I don't know what this means. The cd clearly says Journey on it - that's what it is. Van Halen w/ Hagar doesn't sound like Halen with Roth, but it's still fucking Van Halen. Why? Because the cd says so.

Play the early pre-Perry albums for your son. Ask him what he thinks it is. The same rule applies. Despite what he may think, it is still Journey.

Here's the key: he said "sort of". And that is accurate. It does not sound like the "Journey" he usually hears you play and he probably knows that "that Journey" will not be putting anything new out so he can make the assumption that "new to him Journey" would not be "Journey". But once you asked, he did say it sort of sounded like Journey.

You're right about the sound Dave, he knew it was close, but not exactly the same. However, I haven't really talked to him about the "Journey" situation. We talk about Harry Potter, LOTR and Chronicles of Narnia. He has no idea about new and old Journey.

Why should everything sound like classic Journey?
"The Time" and "State of Grace" from Red 13 did not sound like classic Journey at all, but they were still good songs. I have no problem with Journey breaking new musical ground as long as the songs remain strong.
An example of breaking new ground in a bad way would be track 6 on Generations. It doesn't sound like classic Journey, and taken on it's own innovative merits it still sucks.

Wrong again. Tracks 1,2,3,7,8,and 13 are all very Journey-ish. How many Journey albums do you own man? It sounds like you only own the greatest hits. Not every track on every album was a radio friendly toe-tapper. They have always done more eccentric, offbeat stuff.
"Generations" merely continues this tradition (though some would argue too far).

So when I do the math. I liked Remember Me ( 1 out of 1) I liked all of the EP ( 4 out of 4), and I liked probably 7 out of 13 or 14 songs off of Arrival. Which is half of the CD. Still ALL of thge above sounded like Journey to me.

Red 13 is generally known as a different direction, kind of an experiment for the band, isn't it? To me, that is NOTHING like classic Journey. Gens sounds, to me, more like Journey than Arrival does. I think Gens is the best album since Frontiers.

That's what I said. Tracks 1,2,3,7,8, 13 sound like Journey. Maybe the others aren't distinctively Journey, but I think they still are very Journey-ish. Again, not every Journey song in their vast catalog was an immediately catchy top-40 toe-tapper. I think you need to go listen to some of the earlier albums, get familiarized with some deep cuts. At the moment, you sound like the type of fan who would say that the only good song on "Departure" is Any Way You Want It and the rest is disposable trash.

Disagree. They are still playing it fairly safe. As Neal said recently in an interview about the cd..."we are def. not trying to re-invent the wheel at this point."

Arrival sounded like Journey trying too hard to sound like Perry-era Journey. The breakout tunes were the ones that sounded a little different, because Journey is a little different. Songs like Kiss Me Softly and We Will Meet Again showed a glimpse of a new direction for the band. But Arrival definately sounded like Journey.

Red 13 was very different for the band. First, the mix was rough but it brought an intensity and energy to the songs. Only I Can Breathe sounded like the Journey we all recognize. But The Time, State Of Grace and Walking Away From The Edge rank among the absolute best work Journey has done post-Perry.

Generations is the best full-length CD since Frontiers. And it is very similar to Frontiers in that there are a lot of the more experimental sounds to it. I like the mix of styles. There are definately songs that are unmistakenly Journey. There are others that are Journey pushing new ground. Then there are a couple that miss the mark a little. The CD may have benefitted from a different track list or maybe one substitution but it is a very good CD that harkens back through ALL eras of Journey. I hear nods to the pre-Perry era and a HUGE representaion of the Infinity-Departure era. There are a couple songs that fit right in the Escape-ROR era. And they all sound like a 'new' Journey! I htink the band overdid the multiple vocalist idea but I applaud them for not worrying about any "boxes" the fans think they should fit into.

With Neal and Jon, there will always be songs that sound like the Journey we remember. But they are also branching out. Sometimes it works (Red 13), sometimes it doesn't (Believe). But it is all Journey...

My 10 year old and 5 Say the same thing to me, all you ever play is Styx and Journey. I put Generations on the day I got my copy, had it cranked up when they got home from school. My youngest asked if that was Journey, I said yep, than my oldest said it was good and said she never heard this song before, and if it was new.....Quess Mississippi kids are just smarter -ERIC

No NIG, I wasn't trying to start anything. I would have thought that, by now, you would know that. I've said before that if I had heard any material from the band on the radio I wouldn't have immediately thought it was Journey, but I would have thought it was good. I associate the Journey sound with the Perry voice, but that doesn't mean I think everyone does.

Like I said to Dave, I don't talk to my grandson about Journey. So he had no idea what he was saying as it applies to this board or the Journey situation.

I was implying that, because of what you listen to, your son has been influenced to think that Journey (with Perry) and Perry solo, are what equal Journey. I didn;t mean that you have told him the situation.

I didn't think you did Dave. I was just using the quote from you to make sure everyone knew that I didn't coerce him into saying what he did. It was just an innocent statement from a little boy. I don't know if he knows the difference between Perry solo and Journey or not because I've never asked him.

I don't know why you see it that way, and I'm sorry you do. I respectfully suggest though, that since your feelings about it are coming from something you inferred from what I posted, rather than anything I intentionally implied, the problem must be with you, not me. I meant nothing negative by anything that I said.

Do you really think everyone is supposed to think the band sounds the same now as it did with Perry? That just seems completely unrealistic to me.

Are we not allowed to discuss the different ways we hear the music, even if we like what we hear?
