 months now that Pierce was officially out. The official PR reason being given is that producers wanted someone younger. Purportedly they were auditioning actors as young as 22 to 19! However, the guy they ultimately settled on is nearly 40 and actually looks older than Pierce.
Oh well.

I think Huge would be great at that cocky, tongue in cheek, "I know something you don't know" attitude that Connery was so great at. Roger Moore was OK, but I liked him better as Simon Templar. I think the films became a lot more special effect shoot 'm up driven with Brosnan than the original films were.

Yeah, agreed.
Roger didn't really play Bond as much as he just showed up on set and was his typically cheeky, smug. self-deprecating self.

An inevitable consequence of time.
A movie released today with the pacing of an old school Bond (be it Sean, Roger, or Dalton) would lead to half the audience walking out.
Kids today really have much more limited attention spans.

Sean was the only believable Bond for me. They should have called it something else after he left.

Hmm...so maybe I have the intellect of a 4 year old - but doesn't he spell his name as "Hugh" not 'Huge'? Perhaps this is an intentional over-sight by OhSherrie, but I hadn't heard those rumors...

I think Pierce quit cuz he didn't want to run the risk of being typecast.
And the official word did seem to be that UA fired him. If they did, I don't think Pierce cared.

I was excited when I heard it was going to be Doungray Scott.... know nothing about this other dude.

Pierce has been making negative comments about being fired for months now. And judging by the way he's always leaping at any chance to bash the Bond-producers, it seems he does care quite alot about the uncereminious way he was let go. He commented on this again as recently as Saturday saying to the British paper The Sun;

"It sucks, completely!"

"I was just getting the hang of it, you know? But they wanted to go younger. They wanted to reinvigorate the part."

"Whether they made the right choice, who knows?", he added,

"They're probably scared shitless, thinking, ‘What have we done?’"

That runs against all the quotes I've read where he was basically like, "Good riddance."

I though Pierce was the best and did not want to see him go. His sarcasm and delivery of the chauvanistic 1-liners was top drawer. No one's gonna top it. His greatest moment was the leering double-take on the girl in Spain right at the beginning of TWINE.

"Want to double check my figures?"

"Oh, I'm sure they're....perfectly ROUNDED."

I give a sh**!! My favorite Bond is Sean and then I like Pierce next. I don't know if I like the new guy, I was hoping for someone a little younger to take the part if they were going to go that way.

Bond Quiz: Can anyone name the Bond actors in order?

Warning Useless Bond Information:

Did you know that Roger Moore is actually older than Sean Connery?

Roger just turned 78 on Oct. 14th
Sean turned 75 on August 25th.

You have just been updated with Useless Information - LOL

George Lazenby
Sean Connery
Roger Moore
(Sean Connery returned for one movie)
Timothy Dalton
Pierce Brosnan

And you could also list David Niven who did a Bond spoof movie early on...

I think Brosnan made a great Bond...not as good as Connery, but better than Roger Moore IMO....he had more of an edge to him.....

Casino Royale...written by Woody Allen!

So since this new one will also be called Casino Royale...will it be a spoof as well? Or will it be the Ian Fleming version?

Bad decision, should have kept Pierce.
Since Woody Allen and Hugh Grant have been brought up, I think Hugh is more a Woody Allen type than a Bond type. Too goofy for 007.
How about World Gone Wild as a theme song for a Bond movie?

Sure can.
Barry Nelson.
Sean Connery. (he would go on to play Bond two more times after swearing off the role in 1967)
David Niven. (in the Woddy Allen/Peter Sellers Bond parody "Casino Royale")
George Lazenby.
Roger Moore.
Tim Dalton.
Pierce Brosnan.
Daniel Craig.

SuiteMadameBlue wrote:Did you know that Roger Moore is actually older than Sean Connery?

Yeah, although he proceeded him in age, Roger's youthful looks helped him get the part after Sean in "Live and Let Die". However, as time went on, Roger's natural age and vices caught up to him. The man's still a legend though.

When we play trivia, a lot of "non-movie" people cannot name George Lazenby.

Barry Nelson was a tv version. But I guess I asked which actors and didn't make it specific. Damn your good The Noble Cause!!!! You must be a Bond fan!!

Also with the trivia that I like to play, a lot of people think right away that Sean's older than Roger.

Suite...I'll play the trivia with the people you play with. Think I could handle it.

Oh yeah!! You would win anyone at anytime with movie trivia. You're the best one out there.

I usually can win the "useless information" categories - LOL

I personally thought Sean always looked older than Roger, until I just looked at his website. I think Sean is aging better now than Roger, just my opinion.

Well, you have to factor in that Sean has had his face covered by a beard for many years now. When was the last time he was devoid of any sort of obscuring facial hair? Yes, Roger looks rather bad, however, he managed to look rather dashing when he was sporting a beard (ala Connery) in 1996's The Quest!

At least 12 years. As for Roger, I didn't care for his look in The Quest. But then I have a tendency to not like beards as a rule. The acting was just fine however.

The Bond movies...the careers they launched and the careers they killed. Quite the pop culture discussion here.
