They're 2 totally different singers.

I don't think you can really compare them.

I mean it is what it is. I'm an Augeri head through and through and support him. Doesn't mean I can't get along w/ the other side

Funny, I wasn't aware I was a member of any camp.
At least I can proudly say I am not a member of the willfully deaf, dumb, and blind.
Tell me one more time Red just how great Augeri "sings" TPIYH on your Greek and Beacon boots.
I need the laugh.

Yep, u are such a hardcore Augeri fan that you cannot distinguish his own actual voice from a stack of tapes.

None. Augeri's recordings are great. Everthing he's recorded with Tall Stories AND Journey is great. I have no problems with him. Yeah, it's my opinion, but I favor his vocal style over Sotos. I hated the Soul Sirkus record. I'm in the minority, and that's cool, but I thought it was boring and it all sounded the same. I just can't get into him on SS. I haven't heard him do anything else but the bootlegs out there which horrified me. I've listened to SS 3 times and hated it. Sorry, that's my spin. I think Neal was much better with Hardline, which is a great album. Augeri's a great singer. Soto might be too, but I don't dig his style at all. Augeri's high notes float more and Sotos are forced.

We're talking about recorded work here so I don't want to get into the tapegate crap... :)

Aside from SoulSirkus and a few misc songs I downloaded, I haven't heard any of JSS's other recorded album work.
I have heard and own everything Augeri's ever done, and I like his style more, too.

Then why did you mention the Soto bootlegs which "horrified" you?

touche'!
Good point! I Shouldn't have mentioned that, but those were the only things I'd heard by him so those 3 are how I judged his voice. Shoulda just stuck with ONLY the SS reference.
SO to clarify- I didn't like him on the SS record and I like everything Augeri's ever recorded that I've heard.

how's zat?

Actually, I just mentioned them to clarify that I've only heard the SS and that 'other stuff'. Haven't heard Talisman or anything else.

That's fine.
I happen to think JSS and Augeri both sound good on record.
Though I happen to like Augeri's voice more.
He sounds like a young Perry without that grating oil squeak quality to it.

Do you actually prefer Augeri to "a young Perry"?

By the way, is the "oil squeak" the same quality which the UK press used to describe as "the Duck"?

No, they both have their moments.
i just like how Augeri's studio voice is high pitched without the shrillness that accompanied Perry in his younger days.

What's the 'shrill' period? 78-81?

Right. The young perry to me was actually great. The Escape and before stuff. Frontiers and on, he sounded more like Brian Adams. RASP! That's how I think of Augeri's voice, like that Escape period Journey. Augeri could use a bit more low end though. Still, I got no problem with him.

I can just about see the Adams comparison on "Frontiers" - just - but not on "ROR". Perry's range was incredible on that album.

Absolutely re ROR. The finest Perry vocals ever without a doubt.

Also i would rather hear JSS any freakin day of the week than to listen to Augeri warble his way through everything, except in a live setting of course cause we aint hearing the real him then, now are we.

This I can roll with...I liked Perry's vox much better when he lost the shrill shrieks come, long about ESC4P3 maybe even Departure. Augeri never had that anyway, not being a TOTAL SP ringer had it's aural benefits.

which songs

Postby tupchurch » Wed Aug 02, 2006 5:24 am

We would probably be surprised at just how many songs JSS could do and do quite well. I have been surprised on songs I didn't think JSS could do like Dead or Alive.

Augeri's non-Journey work showcases this more extensively (Shine, Tall Stories).
On occassion, he would still utilize it within Journey (Kiss Me Softly, Butterfly)

I completely agree with you. I didn't like SS at all either. But I do like much of Soto's other work. They should have gone with someone who sounds more like "Journey". JMHO
