I didn't know why Steve Perry may have left Journey before reading this board, but what keeps me from being a bigger fan of current Journey isn't their past treatment of Steve Perry or anything else to do with him. I know I'll be attacked for saying it, but I just can't get into the new lead singer's voice as much. I'm not saying he's bad, but it's not a voice that stands out as unusually great or one I enjoy listening to all that much after a couple of listens. However, I think the Journey musicans are incredibly gifted and talented. I do like "A Better Life" but I feel it is lacking something.(maybe more emotion?) When I listen to the new Journey, I do try to see them as a new band, so I enjoy the music (mostly). I know I'll be attacked for this- sorry if i offended.

Why would you be attacked for that? Perfectly honest, and an opinion; not some agenda.

I felt the same exact way at first. I was defiant..I was so pro Perry..But I saw them in concert, and was changed. A), Augeri was awesome live, and B) The only way to hear these guys live was to accept the current lineup.

Why would u be attacked? If u don't like his voice, that's cool. I don't understand it, but hey whatever. You're certainly entitled to your opinion. I live both mens voices and sometimes I find myself liking Augeri's better. Nearly as high pitched as Perrys, but without that grating shrill oil screech quality.

Wow, Andrew, You really are a glutton for punishment, aren't you? Maybe he knows you will be asking the hardass questions....and we all know he doesn't answer those.

It's Perry's loss, the way I see it.

No, no, no....sorry, but IMO that's incorrect.

As a lead vocalist myself, I can understand what he meant by "to make it mine":

To crib and quote from above:

"SP: He would make a suggestion and I would say that I would try to sing it but thenI would not be able to believe it, or own it for myself, so I would have to throw in a couple of changes or make additions to it to make it mine.""

On our CD, I'm singing my husband's words (except for the titile track, which I wrote). I had to make a TON of changes in words & melodic structure so I would be able to convey the meaning and emotion properly.

If you don't believe it yourself, how can you possibly convey it to others?

According to the bios that I've read he finished high school and started in a college but dropped out to pursue a music career. Obviously a good choice. I think the fact that he doesn't have to work to "pay the bills" confirms the common sense in his business related choices. The success of Journey during his era attests to the choices he made musically.

That may be true for some singers including Perry, but than there are singers who almost never wrote a lyric like Elvis and Sinatra......They seem to make songs their own.

Maybe it's because they weren't songwriters? Perhaps because they didn't write themselves they didn't feel the need to express their own emotions in the lyrics of a song, they just adapted to what others wrote. Just a possibility.

True OS,

But there are some singers who do write lyrics and have covered other people's song successfully. I think it depends on the individual. There is no right or wrong way.

how can you repeat yourself so many times saying the same thing in different incantations and verses .... don't you go mad with it? no one changes their mind they just change the way they say it or change the way someone else has said it. this is sheer madness.

Doesn't hurt my feelings, it really doesn't matter, the results are the same. I'm surprised more by your going to school in Hanford.

I'm not obsessed with Journey as I am with Styx (LOL), but didn't Steve Perry go to high school in Lemoore? I don't know if it's the same high school as Hanford.

shows how much you all know.

He went to Newbury Park High School for 2 years.

Don't challenge me..I have the school pic with good ole boy in it.

Also, Heather Locklear went there too, and yes, I had a boner all day long for her....

I don't know. I know he lived in Lemore at some time. It may have been a consolidated school system.

You're welcome :)

When I get bored I love to "google" and find out information. I like Journey's music, but I never knew "behind the band" or all this information. I'm learning something new everyday :)
