Obviously Journey didn't like it much because Neal hardly sings backup on any songs from Escape onward.. Its Perry overdubbed on himself.

Yeah, the infamous "chorus of Perry's". One of the things that bothers me the most about ROR. I don't think this was used on ESC4P3 or Frontiers as much as ROR.

Sounded awesome to me and I was 5th row center, but that's mho.

But was it really them singing background? Because it wouldn't have sounded like the albums from Escape onward, because that was only Perry singing backup on himself.

Their harmonies that were so prevalent on Infinity, Evolution, and Departure took a major hit when Rollie left. Besides After the Fall and Girl Can't Help It, I can't think of another classic Journey harmony song after Rollie left.

Annie, ROR is really the only one where the chorus of Perry's is utilized as BG vox on every song. I can hear the other guys fine on ESC4P3 and Frontiers, granted moreso on ESC4P3.

NIG, remember NoMoreTails' classic "I don't like the 'Choir Of Perrys.'" line? :)

BTW, I am certain I can actually hear a good deal of NS on ROR. The liner notes even have exactly which members sang bg othe than the choir of perries on each song. I also don't see the need for the more than 1 perry bg track unless he's doing it in different pitches and harmonies.

Sorry Annie, I'm only assuming they were singing backup vocals because their mouths were moving. This was 1981/1982 for goodness sake. You going to tell me they were lip synching? Go ahead. Oops, never mind, someones going to post it was backing tapes. Whatever.

And I still don't are for it.
Want a comparison of Neal and the guys doing backing vocals to the choir of Perrys? Listen to how much better the bvs are on the live version of I'll Be Alright Without You (video & single) vs the album version.
I don't think the issue was that Journey didn't like the way Neal sounded, I think its just that Perry got off on hearing a quartet of himself.

well, to be fair, Ross, Neal, and Jon have nowhere near the range of Perry to hit some of those harmonies. Unfortunately Journey was not Queen or Fleetwood Mac, and wasn't blessed with 3 strong vocalists.

The irony is that the current incarnation of Journey is actually the strongest vocal lineup they've ever had if Augeri was healthy. Jon is a passable singer, but (a healthy) Steve and Deen in the same band is killer.

name me a song where the others are singing on Escape, Frontiers, or ROR. Don't Stop Believin' is Perry backing himself, same with Who's Cryin Now, Stone In Love. Still they ride has no backing vocals. Escape you maybe can here NS/JC but it may be Perry backing himself up again.
Frontiers same thing except for Chain Reaction. I challenge you to name one Raised On Radio song where there is any backup vocalist besides Perry.

Journey lost out when Rollie left - he was their only good backup singer. Cain simply doesn't have the pipes.

I am not disputing ROR. That is where Perry took control of everything and ruined the band.

I hear NS and JC on ESC4P3, Lay It Down, Keep on Runnin', SIL, Dead or Alive, MF. I ALSO hear Perry singing with them, but I also hear NS and JC.

On Frontiers, SW, SHML, After the Fall (very strongly), and on side 2 not much...

Deen lead vocal on remix record

Postby waxerman » Mon Jun 26, 2006 3:09 am

Hey,

Deen sings a great lead vocal on a new remix of "Don't Stop Believin'" by remixer The Hitmaker, and they're giving the money to charity. It's on iTunes as well on CD.

Don't Stop Believin' (featuring Deen Castronovo) by The Hitmaker

Pretty impressive performance. I heard there's a great acoustic mix coming out at the end of the summer on iTunes.
