Herbie re-interviewed!

Okay, my two cents on this...

I've personally heard Herbie wax fondly nostalgic on the peak Journey years, and I've read this interview & the one he did in 2001. And none of the comments are inconsistent with each other. I liken it to high school. I think most people can look back at high school and see two things -- (1) stupid, childish, petty sniping, backbiting and general dischord and (2) a time of discovery and growth with lasting memories and friendships. A lot of really great stuff happened to and for those guys between 1978-1986. And along with the really great stuff came a lot of shit. Depending on who you ask, what you ask, and when you ask it, you're either going to get a sunshine and roses tale of fond memories or a heaping pile of dung. That's just how life is sometimes.

Throw into the mix that there are no small egos involved here, and the inevitable butting of heads. Herbie wanted one thing, Perry wanted something else, Neal wanted his thing, and so on... there's no way everyone is walking away happy 'cause no one got exactly what he wanted. (Though, admittedly Perry probably came closest.)

To borrow a line ... the more we know, the less we understand.

Sometimes, ignorance truly is bliss. ;)

I'll give you that in part, but IMO when you compare ROR to the rest of the Journey catalog it just doesn't hold up as well. I enjoyed it tremendously 20 years ago when I got it, but it sounds tired and out of date now -- something I don't feel about every Journey album prior to ROR.

There are some good songs -- BGTY has been a personal favorite from the moment I heard it -- but most of them blur together into one song.

LMFAO

And incidentally, I have no clue how WCTNGOF wasn't the biggest damned hit they ever had. Every bit as sappy as Open Arms, and the last time Perry ever really REALLY soared vocally on record. Noone knew that'd be the way at the time, but Christ the vocals on that song. And Neal's great on it too.

The rest of the album...ugh. But that and IBAWY are great songs.

Funny thing is that I didn`t listen to ROR when it came out.It happened much later and perhaps this is why it doesn`t sound out of date for me.It`s true, tho…Compared to the rest of Journey`s albums,it has the “poppy” sound that the majority of the Journey fans blame.

Dean,I agree with the fact that Europeans have crappy tastes in music.Thank God I am not in that category. If all the Euros would be listening to what I listen, the EU flag should be replaced by the Star- Spangled Banner. And Madonna would be banned.

Spare me. I NEVER said the USA was all that either. The USA can bite my white ass.

I just said Europe blows. Everything from its smelly people who don't believe in deodorant, to that poor example of a "sport" that is soccer(who in the Hell invented that game?), to all your "history, which I for one, am not all impressed by. If it weren't for the US, you would all be speaking Japanese and German.

Anyway, I also think you have crappy taste in music. When Judas preist and Queen are revered, I have got a serious problem, and no, not because they are major choad smokers.

And No, Madonna should never be banned. The woman, who may be wacked out of her skull, thinks for herself, and isn't afraid to tell W to go fuck himself. I respect the Hell out of her.

Keeping this on Herbie, who I absolutely LOVE by the way, does anyone know how much dude weighs? I can't find a picture anywhere.

He could always come out of retirement and go to the WWE. I can see Herbie doing a "frog splash" off the top ropes.

LOL!
I said I`m listening to American music.Classic rock. And some Buckcherry from time to time. And Nickelback. And I love Satriani and Eddie.

I don`t care what Madonna says or does. She is not a singer. She does`t have valuable music, she only has an image.Well, good for her.

LOL! I brush my teeth, I wear perfume and I hate soccer.I guess it`s time for me to change continents.I`m moving to Japan!

Sorry.

Now back to HH.

That's a great way of putting it.
Sadly, I feel the mid-section of Generations (OOHW, ISD, BT) suffers from a similar problem.
It's one relentless homogenized hard-rock chunk.
Where's a much-needed influx of melody?
OOHW is a great tune when listened to on it's own respective merits, sadly, it gets lost in the mix of barely-distinguishable heavy rockers.

I can see the entire Band in the WWE..

You got Herbie and Neal tag teaming up against Perry, Baird and Frigga, while RJ does commentary.

Herbie gets Perry on his ass in the corner, and starts to back his wide load fat caboose into Perry's nose....Meanwhile Neal picks up a fake guitar, and slams Frigga in the head, and Baird tries in vain to drum on Neals dome. Meanwhile, Rolie drops out of the rafters, and taunts Cain with a Keytar, saying how gay it is. He slams Frigga in the back of the head with it. Then, "Can Do" starts playing, and "Grandpa George" Tickner comes running out in his Colonel Sanders outfit, and starts beating the shit out of everyone. Everyone is now in a free for all...Neal is capping Perry's sorry ass, and Herbie is trying to smother Tickner, while Frigga is running for first aid. Rolie is a fire breathing dragon, and Baird is throwing milkshakes with RJ. Then, Pat Morrow, fully decked out in a Mr Clean outfit, rolls out in a Harley and declares war on Wolfman Black, who is coming out at the same time from the opposite side. Now it's a full blown war. All of a sudden, Perry says, "Hey!"...everyone stops and looks...

