Even they have their moments.
There's some valid stuff both on ROR and TBF.

Well TBF definitely had some good moments, but ROR, sorry theres one maybe two songs on there that even remotely sound like Journey, in any era.

I actually like GCHI, BGTY is primo Journey '1981-1983' and thats about it. Don't even start me on IBAWY...oh lord what a piece of shit. And who needs another song like WCTNGOF, I fucking hate that overrated Perry crooning another god dam love song, I'd rather listen to a recording of me stabbing myself in the foot.

You like the pre-Perry stuff, but not the truly great stuff? That's just beyond the realm of belief to me. :? I can barely listen to most of the pre-Perry stuff. Of course, we all like what we like. :) Do you not like the post-Perry stuff either?

I actually think WCTNGOF is slightly overlooked.
While ballads aren't necessarily my cup o' tea either, I have to admit, this is one of the band's better ones.
Neal does some nice melody work on it, too.

Steve Perry will always be my favorite singer Lori, but there's just no denying good music no matter who performs it. :)

WCTNGOF is a Masterpiece. It would never have been a hit, but vocally and instrumentally it was perfection, IMO.

I love the pre-Perry stuff, I personally love most of the songs and some of them are in my top 5 favorite Journey songs. I do love a lot of the Perry era songs, especially the three Rolie/Perry era, I feel was their absolute finest hours. I'm not a huge fan of the '80's Cain/Perry era, that I will say without disregard. And I really liked TBF, I thought that such a step forward from ROR its not even funny. And I love the new line up, I didn't like Arrival very much, it had some great moments, but overall just seemed to try to hard to be the '80's version of Journey. I think Augeri is very talented singer, granted, not as talented as Perry, especially in his prime. But a very talented man nonetheless, he also seems to be a very humble man with a good heart, not like the selfish head-case that Perry seems to be. And since that is my opinion, I do believe I'm entitled it. ;)

:) Of course you're entitled to like what you like, we all are. We have some very diverse musical tastes on this board, I guess that's why we're here, we're allowed to have that diversity.

Personally, I have a hard time listening to some of the pre-Perry stuff. I don't enjoy that musical style or Greg's voice that much. Of course I love most of the Perry era, ROR and TBF being my two favorites.

I also enjoy Arrival and Generations. I think you hit the nail on the head in your accessment of Augeri's talent, and he seems to be a pretty easy going guy from everything I've read. I don't think I'd call Steve Perry a "selfish head-case" though. Maybe he's just very intense and artistically demanding.

OH YES.....Neal plays some great s*** on this baby....a really beautiful song...Smitty is drumming on this one, I believe..?

ROR & TBF, as said by TNC, does have its moments....BGTY, IBAWY from ROR and quite a few tunes from TBF, WYLAW, WILIYE (Japan), WITOY, ETF & SSC...

And why would anyone stab their foot listening to a Perry love song is beyond me....

Cheers.

Well, since that post, I believe that there are people who genuinely favor the new line up over the old one. I still can't believe anybody would make this decision but apparently some people have.

I'm still sticking to my guns, even though they aren't big now, about the denial thing. Am I the only one who believes 1981 Journey totally blows away current Journey???????? Who knows?? Maybe I am. To me, it's absolutely NO contest.

I still like Journey. I've seen them twice since 1998. However, I don't like them as much as I do the old band.

Remember that the Houston DVD is a legendary show--that's why they released it. I've heard live shows this year that match that DVD easily. I've heard other live shows this year that don't match the DVD. I am sure the 1981 version of Journey also had performances that are not that memorable. I'll take the current version.

Thanks for the nice reply Sherrie. I can see where some fans of the Perry era only Journey might have a hard time listening to the pre-Perry stuff, but I promise there are some unbelievable songs on those three albums, that do not fall under the 'fusion-rock' stigma they always get labeled. They are some beautiful songs that rank up there against any song from their catalog.

I'm very glad you gave Arrival and Generations a real listen, like I said some of Arrival is pretty good and I love Generations, I personally feel it was a return to their roots of the early Journey while still sounding modern and fresh.

Obviously our opinions of Perry will differ, but you're right, none of us were there thru all the turmoil and Neal certainly is no angel, I don't think anyone has any dillusions of that. I just try to enjoy all the era's of this band and all the incredible music that was made from all the lineups and appreciate everyones contributions to what we love so much.
