Based on what I've read, maybe JSS spoke too soon. Personally, I think he's a great great vocalist. I haven't been able to get a copy of SS yet, and if I ever saw it in the stores, I would buy it sight unseen. I have most of his solo stuff, and it's stellar. He's not the first musician to say something and retract it later, so that is no big deal in my opinion.

But there's no way Neal could put out 3 Journey CDs for what money he's put in. It costs A LOT MORE to put out a new Journey album... the band commands a lot more money for their work than SS does. The reason is that JSS and the others were probably working on spec... especially if Neal was doing it without pay. I mean, we know Neal wasn't getting paid... otherwise, why would he be in the hole?

Let's see, what probably cost a lot was the touring they did, which he probably paid for out of pocket. They played overseas, didn't they? And they played a few dates here in the US. That can really add up.. the plane flights, the crew pay, the freight charges, the hotels... the meals... and so forth.

Not to mention the live DVD show that was recorded but not released.

I don't understand why they wouldn't still try to release the DVD?

Yeah, but they actually said that the footage was not good enough from the Warfield show. There has been no such comment concerning the SS show. It really seems like the idea was simply shelved.

My only guess is that it would still cost more to release, with little chance of recouping expenses. Neal might be able to recoup some, but only after spending more. I guess that really does not make much sense...

Not sure who wrote this...But, they obviously underestimate Perry fans. Back in the early 90's, when KC was rumored to be replacing Perry, I got ahold of a Storm video. I taped it for a few fans. The first reply I got back was, "He's OK. But, what really turns me off is he not only tries to sound like Perry, but also tries to LOOK like Perry."

That alone made me realize that no matter who Journey replaced Perry with, he would be declared a Perry clone..because that is how Perry fans would see ANY BODY singing Journey songs in Journey.

You recite this story quite frequently. I figured you would take issue with that one excerpt. Besides that though, I think the editorial is pretty bang on.

Honestly, how many people over 60 are concert-goers? What percentage of the CBS morning show audience is over 60? I don't believe it was the last good promotional opportunity. They gave away part of the Houston 81 show to Vh1 classic...all they had to do was piggyback it with part of the Las Vegas 00 show. I thought it was a brilliant move when the show appeared for free on DirecTV (except for DirecTV limited market share). A new album with mainstream rock appeal would bring Journey attention. They desperately need a hit. They are Journey, if they get a hit, I guarantee it would get airplay, at least on adult contemporary stations.

Journey post-Perry has been plagued with a lack of creative direction; there doesn't seem to be any song-writing chemistry.

Depends where you look.
The song "Beyond the Clouds" features some rare chemistry between Neal and Steve, but as Steve divulged, the song only came about by chance. Neal and Steve showed up for rehearsal and none of the other guys did, so they decided to jam a little bit.

Most of the writing in this era is done by Jon and Neal. The fact that Steve did alot of solo or outside writing for this last album highlights the disconnect. I was hoping Steve would gel with the band, but for whatever reason, it hasn't seemed to happen yet.

I also think Neal is apathetic about the whole thing. How else to account for most of his tunes going towards his side projects? "Believe in Me" just screamed classic Journey and what does he do? Tosses it first to Hagar and then finally to Soto for use on a solo record.
Neal wants out, I am pretty sure of that.

I think this was only because there were no plans for a Journey album at the time, but it should have been saved for sure.

Maybe if Soul Sirkus had taken off, I doubt he plans to get out at this point, maybe ready for a break though.

If Neal wants a break from Journey, he should do something with Sammy. Neal and Sammy have just as much chemistry together as Neal and Perry.

Why the confusion, NIG?

Meaning that Sammy and Neal are friends, Neal and Perry didn't care for each other outside their working relationship. Meant no reference to Journey's current lineup or SS.

Oh, I thought you were implying Neal and JSS don't get along.

Not at all, I thought they were probably closer than Neal and Sammy ever were.
