"..Get THIS GUY to the World Series"

Postby perryfaithful » Wed Oct 19, 2005 1:28 am

From The CHICAGO TRIBUNE

"Journey to Victory"

The White Sox have a theme song. And we're not talking about AC/DC's "Thunderstruck", which blares from the U.S. Cellular Field's sound system as part of the team's pregame ritual.

The Sox's have adopted Journey's 1981 hit "Don't Stop Believin'" as their postseason rallying cry, with A. J. Pierzynski blaring the tune in the clubhouse after the team's pennant-clinching victory Sunday. And in an "Almost Famous/Tiny Dancer" moment, the players reportedly sang the song on the flight home from Anaheim.

Now the Sox have invited former Journey frontman Steve Perry to Chicago as a guest for Game 1 of the World Series on Saturday at the Cell.

"A. J. said, "We've got to get this guy to the World Series,'" Sox vice president of communications Scott Reifert told the Tribune. "Now we're just trying to see what we can do and how we can do it."

Speaking about DSB, here's another article :)

http://www.chicagotribune.com/entertain ... 1289.story

QUALITIES OF LIFE
Here's how an '80s hit journeyed back to the charts

By Patrick Kampert
Tribune staff reporter
Published October 16, 2005

This story contains corrected material, published Oct. 18, 2005.

The song is pouring out of iPods and CD burners everywhere:

Just a small town girl, livin' in a lonely world

She took the midnight train goin' anywhere

It's "Don't Stop Believin'," the 1981 hit by Journey that's No. 5 on the iTunes rock list and still holding its own after nine weeks on Billboard's Hot Digital Songs chart.

What in the name of big hair is going on here?

The MP3 generation, usually partial to artists such as Kanye West and Gwen Stefani, has caused sales of digital music to rise more than 300 percent in the last year, jumping to $790 million in the first six months of 2005 from $220 million during the same period a year ago.

So what's up with "Don't Stop Believin'"? MTV, of course. The song's resurgence has been fueled in part by its presence in a key scene of the MTV reality show "Laguna Beach: The Real Orange County." Bob Stroud, resident rock historian and midday personality on classic-rock WDRV-FM 97.1 ("The Drive"), says he has seen this multimedia spillover before among his listeners (this sentence as published has been corrected in this text).

"When there's a mental picture or image put with a song, somehow there's a deeper connection than if it's just being listened to," he said.

Recently, a Hewlett-Packard commercial that employed the Kinks song "Picture Book" had the same effect on The Drive's listeners, Stroud said.

"It's the same thing with contestants on 'American Idol,'" he added. "[After] Bo Bice did 'Vehicle,' the Ides of March's Web site got hundreds of thousands of hits when kids found out who did that song originally."

Meanwhile, the guys in Journey, who reunited in '98 and released a new album, "Generations" (Sanctuary Records), a couple of weeks ago, are thrilled. They say they're seeing a new generation of fans at their concerts.

"Some songs do better than others, and that one has been reborn. The kids are singing it with us," said keyboard player Jonathan Cain, a Chicago native who co-wrote "Don't Stop Believin'" with guitarist Neal Schon and then-vocalist Steve Perry.

Cain, who attended Roosevelt University's music conservatory and was the main architect of the power ballads "Open Arms" and "Faithfully" as well, said the new exposure even pushed the band's "Greatest Hits" disc back on the charts. Sony is releasing a DVD of an '82 Journey concert in time for Christmas too.

"I felt it was a special song," he said of "Don't Stop Believin'." "It had a certain innocence to it. It still sounds fresh to me."

Apparently, the iPod voters agree.

With regard to the article SMB shared......

My 14 year old daughter has DSB as her cell phone ring now and it has nothing AT ALL to do with my relationship with Journey. She and her friends have it on the custom "Summer CD" they made together. A winner for that generation also...for sure!

There was another article on here a while back about the resurgence of the popularity of DSB from that TV show where somebody interviewed Steve about it. It all seems to me to have started with the movie Monster.

