Got into this one late, but with regard to smoking....I can name a few "great" singers who are smokers...Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole, Sam Cooke being several, but more relevant here is Geoff Tate, Paul Rogers, Freddie Mercury, Rob Halford, and lots more I'm sure.

Just like everything, smoking affects different people's voices in different ways. Some people can smoke like chimneys and drink a fifth of Jager and still get up and sing their asses off, but more often than not their 3-5 year career longevity masks the later damage that smoking does to their voices.

For a long time I was convinced that smoking wasn't affecting my voice, and after 15 years of smoking and hitting the age of 30, I realized it was slowly destroying my voice and if I didn't quit I would sound like a 55 year old Steve Perry by the time I was 35. After quitting for good, it does come back 98% of the way, but I know there are things I've lost I'll never get back.

Don't some drink Jagermeister to alter their voice before a concert?

Yeah, I guess that's true.

I'll put it out there though, and take my chances.

ohsherrie wrote:For Generations, if they had promoted and marketed it right they had a chance, but IMO, they seemed to take the attitude that they'd give their "core fanbase" something and say to hell with it.

That's the way I see it as well. Easy way out and a built in excuse.

ohsherrie wrote:Maybe the disappointment over Arrival, or the general unacceptance of new material, broke their spirit, I don't know, but I think they've given up on success for any new music under the Journey name. Maybe that's why they're more into other projects aside from touring the Classic Journey catalogue.

Sad, but quite possible. I guess that is what is so frustrating for me as a fan...

I can agree with most of what you said. It was just another idea behind 'why' they let HH go. But you gotta admit, some of your beliefs might just be ones that make you feel better. But they are unknowns. You "gotta believe" that HH was looking for a way to fire Perry? Maybe HH was only interested in making Journey money and he knew Perry did that for them...

With a title like Generation you'd expect some changes but this is so out of character with the band.
What the heck are they trying to portray?
Perhaps this appeals to the current musiic consumer
Sort of reminds me how I used to laugh at Justin Timberlake
when he made those poses and was expected to be taken seriously.

Ross taking a nap
Neal well he looks a bit constipated
Deen thinks he still is handcuffed
Jon....well he;s wondering if he should get Neal some KAOPec
Steve Augeri at the door not knowing whether he;s coming or going

Wonder what that means
Guess he'll have a quick get away
Theres no movement at all in the picture
Its blank and devoid of emotion

I always liked this photo, that is why I used it. As TNC pointed out, the band have done worse. The Red13 pics showed a happy, comfortable band. The huge pic TNC posted showed Steve "out front" where he should be. But the rest of the guys just llok goofy. What is with Neal's smile????? The promo pics on Andrew's page make Ross look like Dame Edna!!! This picture, and the one I use at BT show a serious band. I like the look and it is "standard band photography".....but it SURE AS HELL beats the TBF photo picture which (to me) is EVIDENCE that Perry was planning his 'escape' or that he 'never felt like part of the band'. (Incidentally, I used this pic at BT but was asked not to because it was never officially approved by the band for promo use...)

Maybe Cain no longer likes ROR, but he wasn't ashamed of it as he was making it, Dean.
Wake up man.
Cain's influence is all over the blasted thing! He was Perry's partner in crime so to speak.
As far as I'm concerned, they both equally belong in the brig enduring a round of testicular shock therapy.

Absolutely. I think Cain had no problems during ROR because he and Perry had a shared vision. I think Perry just gets all the heat. Like I always say: the vocalist gets all the praise AND all the blame. Neither one is correct.

I agree, I think Cain was fine with the pop direction as much as Perry was. But I think since Perry was producer and the one who was insistant on the way the album was done he deserves the a bigger portion of the blame for Smith and Valory's exit though the others share in the responsibility. But I don't think he's anymore reponsible for the material than Jon is.

what were they thinking...those expressions are DOUR there is nothing
appealing at all even the clothes for middle aged men could be more youthful as well as the shoes; put some humor in the picture and smile
my goodness you'd think someone had punished them and threatened them with a good beating. it looks like they are sad and miserable; not a rock and roll band. i wouldn't buy any of their music and i don't. now, i see why. they are just pathetic. oh but jon looks mighty fine just wish he would take off the blue and black pants. is this what happens when you turn 45; you turn into your dad.

LOL
They don't look that bad
they're not models
guess they never learned to sell it to the camera
they are musicians
when the music stops
hhhmmmm silence
who are they
just some guys standing in front of a camera
thinking oooh goes my gut look too big

:P

I agree the photos lack emotion and enthusiasm
but you got to figure
maybe they were taking photos for a hour or so and were just bored and couldn't wait to be done with the whole bit

Jon is looking good except he's got to lose the tight around the ankles look
Looks like he;s wearing riding pants

That's because it's not cool for a rock star to look interested. Showing emotion and looking bubbly is for Jessica Simpson. Rock stars are suppose to 'taunt' the camera and be cool and mysterious or look like hard asses. It goes with the genre.

oooops, said ass.

A bit of a "grabby-hands" pic, dontcha think?!

A few other observations:

1. Neal looks like Paul Stanley's long-lost brother.

2. Deen looks like Al Pacino's son, and

3. Ross looks like a freaking MANNEQUIN.

You are absolutely right...!

Not taking care of your voice, by smoking & drinking excessively will cause harm to it.

Just look at Steve Lukather ( Toto guitar wiz ). He still has a great voice, BUT listen to him singing Rosanna 23 years ago and his voice now....you can evidently hear how his voice has changed since then.

Then there is also the problem with tenors ( hi pitched singers )....for these guys its a completely different set of problems. As they age, their voice sometimes just cant reach the peaks that they used to when they were younger. ( e.g Steve Perry, Russell Hitchcock (Air Supply), Lou Gramm, to name a few ) Peter Cetera still sings great, but even he's taken it a key lower for his songs nowadays.

Cheers.
