My take on Journey pro shot DVD 1999 show Virginia Beach

Postby McNeil » Fri Aug 04, 2006 3:36 am

I just received my copy of the above

A few of you have this already, so please skip to the questions at the end.

Here's the setlist: Virginia Beach 6/15/99 100 minutes trader/seller describes the show as "A" quality

Separate Ways
Ask the Lonely
Stone in Love
Remember Me
Send Her My Love
Lights
Open Arms
Just the Same Way
Anytime
Escape
Keep on Running
Wheel in the Sky
Be Good to Yourself
AnyWay You Want It
Lovin Touchin Squeezin
Don't Stop Believin
Faithfully
Only the Young

First thing first: Colour is slightly washed out, but still ok. Sound very good except for slight "wow and flutter" on first couple songs, prob due to transfer from Vid to DVD

No titles, and footage seems fairly "raw"

Have to say, after a complete viewing, this is essential for all Journey fans!!!!!!

SteveA's voice is way up in the mix here, far louder than the official Vegas DVD, so everything is clear, and not hidden at all.

Steve himself is still sporting his dark haired "barnet" pre-perm lol

Deen is in his burger n fries days, hair quite long too. Ross has shoulder length hair, and Neal has almost an uncool "crew cut"

Jon is even managing to smile a great deal, so I guess he must have used all his quota up during this gig, haha

Let me say that the band really seem to be enjoying this, it seems maybe they cant quite believe the good reaction Steve A is receiving. I suppose most people , like today. thought that Perry was still there?

Steve A is confident throughout, surprising given he is very much the new boy here.

I noticed that he is often "pulling" away with the mic to create softer notes and phrases, a good indication that this is "all live"

I can honestly say that back then, he was a great choice for the band, everything is firing on all 6, so what the fuck happened?

questions

Why was this show recorded?

Why was it never shown or aired anywhere?

This gig is a great testament to Steve A's ability at the time

Anyone wanting to obtain, please pm me for details

Neil

You will have to give me some time to recode and upload Larry... I have my kids here on vacation with me, and they are biting my legs constantly. I will see what I can do :D

I've never seen this, but it likely comes from the feed sent to the video screens on the side of the stage. I have a few boots from these sources (everything from Springsteen in 1984 to Aerosmith a few years ago). Mostly closeups, since the goal was not to film for release but to show the faces of the band to the people in the back.

As for what happened? He just blew his voice out singing outside of his range at that level every night. I imagine if JSS isn't careful the same thing might happen to him.

well. you could be right, but I feel that there are far too many wide angle shots here for that to be the case

He seems very comfortable with the songs here, but I suppose like Perry, this kind of stuff wears you down over a period of time

God help JSS

Ok Im answering my own question partly here.

Toward the end of the gig, Augeri says that "the show is being recorded for some people in cyber space, on the ntl network" ???

well Im on NTL broadband UK, but it sure as hell wasnt running in the States, and not in 1999. I have the feeling he meant the "audio" , but I may be wrong.

Hmmm, then maybe it was shot for some kind of proposed broadcast that never materialized?

The video screen feed was just the first thing I thought of...there's a lot of boots going around from different bands leaked out by insiders at the venues. I've seen several from the amphitheater in Camden, NJ especially.
