Concert Idea

Postby Rockindeano » Tue Feb 28, 2006 7:46 am

A buddy of mine and I were listening to some boots of live When You Love a Woman, and I had an idea, that my friend thought was pretty good. I said the only way to put it to a real test was to subject it the wolverines of one MelodicRock.com.

I think the string segment gives the song a different feel to that of other ballads.

So, my idea was that Journey Mgt.(Yeah right), could contact High Schools for selected shows, and have about 15-20 students come on stage and do the string attachments to the song. It could be students from just one big high school, or selected students from a number of community schools. The kids could have a heads up of about 2 months to get it right, and then on show night, get on the bus and get to the gig.

Just think of the all aroung good Public Relations that could be gained by not only the band, but the students and the schools.

Not only will the students who are playing get to see what the band is all about, but their friends would come to watch, their parents, their friends parents, and so on. Talk about a major multiplying effect of gaining NEW fans to the band.

Special thanks to my buddy for helping me brainstorm this.

See Irving, you need to think outside the box once in awhile.

I think this would be a great idea - Jonathan seems to be very involved in music education and I think it would be a great inspiration to kids to get involved in something like that!

Down-side is, it'd be tough to get Journey to agree to something like that with no rehearsal time with the kids, etc, unless it could be prerecorded on Jonathan's PowerBook or something. Maybe would be good for a one-off show where the kids could run through the song with the band...also, where would you put all the little stools and music stands? Ideally, they could be suspended from wires over the stage like little elves, but you always have the problem of fat kids getting wedgies.

Jeremey,

It wouldn't be that hard..Pre record it, send it to music teachers in advance. Hell, they could do it live at the sound check. It wouldnt really have to be EVERY show. But n the large cities, LA, CHI, SEA, DEN, etc, it would great to have about 40 kids...and there is plenty of room.

you could set up 3 rows of 13 and cover with black screen until song time, and have it lifted off by connected cable..easy.

Kids are pretty sharp in HS music, and that piece isnt that difficult.

One of the reasons I like TBF so much is because of that beautiful orchestra behind When You Love A Woman.Gives me chills.
I think other songs could be done like that as well. For example,I would love to hear With Your Love from Arrival with a big orchestra.I adore this song. One of the greatest ballads of all times.

No, they don't.

I stand by what I said.

If you notice, this idea stems from a thought process of them actually touring. I still say they don't play this year live. I hope I am wrong, and if so, feel free to bash the shit out of me...IF I am wrong, I won't be upset.

Dean,

This is a good idea. It reminds me of when I saw the Moody Blues back in the early 90's. That was the first tour they did where they would use a local symphony orchestra during the show. And they did this in every city they played.

Well, truthfully, I did steal the idea, but reworked the improvisation..I actually got the idea seeing Shania do this with a drum cor from high schools in Canada. I thought this would be a sure fire way to draw fans.

I know you are a Moody Blues fan Clasicrockldy, so close your ears/eyes.

I wouldn't steal an idea from those Euro pussies if I needed to. I respect Twain a Helluva lot more than the MB's....

Ok, I'm done. :P

Yep. One of the dumbest things Sony ever did was not promote "With your Love". I don't really like Augeri's voice but he did an almost unbelievable job on this song.

I asked this question after Arrival was realsed and didn't really get an answer from anybody on it.

WHY DID SONY NOT PROMOTE "WITH YOUR LOVE"???????? I never have understood why they didn't.

Because they couldn't get rid of a Journey without Steve Perry quick enough.

Kalodner hated Augeri and Sony wouldn't promote them even though they still draw 8-10k per concert with no promotion.

Sony didn't do a damned thing for Journey. That album, as slow as it was, could've and should've brought them back like Aerosmith and Bon Jovi in recent years. I believe there was some political bullshit happening, to keep that album dowm.

O well, I am so glad you all hijacked my thread. I have NEVER done that to anybody elses'.

New Journey was an unproven entity. With that being considered Sony did do some things. Gave them a Direct TV special, an appearance on the CBS morning show and a nationwide broadcast on varying radio stations across the country where they played live. I heard them do "Whose Crying Now". Sounded good. Way better than their botched apperance on the morning show.

To the contrary, it was with Kalodner's blessing that the band ultimately picked Augeri. Augeri also makes sure to thank him in Arrival's liner notes.

Here's Jon Cain adulating Kalodner & discussing how his powerful influence was in part responsible for bringing about the current limeup.

"I have to say though that John, mostly for us, has been a tremendous ally in the face of putting this band back together and has been a terrific friend of this new version of Journey. It’s safe to say that Arrival would have never happened without him. He stood up for us. He got us going with “Remember Me” on the Armageddon soundtrack. That was his doing. Of course, I was working hard and with Neal to write some new music and John called after our hard work and it all came to fruition.

When Steve Augeri stepped in, we were recording as a band again, which was beyond my wildest dreams, for it to happen so quickly. Thanks to John for sticking his neck out for us and getting us that slot on Armageddon. We needed a base hit, basically and John got us on base. That was like Yo! That was a big thing for me just to get that. It's almost like we passed the audition as a new band.

We spent most of the summer of ’98 talking about to Journey or not to Journey without Steve Perry. He was very concerned as to how to play this. It wasn’t just a rash, quick decision that we all made. Certainly he was a big part of my feelings and my decision to go forward. I didn’t want to go into this without his blessing. We didn’t make this decision overnight. We spent a whole summer talking about every other week. Finally, he said “Yeah. Let’s try. Let’s go for it,” which was a big step for Neal and I and our dream, to bring Journey back. Neal and I just didn’t want to go quietly. What was that Don Henley song? “I will not go quietly. I will not lay down?” That’s how we felt. That was kind of like my war cry. Thanks to John, he pulled a rabbit out of a hat for us. We ended up on Armageddon, then doing the tour. He brought the Sony people out and I think single-handedly is responsible for what we’re doing today. Certainly we did a lot of the work but without John standing up in his corporate headquarters for us and sticking his neck out saying, I need this. I don’t think it would’ve happened"

Its worth noting that Kalodner's once warm sentiment towards Augeri did seem to cool. He's on record saying that Augeri is "no steve Perry" and that he would not sign Journey to his Sanctuary record label.
Why the about face on Steve Augeri?

There could possibly be some validity to the idea that Kalodner is dissapointed w/ the success of the new lineup (or lack of it). Kalodner could also have refused to sign Journey largely so as to not in any way jeopardize his more lucrative current working relationship with the legendary, Steve Perry (on the dvds).
Steve, is purported to be very emotionaly voilatile. Everyone knows this. If word travels to him that Kalodner is helping the enemy, aiding the new aberrational Journey band on a new Journey album, Perry is apt to go back into the cave, roll the boulder in the front and this time truly never come out again.
Would Kalodner want to in any way risk harming that working relationship? Would anybody in the music biz? The answer is easy, of course not.

Sanctuary records would later go on to distribute "Generations" in the U.S.