"I'm toast. I really am toast." Frigga makes the call across the ring to Herbie on his cellphone, and asks him to "let us go on." Herbie says sure you "bunch of losers." Neal says, "save some real estate for me" and Rolie says, "the Hell with this." Sherrie Swafford gets all riled up, but before she can go help out her man, Schons 4 wives are waiting in ambush to annihiate Sherrie. Meanwhile, Randy's pants are so fricking tight, he splits em climbing up the stairs to the ramp as he makes his way to the Jumbo Hot dog stand for a six pack of...Jumbo dogs.. Meanwhile Steve Smith appears, and starts going "machine gun" on everybody within arm distance. Perry calls Loggins and soon Kenny arrives in his Miata, and Stevie and Kenny drive off. Soon, the lights go off, and after 5 mins, everyone is gone....dust is swirling....

to be continued.

I just get tired of all the bashing. If you don't think America is the greatest country on Earth, then there are plenty of people who would trade places with you in a heartbeat. Criticizing the govt. is fine, but saying America can bite your white ass? WTF is that? :?

Jesus, NIG. WTF? That's what I meant when I said America. Hey, by all means, if you like the path "America" is headed on, go out and campaign for those jokers. I have had enough.

That's about as ignorant as it gets and typical of an uneducated American.

Britain/Australia/NZ and our allies were fighting and dying in that war YEARS before the yanks finally got involved.

Dude, relax. I know you down there are tough as nails. I was talking about American/European relations, not Australian states.

Can we agree to disagree? I haven't seen one Euro that would scare me....ever.

Dude, they drink tea and play soccer. it doesn't get any gayer and softer than that, does it?

Herbie definetely is NOT from Europe. Herbie can eat nails and spit out a barbed wire fence. He can also make a bus too heavy for highway travel as well.

God, I have just been waiting for someone to ask me this.. !!!

Okay, I am trying to remain calm here. Soccer sucks, Ray. I will give you some solid reasons as to why it isn't even a sport.

1) First off, it's the "world's number one sport" because the poor states of the world can't afford a baseball and a bat, or a football( a real one with laces), or ice for a rink, or basketball hoops and asphalt. All you need is a coconut and two trees for goal posts to play this shit game.

2) Corruption- The referees and the players are all in on the rigging of games. Stay with me here. I will meld this into reason number 3.

3) Scoreboard. What the hell is with that? Soccer, the "world's best game" doesn't use a fixed scoreboard with a CLOCK! Why is this important. Let me tell you. The "referee" aka, the betting scumdick, keeps the "injury" time in his head, and when the stopwatch goes off(the scoreboard clock), he just guesstimates how much time should be added on to accomadate "injury time." First off, these clowns don't get hurt. How the fuck does one get hurt by sliding on grass? Did poor south American tiger beater get a grass burn? poor baby...nuh uh. So, said ref "adds time on to the end of the game." Let's say scumref has a grand on Columbia to beat Paraguay. Paraguay is up 1-0, and Columbia is threatening(like that ever happens in soccer). Anyway, what's to stop referee from throwing a few extra mins on the clock?

4) Lack of scoring chances/shots on goal. If I hear how soccer is like hockey, I will go to prison for life, because I will maim the person who says it. Hockey can be 1-0, and be exciting as Hell. You can have 25-35 shots on goal and numerous scoring chances, but soccer, you are lucky to get three consecutive passes to conect.

5) Contact..err, lack therof. As mentioned earlier, these are the world's biggest pussies. They fall down and writhe in agony and pain, until referee pulls out a "yellow card." Ooohhh, a yellow card! Look out. Once card is pulled out, "injured dude" magically jumps up, and there is no sign of pain anylonger.

6) Fans, err, assholes. I just love a sport where the fans are tougher than the players. They throw ziplock bags of urine and blood, called urine bombs and bloodbombs on players, not to mention fireworks. Pitiful. A good reason I HATE all soccer playing nations. Thank God Canada and the USA suck in soccer.

7) Those gay soccer shin pads and even more gay shin guards. Shin guards? Are you fucking kidding me? I am starting to lose it.

In summation, when my son was 2, and he licked a soccer ball across the room, I immediately picked it up and said, "Bruce, you will never ever do that again! Understand?" I took that ball and stuffed it into the garbage can, before the Mexican kids across the street ripped it from the can, those littel bastards. Not because he was playing in the house. Hell, I built him an indoor hockey rink....He wasn't ever going to play that shit "sport" again. That alone made me a great parent.

Nothing personal to you Ray, you seem cool, but please realize, when a kid realizes he can play football, baseball, hockey, golf or basketball, he hates himself and his parents for making him play soccer.

One more thing that pisses me off about soccer.

Those Goddamned orange slices and capri sun drinks..WTF is that about?
