MICHAEL ANTHONY Interview

Postby Fernando Ramirez » Sat Mar 18, 2006 2:35 pm

What a great interview... I would love to read it in its entirety. We haven't had this much VH information in a LOOOOONG time.

My opinion of Eddie is changing. The person I once thought was superhuman and humble is not either one of those. I can't believe he was bitching about something as inane as the Tequila and the Hot Sauce.

And regarding the problems with Dave's ego... I mean, it seems to me that Eddie's ego is right up there with the Diamond one!

It was heartbreaking to read that Mike, the everyman friendly guy, was almost excluded from the tour. What the frick for? His background vox and solid bass are the FOUNDATION of that band. It really sounds like he just wants to get out and jam, and meanwhile the politics of the VH brothers prevent anything from getting done. What about the reason they started doing music? Does that not matter anymore?

Don't get me started on how you can hardly hear Michael on some of the VH albums.

Great information, Andrew! This is the stuff I love to read about, and this is the reason MR is my favorite site.

Why do I get the feeling that Michael Anthony will never play with VH again? That seemed like a tell-all interview. He was so candid that it seemed like he doesn't care what Eddie thinks. He should write a book someday.

Eddie seems so petty. Wonder what made him that way? I wish he would lighten up and have some fun and make music with Al, Mike and Sammy again. Seems like any reunion with Roth is out of the question, after reading what MA said about the three failed attempts to work with him. I wonder if Al is afraid to play with anyone else? Maybe Eddie would beat him up if he did? :P

Can Eddie go after Sammy and MA legally for playing VH tunes with The Other Half?

It's a family thing, NIG. I'm sure there is an unspoken agreement that they not play with others... that they stick together. I get the impression that Alex would get out and play some more... he's a talented drumer. But he doesn't cause of Eddie, and doing so would go against the family.

Eddie is notorious for always saying "I wash dishes only for Van Halen." But that makes him a hypocrite since he himself has washed dishes for Nicolette Sheridan, Michael Jackson, Steve Lukather, Dweezil Zappa, and Brian May. But Al has never played with anyone else, as far as I know.

My God, I just realized... after reading my own quote...

Eddie Van Halen has become Michael Corleone!

When you get to be a superstar the size of Eddie, you can (think) do anything you want. I think Eddie was jealous of them and there side products. And Sammy really bad. Sammy is SUPER talented, and ever one knows it. Sammy still going after VH, David? Sammy could care less, he does what he likes and keeps an ear to the fans too. Ithink we have seen the end of Eddie-ERIC

It really saddens me to say, but I agree with Abitaman, I too think we've seen the last of EVH, the musician. He has way too many issues and must be practically impossible to work with too.

I'd love to have seen another jaunt with Diamond Dave, but ater reading Mike's interview it sounds more of an impossibility now than ever before.

RIP Van Halen. :(

I don't think so. He seems to be working on music all the time in his home studio. Even if it's just Ed and Al, I think we will hear new music from Ed someday. I do think the group VH is done, sadly.

He's not a human being it he expects everyone to rest on their laurels while he figures out what HE wants to do. That's ridiculous.

It's hard to believe that Eddie is capable of being jealous of anyone... it should be the other way around! But I suppose, alas.. he's only human.

Mike is a very humble person if what was said in the interview is correct.

No one, except the parties involved, know exactly what went on and why. Only Eddie knows what happened to Eddie. Only Sammy knows what happened to Sammy... etc, etc. I'm not that interested in the drama.

I JUST WANT TO SEE AND HEAR VAN HALEN PERFORM NEW MATERIAL AGAIN!

I agree, I don't believe MA would be this outspoken if he thought there was a chance he'd ever work with VH again, he probably thinks VH will never do anything again, period.

Sammy and MA want to play music, make money and have fun. Why should they put their lives on hold for Eddie and Alex?

I like the way MA and Sammy get along so well. They "get it". I don't think Eddie ever will... :?

I'm a bit surprised we aren't hearing any talk of Planet Us again. Maybe the apparent lack of big label interest the first time around has led to Sammy's disinterest in the project.

Personally, I'd probably rather see more SS myself...
Who'd have ever imagined it, EVH a bigger head case than SP??

I always got the feeling that MA was the peacemaker in that family, and I'm sure that you can only push buttons so far and that is why he is speaking out now. That bit about making him take less money to go on tour. WTF...MA IS part of Van Halen. I agree...he and Sammy DO get it and I think they kick ass together. They know how to be part of a team, not me me me like Eddie has so obviously become obessed with. I hope he works out whatever his issues are, but I'm glad MA and Sammy aren't sitting on their laurels till Eddie gets his shit together. They have too much to offer for that.

Has anybody here read the "lost" interview with Eddie Van Halen by Steven Rosen in the latest GUITAR ONE magazine? Eddie tears a new one into Mike on that interview. The interview was done after DIVER DOWN was completed, and Eddie alludes that Mike has absolutely nothing to offer music wise. That he never contributed any songwriting. That he could never stand Mike's sound. And also that he could never hear him onstage either.

I remember back when DLR's book "Crazy Fron The Heat" I think it was called, he had mentioned that when he & Eddie first talked about getting back together for a recording session, he said that Eddie was looking for a replacement for Micheal. Eddie must of really wanted him out a long time ago. Sorry, but for me, I gotta have MA's backing vocals, which is probably one of the reasons I was disgusted with "VH 3". I couldn't hear those soaring backround vocals. When I did watch a MTV special called "The 10 Spot", VH was featured live in Australia. When they did the new songs, I did like them alot more, only because I could hear MA.

I also recall reading in... I think it was a Billy Sheehan interview back in the late 80s or something, that they were considering him as Michael's replacement. I don't understand why they (meaning Eddie) didn't act on that one... Billy is arguably one of the best bassists anywhere. His playing would not have been noodly, he would have played with the songs, but he could have given Eddie some much needed competition!
