Does anybody know?

Postby TRAGChick » Tue Jun 27, 2006 9:09 am

Why was the "new incarnation" of Journey never supported?

By "support", I mean by radio. Not once did I EVER hear a Post-Perry Journey song on CT radio. If it's different where you are, then please let me know.

IMO, if they were, then it would be like the "good old days":

They'd be supporting the NEW MATERIAL on tours...so therefore, the tours would be a few years apart...like "Escape" to "Frontiers" to "ROR"...81-82; 83, and 86....because they'd be releasing new material and TAKING BREAKS.

And, there'd be no "blown vocal chords" from touring Summer..after Summer...after Summer...relying heavily on the "Golden Oldies", so to speak.

Thoughts?

I have never heard a post-Perry Journey song on the radio. If I did hear one, then I didn't recognize it (this is possible since I don't know any of their Augeri-led music) or the DJ didn't announce it as such.

I'm in TN.

Maybe it goes back to all that legal conspiracy theory surrounding SP...

I think they hoped Augeri would break free of the GH and leave his own musical mark, but sadly, it never came to pass.
So he ended up blowing out his voice singing the hits - u couldnt be more right!
I know most of the stuff on Arrival was turned to trash by Augeri live in concert when I saw him.
What high range?

There's a local DJ that's hardcore Journey, (Perry era), that has no problem promoting the band when they come to town, but he has only played Higher Place once or twice and State of Grace a time or two as well. That's it. Other than that, since he's on a classic rock station, they pretty much stick to the "dirty dozen" unfortunately.

You also have the people who came out of the woodwork and never publicly supported the band, that still to this day say that Perry is Journey, no one can replace hium. So, I guess it's that whole mentality. No matter what you really feel about Steve A. he never stood a chance on radio.

edited to add - I said a few times over the weekend here, that they needed to be more like the old days as far as touring every few years, but we all know it's the whole money situation keeping them out on the road. Perry invested very wisely by all accounts, and the rest are near broke-(ish), comparatively speaking.

Journey spent too much time trying to recapture their old fans that they never considered new ones. Sony didn't want the band without Perry...I think that is obvious. Then they went out of their way to get a Journey album that sounded as much like the old Journey instead of a new Journey. That didn't work and it helped cement the band to a nostalgia thing. Finally, I don't think Journey had enough confidence in themselves and their new music...

to be honest with you it seemed that neal thought sa was just a subsitute; never seemed to have much faith in him. no matter how much the band complained about sp; he was like their compass; cause the band is drifting aimlessly without a course. what do they stand for? making money.

Maybe Sony could look into the Future?

Can you imagine what a label would think of these guys now? They would run for cover.

Well, IMO, Sony had preconcieved notions of how well Arrival would do and basicaly let it fall flat. Kevin Shirley also said this in interviews. There wasalso the Napster thing...Jonathan made comments that this basicaly ended his desires for writing...why go through all the trouble if people are just going to download it for free anyway? So, after Sony's handling of Arrival, and the Napster thing, I don't think Journey has even seriously thought about a label...and I don't think they have taken recording or having a 'hit' that seriously either. So, no, I don't think either Red 13 or Generations had any hope of having a hit single or selling platinum, or whatever, - and I don't think the band cared much.

well the recordings came from someone either in the Journey or Sony Camp. There was way too much time between the time they came onto the net, and the U.S. Release, damn near a year if I recall correctly. If it was anyone in the Journey camp, trying to drum up support then obviously they failed miserably. If it was someone in the Sony camp, then they fucked themselves as well as Journey. They could have had a much bigger seller, if they'd have released the CD clsoe to the time that it came to the net.
