How in the WORLD am I relating back to him on this point when:

A. Steve just SAID it not that long ago - I thought he made a good point, and
B. IN MY OPINION, Sting went back to the "Grandma Music" that I referred to...and that you avoided addressing in your reply:

Do they think they have to "give up" what they're known for, and just slip into "Grandma's Music" because they've reached a "certain age"??

I'm a huge Sting fan. Sting was a jazz bassist before he joined Stewart Copeland in The Police. He's always flirted with jazz and world music, you can hear it through a bit of The Police, but once Sting released Dream of The Blue Turtles, he went completely jazz. He pretty much introduced Branford Marsailis to the world on that CD and Branford also joined Sting on the Nothing Like The Sun CD...In fact, Sting was criticized for exploiting and appropriating black music and black players early on in his solo career.

In 2002 or so, Sting began touring with Chris Botti, who was a moderately successful jazz trumpeter in his own right. Chris catapulted to fame from the exposure he got touring and recording with Sting, and if you listen to Chris' solo CDs, he covers the gamut from smooth jazz to classical jazz, to adult contemporary rock....He's always had guest singers on his CD, and it seems natural that Sting would appear on his CD and do some appearances to support it.

As for "My Funny Valentine," that' not a moldy oldie, it's a classic, covered by everyone from Johnny Mathis to Elvis Costello. It's one of my favorite songs to sing, and Sting & Chris' version is pretty damned good.

VERY nice post, Jeremey! I love both The Police AND Sting's music. Very diversified, but at the same time...close in style sometimes!
