Can We Be Nice On This One???????????????????

Postby heardonthestreet » Wed Nov 23, 2005 1:29 am

If another Q&A interview happens, what question would you ask Perry? Only about things that are interesting enough to want him to answer. Can we please be nice about this? It might be interesting.

I saw a sig on BT of that pic from the liner of Perry's GH's +5. It's of his eyes. I would ask Perry if that is an "Easter Egg" in his rt. iris. It looks like a figure of Perry in tails. I'll always see him there, until I find out otherwise, lol.

I had heard a long time ago that Perry does art paintings, so I would ask him, if that were true & and if so, what kind of pictures does he like to paint?

I would ask him about his volunteer work, since HOTS never elaborated on it when asked multiple times.

I'd ask if the rumors are true about him doing the voice over singing in the new Jimmy Durante biopic.

I'd ask him that since he knows how to play drums, bass, and keyboards (and can most likely "handle" playing at least RHYTHM guitar) and also multi-track himself on backing vocals "ad nauseum" (meaning, a TON of different Perry "back up" harmonies a la "Enya"- hmm...up for a physical challenge, Steve?) would he or did he ever consider a "Prince" type solo album - a literal "one-man band"?

To what does he attribute the change in his voice between the 10 years of 1978-1988? In hindsight, is there anything he would have done differently, voice-wise, to have possibly prevented any long term damage? Possibly eaten more beef, perhaps?

You know he does, he even talks in the abstract.

If he'd actually answer, I'd ask if he feels he could really do a tour at this point, physically and vocally.

Didn't he say, either in the classicrock interview or Rockline, that he couldn't tour like he used to?

I too would love to hear an answer to this one. Though I think for it to be truly considered, it would need to be worded a little more cautiously. Though Perry occassionally mentions it, I don't think he really wants it known that he doesn't sound the way he used to.

This isn't a bash on Perry, so for you overly sesnitive 'Loons well on ur way to giving me grief I say go piss yourselves.

Yeah, I don't remember which one, but he definitely said he couldn't tour like that anymore. I think that was the UJB interview, then in the classicrock interview he said if it was up to me I'd still be doing it, but there's so much more to it than that, or some cryptic bullshit like that.

No oversensitivity here TNC, just a friendly reply to your post.

He did a interview for FTLOSM in which the interviewer asked him something about his having electronically altered his voice to make it deeper for the album. Steve replied that his voice had altered itself and become deeper and raspier over the years.

You know, I think he really did not want to tour TBF, hip problem or no hip problem, but it sounds like maybe he regrets not being able to do it at this point. Still, I wonder if he would really go through with it if he was able to. And what does if it was up to him mean? His he implying Journey is keeping him from it? I don't think so, I think he means his ability is keeping him from it.

Definitely I think he means health issues, just things he's not willing to go into. I can't imagine he'd ever agree to not touring as some kind of post-Journey agreement, even if only out of spite.

Think about it - we all know people who are around Steve's age (56). Could you see any of them touring the country with a rock band? Not everyone can do it when they get older and the aches and pains of aging set in. Hell, I am already feeling them and I am not even 40!

I agree, but to clarify, I meant being kept from touring as part of Journey, not in general.

Especially not vocalists. The musicians can replace their instruments a lot easier than the singer. There are singers older than Steve that still tour, but I doubt that they play more than a couple shows a week. I don't know how many of them toured as intensly as Journey did for their first five or six years either.

I certainly agree that it can be a problem for vocalists more than musicians, but there are plenty of them as old or older than Perry who still do it. The Stones do huge tours every few years, not that Mick has a great voice but he can still do about what he was ever able to. How old is Steven Tyler?(same comment as Jagger). Sammy Hagar, Paul Rodgers has to be older than Perry and was sounding better great last I heard him. Eric Clapton still better than ever. So there are a number who can do it. The problem with Perry is that he was ridden too hard early on, then not at all for too long.

Yeah, nobody I can think of went through the kind of touring that Steve Perry and Journey did for 5 years straight, stopping only to record for months at a time (78-83). Perry pushed himself too hard, and I think emotionally and physically it took it's toll much more so than touring would have on screamers like Sammy Hagar or Steven Tyler. Sammy is fucking inhuman. How anyone can do what he does at his age, having lived the kind of life he's lived is unimaginable. He's got his ups and downs live too, but unless he's on his 3rd liver, I have to think that some clean livin' eventually has to enter into the picture on some of those old roadhorses.

I've never sung professionally, but I did take vocal lessons when I was young and I've done some church function type soloist stuff over the years. I have to imagine that real singing with the range, control and tone modulation that Steve used must be a lot harder on the cords in the long run than just screaming to some semblance of a melody. Hell, who would know if they hit a flat note, their voice cracked, or how many counts they held a note? What's that saying, "of those to whom much is given, much is expected". I don't think anyone would have the kind of expectation of a lesser singer that people have of Steve.

I've never sang professionally also
but I have had a few years in college choir
and we did mostly operatic stuff

Other than that I have played around recording
sometimes up to 6 hours or more a day
never bothered me
but it was at my own pace and I wasn;t singin 110 percent
and could stop for a rest

I've covered Steve Perrys stuff and those high notes take a toll
I sometimes can't imagine how he did it

I think someone hit a great point
The band in the early years
toured and recorded endlessly

It takes its toll on everything
but Steve was the only one who couldn;t just buy new equipment

When a amp wore out
they got a new one
When Neal guitar started losing its tenacity
He got a new one
Strings drumheads
all could be replaced
Except for Steve voice
If he strained it
he had to deal with the pain

Don;t think a singer especially one that goes for that long at that range
is not going to have some soreness
Sometimes a cup of throat coat can soothe
but if he was stretching and wearing the chords faster than they could come back to shape there could be damage

A voice generally does deepen a bit with age
and he may have lost the top end due to the continual load.
He was dealing in a range that isn;t really natural for a males voice
and heck for that matter even a femalles and hit some of those notes amazingly with what sounded like to me to almost be in a chest voice

I think he still can sing
but he has to be satisfied with staying more in his natural range.
I have on rare occassions heard him sing on a few chords in a more barittone range and its even much more resonant

I always used to like to sing the Pat Benatar stuff. Even my mom would say my voice sounded better lower. I was placed as second soprano so I could hit the notes but its a matter where you resonate the best not just the ability to hit the notes...

The ability of the human voice to soar above the wings of notes is trulty magic and no 2 people have the same exact instrument
Each is a one of a kind

If I were to say anything to Steve Perry
At this moment it would be
Live your life
eat right
exercise
keep your body and mind fit
Run on the treadmill
and donlt forget your voice
hone those magic pipes of yours
Be the best you can be
Cause someday they may be the key to open heavens gate
