Can JSS pull off Journey?

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Mon Mar 27, 2006 11:52 am

I say "no".
Oh sure, he could do a decent rendition of "Send Her My Love", and a few of the easier tunes, but I don't think he has the range to do any of the early Perry stuff (the way Deen does).

What does everyone else think?

JSS claims that when he was younger he could pull off "Sweet and Simple" with ease, but those days are sadly behind him.

Him and Neal seemed to hit it off really well creatively.
They wrote how many songs together (for Soul Sirkus) in a matter of weeks?
This is the type of singer/guitarist chemistry that is almost nowhere to be found in Augeri Journey.

Don't let Andrew hear this.

JSS should be the lead singer for this band right now. Or Kevin Chalfant. Either one would be better than current.

I can't say that decisively.
JSS, alot like Augeri, is more rock and blues inclined.
That may appeal to Neal's musical sensibilities, but I'm not sure if that's right for Journey.
They need a crooner.
Kevin would've been perfect a few years back.
Maybe he still sounds great. I really have no idea.

Yeah, but on which songs, Andrew?
I am willing to wager it was all greatest hits stuff and none of the more challenging tunes.
I know he has occassionally sung "Send Her My Love" and "Lovin; Touchin; Squeezin", and while they are certainly challenging for me and you, they are some of the easier songs out of all of Journey's collection.

I'd like to see JSS continue to pull of Soul SirkUs...follow up World Play soon with another album and keep plugging at it.

i found World Play to be one of those time bombs that partially due to SSoto's Vox has grown on me in a big way. this can continue, I hope, even if NS does have to abandon the project. And seeing as it did not keep Generations from being released I don't see why neal's got to give it up unless he has to keep personally funding it.

JSS' vocals were not what I expected when first listening to World Play. In fact, I listened to his Queen stuff and was disappointed after all the hype. I think he is a solid vocalist but he was not what I had envisioned.

When I first heard about his chemistry with Neal and his appreciation for Journey music (and before I actually heard him sing) I thought he would be great for the band. I thought He and Neal could create a spark, a desire, a passion for the music. But now that I have heard him, I think he is better suited for something other than Journey. HOWEVER, if Journey wanted to use a singer that was VERY different from the past, and if they truly wanted to push forward, then he could still be a good fit. I just wouldn't expect the same things from the band...

I heard JSS on the Soul Sirkus tour, and I would have to agree that Jeff just doesn't have a Journey-style voice. He pulled off SHML and LTS with just him and the keyboard, and it was good, but it was because it was being sung JSS-style, and not as Journey would have played it. Jeff's got much more of a Hagar vibe in my opinion. I know he mentions Perry, Cooke, and TTD as some of his greatest influences, but I hear a more Hagar/80's metal vibe in his voice...Maybe the vocal nodes back in the late 90's did a permanent change from the smoother R&B vibe...When Journey auditioned Augeri, they found some great singers (ie Geoff Tate) that could sing original material and rock, but didn't necessarily have the Perry sound everyone in the band agreed was necessary...

I agree with you J. Perry sound? Hmm, I thought it was a "Journey" sound we needed?

Maybe they need to step away from that "Perry sound" and go a new direction, yet at 55 yrs old, that's kind of tough to do.

I want to know this. I want to know if they have EVER called Perry in the last 3 years, and asked him.

Fuck, you have to make this call. I know it's a pride thing for both sides, but 2 wrongs aren't making a right.

Don't think they cared to, Rock. Schon/Cain have stated for the record numerous times that they're happy where their Journey careers are at right now. There is no grassy knoll behind which their hidden desires to manuever SP back into the fold hides.

So Perry will be 57 or 58, right? Sure, why not give it more time. They are all young men. And Perry's voice just keeps getting better!

O come the fuck on, NIG.

I can definetely read this coded sentence.

I supported Augeri when he deserved the support.

Ok, so I am voted off the island. I get it. I'll start my own faction of followers, and we can have three way battles...Loons, Goons, and My team..That would liven up the Board, eh?

Andrew wouldn't know what to do then. Dude's head would spin like a top.

Know what this feels like?

I feel like Espee and you and 13 are Jon and Neal. I am stuck on the outside.

This "breakup" might be as big as the real one! At least here on MR.

True. But if they were willing to look past the 'trademark' distinctive vocal signature of Journey songs then they should have gone with it from the get go. Now that Neal and Jon have had Steve for 8 years, they cannot expect to be successful with someone with a totally different vocal style.

Rockn'deano wrote:Maybe they need to step away from that "Perry sound" and go a new direction, yet at 55 yrs old, that's kind of tough to do.

It's just too late for that.

I have heard that there has been talk and that it was unsuccessful.

Besides, look at all the press Perry gave saying specifically that he will not perform with Journey again.

Rockn'deano wrote:Fuck, you have to make this call. I know it's a pride thing for both sides, but 2 wrongs aren't making a right.

It is very much about pride on all sides. But why would Neal and Jon even try to get Perry back if he is on record repeatedly stating that it is over and he will not perform with Journey again? Not just once, or even twice. Perry has stated it many, many times over the years.

I really thought this would be the year...if there was gonna be a change it would happen this year. Journey even set us up for it a little by talking about taking the year off. Steve has been talking about wanting to spend time with his son before he leaves the house. Neal has ben wanting to work on other projects. Jon was not "into" writing and recording until late in the Generations sessions. Steve wants to do a solo CD because Journey is not recording new music. It was all there..........and then the guys sign up with Def Leppard to tour. And this tour is gonna start in June so it will likely go into late November/early December. Certainly a surprise in my book.

Now we will have to wait and see how Steve handles this tour. Now it looks like 2007 will be the year for "it" to happen. But maybe they will surprise us again.

Hell, maybe we will get another CD. (Yeah, I doubt that one too.)

Perry repeating his claim over and over is nothing more than him trying to solidify himself as retired. You just know he wants back in.

I'll say it again. Make the call. YES. Change singers. Do it.

I just don't see it happening. I don't see the need.

The selling point would be a reunion tour. Deen's been great, why kick him to the curb? Smith didnt do anything wrong on his way out the door, but sorry, with the way Perry has both talked and acted over the last decade with regards to Journey an his exit...why on earth does he deserve the spot...without even getting into the fact that he can't sing the songs anymore.

"The voice" is gone. I'm as sad about it as anyone else. But Augeri's done an admirable job filling some very big shoes. He's earned his place in the band.

Steve definately earned his place in the band and had done a commendable job. The question at hand is whether or not Steve can continue and what to do if he cannot. If Steve cannot continue than Journey should either retire, or do the Perry reunion/farewell tour and then retire.

THIS is what I am trying to say.

He can't do the job anymore. Get it people? Guy has lost his voice. Get over it. Brink back Perry, kiss and make up, cash in, say goodbye, and ride off into the great world of retirement.