Perry is a Giants fan, which is a NL team, so he may do it since the Sox are in the AL. It's not like he's too busy these days!

Classic Journey music is also being featured prominently on such popular teen-culling shows as "Laguna Beach" and "The O.C."
Total smut television, in my opinion, but that's neither here nor there.

I've found that most guys stick pretty true to their league, even if it's not their team. I would love to see Steve do this, but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. He might do it because of the song. I mean, hell, it's a big complement. :)

It's not like he's too busy these days!

But Cain is FROM Chicago.. God I HATE the White Sox..Always have...Gangs and rappers have adopted their jerseys as "colours" and makes me sick...I hope Houston sweeps their asses.

I would love to see Perry go and have a story written about it. Talk about the right time to make a resurgence! Hello, Steve? It doesn't get any better than this. I am sure all the Styx fans would be pissed, because Perry would definately overshadow DDY, who was on Keith Olbermann last night. No offence to Dennis, but Perry is much more recognizable.

What Perry should do is sing the SSB for every home game the SOX do..Like Kate Smith did with the Flyers in the 70's. And for an added surprise, Neal could play guitar.

PF, is this a real story?

Sugar, I hate that the rapper gangs have done that to them, but the guys that are playing their asses off to win this series don't care about that. They just want to do their jobs and bring the honors home.

I would love to see Perry go and have a story written about it. Talk about the right time to make a resurgence! Hello, Steve? It doesn't get any better than this.

I hope he'll do what he did for Patti Jenkins and lend his support. It would mean so much to his fans even if he doesn't care about having a continuing career.

I am sure all the Styx fans would be pissed, because Perry would definately overshadow DDY, who was on Keith Olbermann last night. No offence to Dennis, but Perry is much more recognizable.

The National Anthem is one of the toughest songs to sing well. Hell, if that 3 chinned fatass Scott Stapp could do it, Perry should be able to do right after waking up out of bed.

I would bet my left nut Dennis DeYoung sings NA the first night...

I'd be glad to hear either one of them sing it. Of course I'd rather it be Steve, but I think that song would take a lot of preparation and rehearsal. I don't know if he would have time for that. It would be enough if he would just be there and lead the team(or the crowd)in singing DSB.

Ahem!!!!! I'm offended!! Dennis is WAY more recognizable in the Chicago area and most of the Midwest then Mr. Perry. I would be personally ticked. 8)

Keep the appendage. I think you may need it down the road. The SSB is truly a tough song to sing. While I would of course prefer Mr. DeYoung to sing it (hometown, big fan and all) I would be highly surprised to see Steve Perry tackle it...because it is such a tough song to sing.

And just what is your problem with the White Sox Deano? Hate is such an ugly, misused word.

Oh stop, you Styx girls. Dennis is great, but is NOT more popular than Perry in ANY state. You know that. I am willing to bet Kevin Cronin is up there with DDY in Chicago....

I would rather have Schon play the NA than either of the other guys...IMO..Neal has no chance of going "flat" and he doesn't need to rehearse.

Do you live here? I have nothing at all against either Steve P. or Neal. I can tell you as a born and raised Chicagoan, Kevin comes nowhere near as close in terms of popularity...perhaps because he left our fair state.

I honestly think a hometown boy out to get some of the honor. They can spread it around.

Will be interesting to see if Mr. Perry takes the challenge. Me, I'd bet against it.

OMG, you've got to be kidding. I guess you don't make it to the Midwest or the Illinois/Wisconsin states. There is NO way that Perry is more popular than DeYoung around here, no way. I'll make any kind of bet. Cronin? LOL, I don't think so. Dennis was just on the radio again and on tv like he always has been around here. More people around here know DeYoung more than they do Perry.

Good point PF, we did kinda get off track didn't we? The Sox have adopted the song and they want the man whose voice brought it to them. It's a tribute to Journey's music and Steve Perry whether he shows or not.
