Suprisingly not so awful!

I cribbed this from BT.
Someone was nice enough to post footage of Perry's last time singing with the guys. This was taken from the 1991 Bill Graham tribute and you know what?
Despite the song being lowered a notch or two, I think Perry sounds good.

Boy, it's really hard to say anything critical from this performance.. They sounded sad, and I think that was the intent, due to Bill Grahams death. Perry I am sure went to this on a whim, and never had a chance to get in vocal shape. Neal's guitar basically weeped on this.

There were two more songs they did that day; Faithfully and DSB.

I think I heard somewhere that Steve did make a last minute decision to go, not sure about it though. I've got that on VHS and it really is sad to watch, especially when Steve's trying so hard to get the crowd to sing "Lights" and they just sort of stand there.

I thought it was sad, though I don't think Perry sounded very good at all...It does go to show that with some training he had the ability to bounce back into shape for FTLOSM. I think the crowd just kind of sat there because I think San Francisco in 1991 wasn't comprised of a great deal of Journey fans. Bill Graham was a legend but his name in the big scheme of things isn't normally associated with Journey, I think there's more of a nostalgia for the 60's & early 70's associated with Bill Graham Productions. I never got the impression that Journey was a favorite son of San Fran.

I wasn't one of Steve's good days vocally, but you could tell the foundation was still there, it just needed a little shoring up. :)

That makes sense. There was very little mention of Journey in that Bill Graham tribute show they did on VH1(wasn't it?). In fact, I think Herbie was the only one who mentioned them. Wasn't SF where the "slick, contrived, commercial, corporate," stigma started? For example, they wanted SF music to be represented by Jefferson Airplane rather than Jefferson Starship.

Deano, Nig, and Abita: These are the same Bill Grahm recordings we have, right?

I thought he pulled it off fine. Lower, more rasp, but they sounded like JRNY.

Well, no he sounds awful, but I can't criticize him this day.

Yes, these are the same recording we ripped off and copied, ERRRRR, shared with each other. There was rumour that DSB was done too. Herbie talked about Perry being such an asshole that day. Something about, "I don't know the words." herbie said, here, write em down. Perry said back, "You write em down!"

Yep, I heard DSB was the third #. Unavailable to us at this time. Lights outshone faithfully....god posterity piece for us diehards to have altogether.

Well from the video, after Lights, they appeared to be done. Must have been the 1st number.

I agree with Joe. Perry sounds better here than he does on an overwhelming majority of my FTLOSM bootlegs. I'll go so far as to say he sounds good.

Odd in a lower key, but how about Neal's bluesy take on Faithfully...and a People Get Ready lick before Perry's "ad libbed" ending.

You know what? That's a sad performance. Not sad as in sucky, sad as in... sad. By 1991, Journey should have had 2 or 3 more albums since ROR. Instead, that was their last live performance (Neal, Jon and Perry, I mean), wasn't it?

Not the Perry of old, for sure! BUT, not bad. Would not want Perry and Journey together again. BUT, would love to see a new more soulful Perry cd-ERIC

When Perry laid down that mic, those were the last words he sang.

It was his last live performance with Journey. He did FTLOSM in '94 and toured with it. Then he sang TBF to record it. Then he recorded I Stand Alone and did the video in '98. He's done some background vocals for some people in the meantime. He wasn't quite through yet, and I hope he's still not.

Well of course I meant live.

The list of projects you mentioned are all shit. So I don't count those.

I was so turned off by his behaviour during that time period, I turned my attention to all out unadultered sex..as much as could be had. FTLOSM was shit.

Thanks,Noble. I enjoyed that a lot. Part of the beauty of Steve Perry's singing is the emotion that most others lack.

That was ok not too bad. It still had that Steve Perry soul. I'm not near an instrument, but it sounds like Lights has been lowered to C...from the original key of D. It still sounds good in that key. Some songs can be lowered and it still sounds ok....others if you lower them at all they just sound god awful. That raspyness in Perry's voice I discussed earlier is clearly evident in this tape. Appears to be permanently there, whether he's been out doing tons of shows or not. That's the damage that started in 81-82.

Sorry about the problem with the link, I copied it from the now closed BackTalk thread that TNC copied the first link from. You may find it still there. The tread is called "Did Steve Perry Really Do This" I believe.

It was actually the audio for both Faithfully and Lights. I saved it at work. Tomorrow I will try to host and post it for you.
