Label me a sucker, but I thought the man was being sincere in the scene and still do.

You know what the wierd part is? Despite the fact that his eyes were bone dry, I think he was sincere too. I mean why would you behave like that on camera on purpose :?:

Yeah, I agree that he seemed sincere, unlike the ROR MTV/CBS documentry when Jonathan and Neal are talking about how this is the best line-up Journey has had so far.

Kinda got the feeling they had guns pointed to their heads.

The only one who came off phoney during the whole BTM is Perry.
He comes across so factitiously reflective and pensive.
All so rehearsed and laboriously pre-thought out; right down to the "never felt like part of the band" closing comment.
As everyone from Herbie to Ross have mentioned, that line reaches new heights in unprecedented absurdity.
So why did Perry say something so incontrovertibly false, you ask?

I missed something here...did your wife give Jonathan Cain an audition tape, of sorts, to be in Journey?

If so, how in the hell did you not get the gig.

No, this did not happen....This was an old tape me and a friend had made paying homage to "Separate Ways," in a completely different style than the original.

Actually, I heard the original Judy Torres version before those techno boys got a hold of it, and it was pretty good. Not a club track at all. That bitch can sing.

I agree, though, for Jon to allow those techno versions to be released is totally lame. $$$

The best ever cover of Faithfully IMO, is Lorrie Morgan. She is a country singer, and I do have the song of her doing it. Sounds really good. If you want it and have aol IM, hit me at derbydeano..I am at aol.

I thought he came across as intelligent, introspective and gracious, whereas Jon came off looking bitter and resentful. As did Neal to a degree, just with a more "hey I'm so cool, man" face on it.

Just because the "never felt like part of the band" was put in at the end, it doesn't mean he meant it to apply to his entire tenure with Journey. I think he was talking about the time when CBS and Herbie first put him into the band and they all resented him.

I have to agree that the BTM has to be Jon's lowest point.

Gracious? How so? At the WOF ceromony, he was definetely gracious. He exuded class that day. Thanking Herbie Herbert, the rod crew, the fans and complimenting the band members. A thing of beauty.
During BTM, it was all about him, except the part about the "kinship of Neal's strings and his voice." Maybe not Perry's fault. He didn't produce it, after all.

As did Neal to a degree, just with a more "hey I'm so cool, man" face on it.

Neal was very gracious to Perry. The remark about the reason they were on the radio was due to the voice, was but one example. I really don't think Neal prescreens what he is about to say. He just says it like it is. Neal just exudes cool; he can't help it.

Just because the "never felt like part of the band" was put in at the end, it doesn't mean he meant it to apply to his entire tenure with Journey. I think he was talking about the time when CBS and Herbie first put him into the band and they all resented him.

I tend to agree. At least I hope this was the case. However, I have some doubts. Why would HH, Smith, Valory, Neal and Cain all be gasped at that comment? Surely one of them must have asked if he meant the entire duration of the band, or Perry's entry time period.

I have to agree that the BTM has to be Jon's lowest point.

I may be the only one on here who disagrees with everyone here. I think it is flatout manly he broke down like that. I applaud that. Guy has a huge heart, and his feelings came out. So what? He saw a kid, a human being stripped of life. He has kids, and he has a heart, he knows the emotional attachment. If anything, my respect for Jon grew by leaps and bounds. Come on, who here didn't get a little teary eyed when they showed Kenny's face and played Only the Young.? I sure did. THAT, was what life is all about. Compassion for our fellow man.

Last note, I think we got a foggy story all around. After all, they were all bound as to what they could or couldn't say. It was no different than the government and classified documents. It wasn't really truthful.

The entire thing reeks. How pathetic Perry and Schon can't talk? How pathetic this great band can't grow the hell up and put some mixed emotions behind them. BOTH sides.

Disgusting.

I wonder what will happen if God forbid one of the guys were to pass away. Would the other side come pay respects? When it's too late? Come on already.

Nah, now you cant question Jon's sincerity in regards to the kid, that's just wrong.

And besides, theoretically, if you're gonna fake crying, you're gonna fake-voice crack and look down and wipe a tear that isnt there.

You're not gonna blubber like that.

Big suprise there.
There could've been a fuck up in the VH1 control room and someone accidentally rolled footage of Steve Perry voraciously chomping into a fetus head and you'd still find some way to put a rosy spin on it.

ohsherrie wrote:whereas Jon came off looking bitter and resentful.

Didn't see that.

ohsherrie wrote:As did Neal to a degree, just with a more "hey I'm so cool, man" face on it.

I thought Neal came off like a very pragmatic, sensible guy.
If you don't want to work, you should probably go clean out your cubicle.
Right on.

Herbie and others have said Perry had editorial control of the show.
If that's the case, don't you think he would've clarified that?
There was no deceptive editing going on.
Re-play the clip.
He is reflecting about his time in the band in totality.
Saying, "I never truly felt like part of the band. I know that's hard to see and even hard to say.."

ohsherrie wrote: I think he was talking about the time when CBS and Herbie first put him into the band and they all resented him.

What you think and what is are two entiriely separate things. Even though Perry admits to firing Smitty and Ross on the show, HOTS staunchly maintains that somehow, someway Perry is being misunderstood.

That was bound to happen anyway.
Journey was coming back (Chalfant/Rolie incarnation) before Perry stuck his nose into it.

I agree with Deano... I also got teary-eyed when I saw that. To this day, if I watch that interview with him, it stirs something in me and I get shaken up. I believe it was the real deal.
