First off, 2 things:

1. I'm sorry, and
2. You guys are right.

And maybe, I NEEDED that Message-Board ass-kicking.

I listened to the ENTIRE CD today in my car.....halfway thru it, I was in tears - and then it dawned on me:

Perhaps my "reaction" to this CD was because deep down, the whole SP debacle still gets to me....NOBODY can argue that back in the day, STEVE PERRY WAS THE SHIT. Well, just try to imagine being so inspired by that "greatness" that it shapes your whole life...and what you want to do with it. That's why I called myself "singer-chick". I freely admit being emotionally "attached" to that incarnation of Journey:

So much so, that I developed "blinders" to anything else.

Those blinders - yes - had me secretly wishing that I would HATE this CD.....but when it comes down to it, my fury was misdirected: it wasn't that Journey put out new material;

It was the fact that STEVE PERRY - my inspiration - IS NOT DOING ANYTHING!!

I heard DSB on the way home today; it sounded so hollow to me....I got so pissed off.

I just wanted to get this off my chest. Yes I DO tend to be a "shoot first, ask questions later", stubborn, hot headed, pain in the ass BITCH - I completely own up to it.

But I also own up to this: If I'm wrong, I will admit it.

If you accept my apology, great - if not, well, I guess I have that coming.

Either way, thanks for reading.

Thank you very much for that.

I forgot the most important part:

OK - so you understand where I'm coming from, right?

Well, I had to "remove" myself from my feelings / attachments....and objectively listen to 5 very talented men:

My ending verdict is:

This is a very good CD.

Hey I understand, I'm a huge fan of the current line up and after I listened Generations the first couple of times, I was less than impressed. I remember thinking the first time thru that this album could have been done by anyone. But after giving a few more spins I started to hear the magic behind the songs that made it special, that made it Journey and I really started appreciating was each song, different though they may be, helped in making this a very solid complete and kick ass Journey album.
When its all boiled down and the days at an end, I'll give you no bullshit and I'll never pretend.

Hey Nora, I have recently admitted just about the same thing in reverse. Listening to the Escape 1981 CD and some of the boots I have recently attained has reminded me of how good Journey with Perry was. I always knew they were great, but I am so attached to this era of Journey that I also had blinders in a sense.

And I repeat, if you like it or don't is OK. Just that you listened to it all. Now, since you have supposedly had a change of heart, can you give a more complete review of good and bad?

Thanks for owning up to that, Nora. I think we all respect you and thought you would give Gens a much more thorough listen before posting your thoughts, hence the intense disappointment! It will be intreesting to see how your opinions of the songs changes after 5 or 6 listens. Can you post another song by song review then?

Hey Nora! You can agree and say that today's Journey is the shit...btut girlfriend never let them have you call yourself the "bitch". Take that out and I'd probably agree with most of what you have written. Believing in what Journey is today takes nothing awy from what and who they were with the Perryman!

Thanks for being open about the whole thing!

It is frustrating that Steve Perry doesn't release new music nowadays... it's a crime for him to not use his God-given talent. But don't let that ruin the old music for you. DSB and all of the SP Journeymusic is most definitely not hollow... it's some of the best music ever written and performed.

As far as Journey putting out new material: think about how difficult it must have been for Neal and the boys to get back out there without THE VOICE. They knew there would be a backlash. I really respect them for that and for keeping the music alive. I guess SP in his way is doing the same by producing those DVDs... and it sounds like it was hard for him to relive the memories. But we all wish he would do new stuff!!!

Anyway, I know you understand about first review not really being a review... I'd like to hear what you think in a few weeks.

Thanx, guys

Believe it or not, I was a nervous wreck writing this thread. I'm so happy that you all gave me a chance to explain why I was "off my rocker".

DSB and all of the SP Journeymusic is most definitely not hollow.

To clarify:

What I meant was - when I heard SP coming thru the speakers:

"Don't stop believin'....Hold on to that feelin'..."

