Edinburgh concert review-2/6/06

Postby gordon » Sun Jun 04, 2006 3:06 am

This is the day after the concert,Ive had time to think and reflect and am now prepared to try my best at reviewing this concert for you people,so here goes
First of all here is the set list:
1-seperate ways
2-ask the lonely
3-only the young
4-faith in the heartland
guitar solo
5-stone in love
6-wheel in the sky
7-where were you(dean vocals)
8-lights
9-still they ride(dean vocals)
10-just the same way
11-chain reaction
12-dead or alive
13-edge of the blade
14-who's cryin now
15-mother,father(dean vocals)
16-open arms
17-escape
18-out of harms way
19-faithfully
20-dont stop believin
21-any way you want it
22-be good to yourself
encores
23-keep on runnin
24-lovin,touchin,squeezin
time on stage =2hrs 10min
So there you go,that was the set list. Now for my views and opinions. To say i and my wife were excited about this concert is an understatement.I'd waited 23 years for this night and boy was it worth wiating for.Ive been to many concerts in my life(40 years old now)but i've never felt this kind of excitement vibrating around a venue before and probably never will. From the minute the house lights went down to the minute journey left the stage the atmosphere was electric. If the band had any doubts about what kind of reaction they would recieve they were gone within seconds of striding onto the stage and judging by the look on neals face after seperate ways came to a close ,even he and the rest of the guys were taken aback by the reception they were given.(Need to point out that i was 5 rows from the front right under neal)Edinburgh is a nice tight venue holding about 3,000.As steve called out to the audience "better late than never".I could go on forever but i wont as i know you americans have seen it all and heard it all before(many times)Highlight of the night for me was Dean singing still they ride, absolutley awsome. In my opinion as they say in boxing terms "pound for pound"dean is the best drummer in the world bar none!I only have 2 moans:i thought steve struggled on wheel in the sky,not just on bits of the song but most of it,which is a shame as this is one of my favorite songs however next song was lights and he was note perfect.only other moan was the merchandise on offer,2 t shirts for guys,2 shirt for girls,a journey flag, some key rings and stickers.I was hoping they would bring over some of there swag store gooodies from the official web site.
Well there you go a fantastic night,a fantastic performance from a fantastic band, life dosent get much better,i will now die a happy man

Sounds like it was a fantastic night.

I kept trying to not take too much notice of the set list here and in other reviews, just in case I was disappointed. Other than the obvious songs, for me there are a lot of surprises in there, Edge of the Blade - Mother,Father - Still they Ride - Where were You - Just the Same Way.
What a great set list.

I`m off to see them in Manchester on monday for the first time ever and I probably think that this is the most excited I`ve ever been about seeing a concert and I`ve been going since 1980.

Cheers for the review and roll on monday

I have read two reviews of the first concert in Europe, and it doesn't look that good. Steve A. struggling with some songs, taking the mic behind Jon for some reason. One person's review, which is not on this board, said that .....

"The Augeri period tracks didn’t set the heather alight, not that they aren’t good songs (Heartland), but they didn’t soar like the “classics"

I wonder about what will be said about the future concerts during this tour.

Went to Manchester last night and the set list was the same as Edinburgh with Ask the lonely and Just the Same Way omitted and Feeling that way and Anytime added.

Can`t comment on Edinburgh but Manchester was a special night.

Steve`s singing was absolutely spot on,well done to him.

Deen was a major surprise, not unlike Mr Perry.

Neal was fantastic, note for note perfection on the majority of songs with added improvisation on others. If I was to be critical it would be during the odd song, guitar solos were almost unrecognisable at times, namely Edge of the Blade which was the one song I was dying to hear but was probably the only disappointing song in an all round brilliant night but thats just my opinion.

Ross and Jon were both great in their roles.

Songs were great, Mother,Father was fantastic to hear.

Choice of songs was great, would have loved to of heard Send her my love.

Hmmm a very good setlist. I can see a few changes and tweaks here and there, "Dead or Alive" "Where Were You" seem like an interesting choice. They can always swap those around with somthing - maybe stick in "Send Her My Love".

Must have been on that Old Yeller board. Gutless swines they are there.

"Journey was suggested to us, we just kind of thought, 'This is cool.' They've had that longevity and have been there and had the hits. They're a great live band, they've obviously still got a very big following, and we just thought that the two of us together could equal something bigger than the sum of the parts. Ticket sales are reflecting that. They've been amazing.”
"At the end of the day, it's two good bands that can play live, they're real, they do it for the right reasons, and it's genuine, and we honestly believe that fans pick up on that."

Joe Elliot

Where's shania? Working on that new real story?

So sorry that you are so sad. And miserable. And classless.
And clueless.

Sorry Andrew, but I have to reply.I wouldn’t do it if this person would have kept off my back.
Now listen to me,Craigman,or whatever your name is,and listen good because I am going to say this just once.I have figured you out since second one you have posted here. You are a troublemaker and your post above proves it even more. You have done nothing but come here and play mind games.Thing is you don’t impress me and you don’t convince me.Your agenda is obvious as well as the mental state you're in .
As for your ill-mannered remarks…I assure you that I have more class in my pinky than you will ever have in your whole body. And,no,I am not sad at all.On the contrary – I am glad the truth came out.
Now please go climb back in the tree you came from.

Hey there Gordon thanks for posting your thoughts on
the show.
Glad you had a good time.
Escape and Mother Father are two faves.
Deen did vocals for Mother Father?....how did he fair on that?

"Where Were You" is amazing live.

It's incredible to watch Deen sing this song flawlessly while drumming like a madman.

Really gets the crowd going.
