I prefer Journey to be more neutral, that's all.

Neutral? There are no sides taken in that lyric at all.

Was it okay to advocate fast and loose sex in "Any Way You Want It"?

I wish this was true, but it's not. Def Leppard still has a strong presence on the VH1 video countdown, rock radio, and the talk show circuit. I haven't seen Journey promoting the tour on Regis and Kelly or Leno.

In my opinion Journey is the better band, but not the most commercially relevant of the two. People want to see the original band with the original members (or at least the ones they remember). Journey hasn't had any real commercial success with their albums since Steve Perry left (or was replaced). Def Leppard has the advantage of still being intact with their original singer.

When I saw Journey in Nashville, the place wasn't even full until Def Leppard took the stage. People kept filtering in during Journey's set, but it wasn't a mad rush to get to your seat like it was before Def Leppard came on. I suspect that a lot of people there were fans of both bands, but most people came to see Def Leppard first and Journey second.

It's a quote from the Bible... some of Journey's fans aren't Christians, believe it or not. But it's not a huge deal to me, beause I said I liked the song anyway.

How can you compare AWYWI to that?

Not to discount your theory...but from the reviews I read from Nashville, the traffic was a BIG reason why people were late or couldn't get there at ALL. Again, from what I read, it was the worst traffic jam on the tour so far. Then again, Starwood is normally HORRIBLE with traffic jams and parking from what my brother tells me. Especially from Murfreesbro.

I'd say it was inspired by the verse, but not quoted, since they left a lot out. Songwriters get their inspiration from everywhere. Who knows what Jon was thinking when he penned the lyrics? The fact that got inspiration from biblical verse means nothing, in my opinion. Kansas took inspiration from the Bible as have many others.

Many of Journey's fans are Christians, myself included. What difference does it make even if you're not a Christian?

AWYWI is comparable in the same way. If they can't promote Christianity through their lyrics, why then would it be okay to promote anything else, including fast and loose sex?

It's pretty useless to argue with you about this because they're your beliefs. That's fine, whatever. I personally would prefer if they hadn't quoted the Bible, and that's it! I'm not on a crusade to change the lyrics. I still like the song. If they had quoted from the Koran would you still think the same?

I try to never take Journey's music extremely seriously, therefore I do prefer the light 'topical' songs and it does turn me off a bit when they try to get too deep. The Journey I fell in love with was all about love on the Dixie Highway with bluejean girls, so yes, I do think AWYWI fits with that. If a band singing about free love and groupies bothers you, maybe you shouldn't be into classic rock.

I also think the line about "lonely tears of clowns" in I'm Cryin' is really stupid, but no one's questioning that dislike, are they...

I think Perry's voice POWER and Schon's guitar work overshadow the crappy lyrics in that song. At least for me it does. 8)

You're putting words in my mouth. I didn't say the subject matter of AWYWI bothers me. I was just using it as an example. No, I don't care for the subject matter but it's not something that I get into a tizzy over, either. I just don't care much for the song.

If a band singing about faith and hope bothers you, maybe you shouldn't be into classic rock (you'd be surprised how many songs deal with this subject).

Hey, that's fine. Journey is one of just a few CR bands I follow closely and thus scrutinize everything they put out. Any other band singing Bible quotes I probably wouldn't give much thought to.

I didn't get into a tizzy about TBF either. 8) It was just a passing comment blown out of proportion.

I know. Just exaggerating your response to prove a point. Happens all the time.

I hate Just the Rain too. "Just" is a lame word to use in lyrics. It means nothing. It's a copout lyrically.
As far as the bible thing... I liked it on the Deen Generations cut. I'm NO way a bible person either, but it fit.

Let's please not subject Journey lyrics to literary criticism....

They sang one absurdity and cliche after another about "the night" and "this night" and "lovin" and "believin'" and "singin' about the lovin' touch" and "city lights", "streetlights" and "street of broken dreams" etc etc etc etc...and I love them for it!