I just had all of his "I'm-thinking-of-maybe-possibly-doing-a-semi-project-thing-if-the-planets-align-themselves-exactly-like-they-did-100-years-ago" comments vs. hearing NEW MUSIC IN THE HERE AND NOW duking it out in my mind, y'know??

I was going to agree with some of what you said, though you were a bit extreme. The way Augeri's voice is mixed or recorded is strange and hard to listen to at times. If they had beefed it up more, it would have been awesome. So, we have some great songs, like "Faith In the Heartland", where the vocals take the song down a notch - because of how they were mixed. That is not a good thing for a Journey album.

With the exceptions of: "Faith In the Heartland", "The Place In Your Heart", "Better Together", and "Believe" (yes, I like it)...this is a skip, skip, skip, skip CD for me. The rest are a mixed bag of average, or slightly above average, songs...with nothing really drawing me back for more.

Nora, its a breath of fresh air to find a hardcore Perry fan that has decided to be open minded enough to appreciate what Journey still has to offer. I hope you give them a chance live next tour, I feel that you won't regret it.

You've lost your way.
"Believe" is an insult to the qualitative musical level Journey fans have come to expect from this band. It is downright amateur.

Hi Nora,

I understand how you feel.
I was a pro singer and Steve Perry really helped me hone my skills ( I used to constantly practice to Winds Of March).

I ignored the current line up for years, but finally came around a few years ago. Saw them live for the first time this year since the Frontiers tour and was very impressed and relieved to see that the magic was still there.

The new songs sounded amazing, TPIYH, FITH and OOHW.
I got home and popped the CD in and was very disappointed with the mix.
The guitar sounded lush and full, but as you said the vocals were way down in the mix and sounded a bit thin. After a little EQing and a few more listens, I got used to it and ended up loving most of the CD.

I really thought that my emotional attachment to Perry was causing me to find fault in the Augeri's vocals; the performance was wonderful and the emotion was there, but they sounded thin. I was puzzled when Neal said they recorded the album in analogue which gave it that warmth and fullness. I just didn't hear it in the vocals. Well... come to find out that Augeri's vocals were dumped into Pro Tools and next Neal's analogue guitar, Pro Tooled vocals are going to sound thin, IMO.

Sorry for the long and somewhat techy post, but I thought you should know there is a logical, not emotional reason for atleast one of the faults you found in Generations. As you listen to the CD more, your ears will get used to it, so thanks for giving it another chance. Neal really sounds amazing on this CD.

OMG, speaking of Neal, he's on CNN right now, playing with Les Paul.

Anyway. Just my thougts.

It's apparent to me that Augeri has learned very little under the 8-year tutelage of Neal and Jonathan.
When you've got a song a meandering 6 minutes or so in length without a chorus you've got problems.

Well, I don't know about that....no offense.

You have to understand: this whole experience was VERY DIFFICULT for me - almost depressing......because the band - especially its lead singer - that had a MAJOR IMPACT ON MY LIFE was not the same band that I grew up with.

That's what I meant by "objectively listening" to this CD: that's what I had to do, in order to get thru it.

One more point I'd like to make - that I forgot within my original post: I think this will clarify some "sticky points":

As a musician, I always believed that people should "open their minds and expand their horizons" to new music. With that said, did I practice what I preached - listening to only one or two-plus minutes per song - and THEN trying to make a "fair judgment"?

No.

Which is why I stated that "you guys were right".

I did not "sell out"; I was being honest about agreeing to accept this CD - out of the kindness of RND's heart.

HOTS....... that is a rotten thing to say about Nora. I admit I love Perry's music and his stage presence, but damn it HOTS, I am not blinded by it. Perry hasn't come out with anything in a long time. And he does what he wants, when he wants. You are the one who is in obscurity. At least I can go with the changes.

Go back to your own fucking board, HOTS, and leave this one alone.

It was inevitable that they would have to post here, since there is nothing to post about on the Perry board, other than guessing what a confused Perry will do next, if anything.
