Journey and Leppard lipping?

Postby bionic » Sun Jun 18, 2006 6:02 pm

With this rumour of Journey miming /lipping doing the rounds i wondered what Def Lepprd thought of this,as this is not good publicity for the co-headling tour?
There has been mention that a few other bands mimed/lipped at Sweden rock,i was told by the same guy who told me about Journey that Leppard were doing the same!!!!
Is this why they are able to tour together with no one worrying about the use of tapes?
I do accept that this may all be rubbish and hope it is belive me,but it shows classic rock bands of old in a poor light.A lot of the new up and coming bands will look at theses guys as past it and lose respect for them.Lets hope Journey can put our minds at rest this week with some form of statement to explain and end this nightmare.

Where does he say that? I never saw that on his blog. Deano, any comment on that? Stands to reason they'd get pulled into this too but usually Joe Elliott sounds bad enough to be believable. I asked about them on the blog and never got an answer from Deano.

Bionic, do you mind saying who your friend is that told you that? I don't mean personal stuff just if he was in the audience or part of the road crew or what? How could he tell?

He was there to review for a magazine and was backstage,he spoke to the promoters of Sweden Rock. I have no reason to doubt his word.
A lot of people must have heard about this as Sweden Rock attracts a lot of people from the music press as this is a great festival, some say the best. :!:

Thanks Bionic, I guess anything is possible but I haven't seen too many people agree that DL does it simply because their singer isn't a singer like Steve Augeri for instance and isn't the idea of lipsyncing done to make it sound good? :D Joe Elliott sounds rough these days.

Was gonna reply in your other thread but it got locked so here it is; I have located the Swedish sound engineer/journalist so he is very real and has confirmed his story and I know you know what story that is but he's also interested in who you are since you say you made that call. I understand where the mistake could have been made and how from what we talked about so let me know if you want his info, he will talk to you.

If Lep is lipping, it still doesn't sound that great. Joe's voice has not help up that well over the years.
If Steve is lipping, what are we saying he is lipping too? His older tracks, or newer tracks that he's had a chance to polish? Are we saying that he actually used to sing really good, but his voice has just gotten bad lately and he is lip syncing, but to his own stuff?

Please leave Def Leppard out of this. From what I've read, this is a Journey issue, not a Def Leppard issue.

Thank you :D

Who the Hell are you to tell me what to do, Lady?

You had better rethink your plans of attack.

Joe Elliott sounds like crap. Did you hear him on VH1 Rock Honors? He sounds OK in the low ranges, but when he tries to sing a little high, forget it. He SHOULD use tapes.

I didn't tell you what to do, I simply asked. I wasn't aware that making a request had become forbidden in the world of forums. Perhaps I'm wrong.

I do know that making a request is allowed in the rest of the world. I guess not in forums. My bad.

And I don't attack. I make requests. I state opinions. Attack is not in my personality. :D

Someone had asked me about DL...

Sorry, I am trying to tone down my attacks/behavoir/language and delivery.

However, in 24 hours, this place wil look like downtown Baghdad.

Everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. :D

I enjoy Joe Elliott's voice. I enjoy Def Leppard's music.

How sad that when I make a request to leave Def Leppard out of a Journey discussion that the people in that discussion use it as an excuse to make snide remarks about Joe Elliott.

Did you think he sounded GOOD? It is simply a fact that his voice has not aged well.

Your apology is accepted. :D

I've spent a great deal of this day reading your blog, this forum and other sites that have discussed this issue and I can understand that you are somewhat defensive.

However, I really think that Def Leppard should be left out of this issue.

My primary concern is what impact this will have on the upcoming tour. I have tickets to three different shows ...

Yeah, but guess what? SOME OF US ENJOY JOURNEY'S MUSIC. Why is it all good to kill Journey's career but don't you dare touch DL? Especially if they do the same thing...

Why is JOURNEY the public enemy when many more bands do this (DL?)? Why can they be trashed and "made an example of"?

Actually yes. Joe Elliott does not have nor did he ever have what could be called a trained singing voice.

What he has is a compelling voice ... a voice that draws people in - me included. I enjoy the tone/timbre of his voice.

Yes, I know that at times it cracks. It's sometimes uneven. But it is HIS voice that drew me into Def Leppard's music.

There are many highly regarded musicians that don't have trained or classic voices. They have distinctive voices and that's what some of us enjoy. :D

I am no bashing Elliott, even though he deserves it (just keeping with the "karma" theme that has been so popular in here lately). To my ears, it barely even sounds like Joe Elliott anymore.

Who said it was "good to kill Journey's career ..." ? I didn't. I was merely asking that Def Leppard be left out of a Journey discussion.

According to whom?

Agree. You could throw Joe Cocker or Bryan Adams in there and no one would know the difference.

According to Dean, who started this whole thing. You sound like you support the damning of Journey but not Def Leppard when you defend the latter, especially when both cases would probably have the exact SAME type of 'evidence'.

Leaving DL out of the "Journey" discussion lays all the blame for tape-singing on Journey, when it is NOT a Journey discussion, it's actually more of an INDUSTRY in general discussion.

Joe Cocker does have a very distinctive voice -- another one that I enjoy immensely. He doesn't have what you would call a classic voice, but one that is unique and quite enjoyable.

It is the uniqueness of some of these performers that draw me in.

Yep, and this whole thing is going to take on a downhill effect.

If you point the finger at one, you might as well point the finger at everyone else that is doing it. Fair is fair. Regardless of what Andrew has to say, this has gone on so long that the backlash is going to be predictable.

I agree. That was what drove me to Perry. he is the best singer ever, but his voice is so unique. Very hard to emulate. Jeremy of Frontiers and Hugo are close.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought this whole issue was initially brought up by the gentleman in Sweden who sometimes works sound.

I've asked him if he noted the same thing about Def Leppard and he said he had no reason to believe Def Leppard was doing this.

A Fire Inside wrote:You sound like you support the damning of Journey but not Def Leppard when you defend the latter, especially when both cases would probably have the exact SAME type of 'evidence'.

I don't have a "dog in this fight." Journey is a band I've enjoyed over the years, but no, I'm not really a fan. I would like to think that this whole thing is a misunderstanding, but I'll wait to see what information is provided.

My main concern is what impact this will have on the upcoming tour. If it upsets my plans to see Def Leppard this summer, I'll be mad enough to kick someone in the shin. I'm not sure who, but someone.

A Fire Inside wrote:Leaving DL out of the "Journey" discussion lays all the blame for tape-singing on Journey, when it is NOT a Journey discussion, it's actually more of an INDUSTRY in general discussion.

I've read this forum most of this day and I've seen little or no discussion of the music industry ... primarily it's been about Journey.

Forgive me for butting in, I don't really want to debate this issue because I'm just not that familiar with Journey.

My heart goes out to Journey fans, both those who believe this is true and those who don't.

But, I just don't see that it's fair to drag Def Leppard into it.
