ROR Tour

Postby zino » Thu Jul 27, 2006 6:47 am

This has probably been talked about here before but I was always curious about this. When Journey toured for ROR I saw them for the first time in the Meadowlands in October (this show was the same day the ground ball went through Bill Buckners legs) PErry sang the encore with a Met Jersey on . Any way when did the tour cancel out, did they start dropping shows or did they finish the tour off and just break apart. I thoughtI read that they layed their last show in Alaska. Was curious if they just quit mid tour. Too bad we didnt have the internet back then we could of kept up so much eaiser.

Was the reason they quit the tour Randy Jackson split all his pants

Just kidding

Im sure someone here has some info and insight on this, back in 1986 I though I would never see them live again until 12 Years later.

The playoffs against the Yankees was better than winning the Series, in my opinion.

Well, I know they played at home in San Francisco about a week before Christmas that year, having missed BOTH shows they did at the Cow Palace and I think those were the last shows of the tour before they did the one gig in Anchorage in February. I vaguely recall mention of a summer tour for '87, though that may just be hindsighted delusion since I *know* when I couldn't go to the Cow Palace shows I was only moderately pissed off because I thought that I'd see them come summer time. Yeah, summer time 1998.... (okay, technically FALL 1998, but I *could* have seen Journey summer 1998 if fates hadn't consipired against me yet again... ;) )

Steve Lake's site probably has the ROR tour dates up still.

They did indeed play their last show in Alaska in January of 1987. They did two shows in Hawaii (which is where I saw them) and then went to Alaska and that was it. Later, Jon revealed the band knew that was the end for Journey but there was no public announcement, no farewell tour, etc. Hmmmm dejavu?

I saw the ROR tour in Fresno in '86. Hey, is there *any* footage or live boots of that particular show anywhere?

I hope that the "Powers that Be" will release an ROR concert - like the "Escape" DVD.

None that I know of Jabber........ but I did come across a live ROR boot from Ohio and one from Long Beach on New Years Eve. The Ohio one is an audience recording tho. :D

Also, Neal and Jonathan did a guest spot on MTV called "San Francisco Shakeup". In it they were asked about what the future was for Journey...Neal said, "You'll have to ask Steve Perry that question!" Then they joked about it a bit and yelled to some lady looking out a window, "Hey, do you wanna be the new lead singer for Journey?" They went to comercial and came back...they asked again and Jonathan said they were going back to the studio later this year, in October because October is always a good month to record albums, and have an album out in time for a tour in 1988...He was obviously just making it up as he went along. All Neal could say is that he was going to look into touring with Jan Hammer...this was before BE, of course.

The story goes, I think it may even be on the BTM, Journey was to continue on to a second half of the tour...But, Perry met with Neal and Jonathan and basicaly wanted to quit, take a break, whatever...then, that was it. No tour dates were 'canceled'...just the idea of a second part of the tour.

If you follow things from there, Perry took two years off and then started writing, recording, and producing a solo album. By that time, Neal and Jonathan (and Deen) started Bad English. Then BE broke up and Neal entered Hardline. The Storm came out and had some OK success...Then the idea for a Journey reunion without Perry came about as Perry was releasing FTLOSM and touring. It got to the point of writing songs with Neal, Jon, Gregg, and Chalfant...but Sony push Perry back into the band, and the TBF album and "tour" was the result.

That's the history in a nutshell.

So there was talkmof using Cain, Schon, Rollie and Chalfant as Journey, who was on bass I wonder. I knew about Perry on tour ( I saw him) but he canclled the second time around twice I believe.
I was listening to TBF today and as I listen alot of the songs sound like a Perry solo album, really pretty mello, Message of Love and One MOre are good, Castles Burning but alot of ballads and not really a Journey Sound.

ROR and TBF are a totally different sound for Journey, very R&B and ballad oriented. Thats my opinion. Thats what amke Arrivala good CD some good rocking tnes and the ballads have more of an edge to them

Thanks for all the info

If it was July '86 -- weren't they still drummerless at that point? I know the tour started at Mtn. Aire and that was in August. (another bit of historical stupidity on my part.)

Hoarding boots? That's very frowned upon in trading circles.

I don't even know if this one is any good. However, a show you got of mine (indirectly) helped start all the blog stuff and rightly so. The least you can do is send me a copy of this if the sound quality is decent. LOL

A "board blew"? Um, what, they couldn't get another board in town? They had no backup plan? Hard to believe.

I remember when I lived back in Binghamton, NY and a rock concert was happening at the arena. Apparently, one of the bands' drums needed new heads because something had happened to a number of them during the road trip. It was after business hours and the owner himself of one of the town's music stores came down, opened it up, let them take what they needed and sent a bill later! Even in a small town like Binghamton, there are music stores. And before someone says "drum heads are different than sound boards," that's true, however it boggles my mind to even CONSIDER the fact that a band as big as Journey would not have had any backup at their disposal.
