What Journey song unfairly gets a bad rap?

I always listen to Baby I'm Leaving You as just a "fun" little ditty! More of an outtake where the guys were playing around. I enjoy it.

And if Eric hadn't beat me to it, I was going to say Believe because you (TNC) just love to beat the shit outta that song!

I also think Back Talk gets more than it's worth...if nothing else, it has a cool drum beat to it and Smitty got credit on the song. As I have said before, the song resonates with me because I have one kid who was very close to going down the path the song describes. Fortunately he seems to be growing out of it...I hope.

I was one of the people that wrote it off as "fusion rock crap" without listening to it, and I have changed my evil ways (no pun intended)! I agree with Cubby, and the first three albums would meet the criteria of having a bad rap for no reason at all.

Anything post Perry lacks the luxury of radio automaticallly playing it. Thus the reason I rarely give any radio the time of day! Screw 'em! My CD player more than satisfies my musical tastes. No commercials, to boot!

LOL! Cubby, gotta tell ya what happened to me the other day. One of my co-workers came into my cube and saw the various and sundry Journey related items I have scattered about (most noticably my screen saver of a zillion pix from differing eras) and commented "Oh you like Journey?" (she's new to the company, so wasn't yet clued in) When I said yes, she replied "I just picked up 'Next' and am loving it!" I was so shocked I didn't know what to say. NO ONE knows those albums...

As for my two cents on the subject...

1. Open Arms -- yeah it's over played, yeah if I never heard it in concert agian I'd be perfectly fine with it, but in the end there is something to all that bombast that works. And when it was new, it was wonderful...

2. Castles Burning -- I *still* skip it most of the time when I play TBF, but mainly because it's too damn long and repetitive! It's definitely a song that is best played live, and fortunately I had that opportunity back in '98/'99 -- one of those early Augeri tours... Kicked ass.

The entire Arrival album, is my answer. Great ballads, a couple great rockers. No radio airplay, no respect. This is a damned solid album. Nothin' Comes Close is one of the best Journey songs ever, IMO. And this was the first time we all got to hear really Jon and Neal at the forefront. Well...first time with Neal in 20+ years anyway. Arrival kicks ass.

Arrival is a solid record. Unfortunately, much like Generations, Augeri's writing offerings hamper the album (Live and Breathe is a shit tune).

Still a great record. I prefer Generations though.

I'm well aware. Coincidentally, it's also the only Arrival track he took an active creative role in (hence, his name leading the writing credits). Jon and Neal largely did the brunt of everything else. Though Steve did contribute a few neat ideas here and there.

Unfortunately, since Augeri claimed it to be his favorite, all of the BackTalk brown shirts fell instantaneously in line and declared it to be their favorite, as well. I guess it's their attempt to curry favor with Lydia or whichever character from the revolving door of computer-savvy Augeri family members happens to be lurking at the time.
Some members even include the song title as part of their sn.

I'm glad you enjoy the tune, but for my money its a terrible song.

The closing "yeah, yeah, yeah" part of the song is off-key.
Just all around repetitious, monotonous, and mind-numbingly grating.

It's rapidly becoming Augeri's calling card.
First with "Live & Breathe" and now with the similarly insipid "Believe".
By the by, the Augeri-penned "Butterfly" also goes nowhere.

Oddly, I feel "Butterfly" the best out of the three.
It's almost good. It's got a similar female-reflective vibe to it like other Augeri compositions such as "Jamie", "Somewhere She Waits For Love", or "Restless One".
Ultimately, Butterfly is almost decent , but like Believe, it succumbs to tedious, drawn-out repetition in the end.
One refrain of "in a cage, tried to escape..." too many imo.

Sorry I have to disagree with you on "Eyes of A Woman". I HATE "Eyes of a Woman". If anything this song is OVER-RATED vs. UNDER_RATED. How did this drivel ever make TIME 3 and Essential Journey? And given what was left off those two records makes it even more incomprehensible how "Eyes" ever got on those compilations. Its not like it was a hit or anything.
