GENERATIONS is Journey

The Journey sound does exist without Perry, the two new instrumentals on Time3 were evidence of this, imo.

I know NMT, I'm just talking about the way I hear it.

That may be the problem. You are hearing this, but not listening. How can you only "hear Perry" in Journey? Come on Sherrie, that is regoddamdiculous.

Sugar, I never said that all I hear. I also said I'd never mistake Perry singing with another band as Journey. I'm just saying, like I've said so many times before, that it's the vocals that are the most promenent sound for me. That doesn't mean I don't appreciate good musicianship. I've told you how I feel about Neal's and Jon's talents. I'm just not as tuned in to the instrumental work unless I'm listening to an instrumental piece. If I'd heard any of the songs from either of these cds on the radio without knowing it was Journey, I wouldn't have assumed that it was Journey because I'd have known it wasn't Perry. The vocals are the identifying factor for me.

First, how can Journey try too hard to sound like Journey? I think Neal was influenced too much by fans who demanded heavier rock songs. Journey had been as much ballad-oriented as it was rock-oriented. For me the issue isn't the change in vocals but the guitar and drum performances. Neal's guitar used to be so much more melodic. Sure, there have been edgier, in-your-face rock tunes in the past, but it shouldn't be "how much" Neal plays, but "what" he plays. I don't hear his guitar soar any more. Listening to the classic hits, his guitar was such a compliment to Perry's vocals...its as if Neal's guitar was "singing" to you too. Now its more of a brute power approach. Deen's drums is still very heavy. His intensity is so different than Steve Smith's. Deen's playing has a hard heavy sound to it...Smith used to be equally intense but his sound was more precise, the notes played in almost surgical precision. He is an excellent hard rock drummer and emerging vocal talent as well, but I don't feel his is the best drummer for Journey. Generations tunes remind me of Journey concert jam songs with lyrics put to them. This album has lamentably blurred the line between Journey and SoulSirkUS, in my opinion.

Calbear, are you serious?

Neal's guitar soars on Generations. Melodic playing? Have you not heard Faith in the Heartland, The Place in Your Heart, A Better Life, Butterfly, or Beyond the Clouds. Each of those has soaring, melodic playing by Schon. I suggest you listen to the CD.

I would say that 'soaring' is a very accurate description of Neals work on Generations. Well put.

I understand what Calbear94 is saying in regard to the guitar sound. In fact I think he/she hit it right on the money.

I'm not saying Neal's playing wasn't skillful and soaring on Gens, but I think it was a lot more melodic in the classic stuff and on Arrival. Neal has even said that he saw his guitar as an extension of Steve Perry's voice. He also said, I think it was in Andrew's interview, that he wanted this cd to feature an edgier, harder driving guitar sound. Which is better, is in the ears of the listener. I'm sure it's more fun to play air guitar to Gens.(:wink:)

I disagree. I really believe Generations has more soaring melodic Neal guitar than any other Journey CD.

Let's argue this and see where we come out..This is a good topic. In fact, don't respond, I'll post a new topic.

The music/songs doesn't go against the grain for me. It seemed like they were still finding their new voice with Arrival, but they have settled into things with Generations.
