Rock Star

Postby Aaron » Wed Aug 02, 2006 12:36 pm

Alright,

I'm watching Rock Star right now on VH1. It seems weird the parallels of this show to Journey's recent, and not so recent, situation. I take it this is a story about Judas Priest? I'm about half way through it now. Anyhow, who is the dude singing? It surely isn't the gay dude playing the part of the new lead singer? Isn't that Markie Wahlberg or something? The guy who is singing has a good metal type of voice. It reminds me of a local band here in Indiana called Relic. The lead singer has a phenomenal metal voice. Its weird though when this dude tries to cover the smoother stuff like Def Leppard or Poison. The metal style voice just isn't smooth enough to cover these types of tunes well. They haven't tried doing any Journey yet but I suspect it wouldn't work. Anyhow, it was just weird as I was watching Rock Star and seeing the parallels.

Larry,

"Stand Up and Shout" does kick ass. You should hear Sammy Hagar do it if you haven't already. As a matter of fact, the whole CD Not 4 Sale kicks ass!

Let me clarify...Jeff Scott Soto is the man behind the vocals of the original Steel Dragon singer. When Wahlberg becomes the lead singer, the actual vocals there are done by Mike Matejevic (Steelheart...a phenomenal singer in his own right).

Here's a quote from an interview with JSS...

JSS: Mike did the vocals for Mark Wahlberg’s voice; I did the vocals for the guy that was the initial singer of Steel Dragon. The one where Mark Wahlberg was in the audience with his buddies at the concert, the guy that was on the stage was me. I also did the first song in the movie while they were riding in the pick-up truck and the song that played during the credits. Two of the song I sang ended up in the movie, and three of the songs I sang ended up on the soundtrack.

So, I guess that makes JSS the gay guy... Image

Dude,

You are shitting me right? The gay dude I was referring to was Mark Wahlberg in the movie. Anyhow, if it is JSS for real, then please close the thread right now to avoid the forecasted shit storm that is coming. I had no idea.

My apologies,

Aaron

P.S. Thanks for the details.

The gay dude is the one who takes the wig off in the studio at the house where Steel Dragon is recording their new album in the movie.

Is there anything funnier than "gay dudes?" I think not.

I mean, shit! A hot, shaved, lingerie laced woman, or a smelly, shit stained underwear guy? Hmm, toughie...

Yeah, I can see myself going for a guy with skid marks in his drawers...

Dude,

I picked up on the first singer being light in the loafers during the movie. I just thought Markie Wahlberg was a bit of a tosser in that show as well.

No. Most of the songs were done by Mike Matajevic, formerly of Steelheart. See my quote from JSS earlier in this thread.

It was the first show with his solo band ever!... and they recorded a DVD from it...haha... only Jeff is crazy enough to do something like that!
The DVD is called "JSS Live At The Gods 2002"... pretty cool!
Bass & acoutic guitar: Gary Schutt
Guitar: Howie Simon
Drums: Alex Papa
On his media site are more samples of this DVD...

iLex,

Thanks for the video. JSS really rocks on that song, almost as well as Sammy himself. When I listen to that song sung by JSS, it really shows his strength in vocals. That type of music fits his natural style quite well. It goes back to my original comment, guys who are great metal vocalists are not smooth enough to cover Journey IMHO. There's no question that JSS is a great singer with good stage presence and leadership skills. However, I'll still stick to my guns on my original thought, he is not the right singer for Journey. They are fucking up as we speak ....
