Steve Perry NJ 95 boot

Postby brywool » Tue Aug 08, 2006 3:39 am

Wow. Not sure if you've heard this boot or not (guitars101) but I missed Perry's solo tour because of work.
I had always heard that his voice was crap on this tour and that's why he doesn't tour.
Listening to this boot, I was pretty bloody impressed. He cracks in a few spots, but nothing that kills the song or the feel. One thing about Perry that was very cool is that when he would change the vocal line live to suit his voice's condition, he usually did something really creative rather than just wimping out on the note (never heard him do that really) or singing the line an octave lower or something. It's like a guitarist that will just improv, but with his voice, you know? Perry was the king of that. It's really good. I never heard this guy strain live. I've heard a million recordings of him live and I've only heard him strain once and that's in Back Talk from Frontiers. Great boot.

I downloaded that this morning too! I haven't listened to it yet - waiting for the car ride home from work. :D

I also downloaded this boot yesterday. I still have to extract the files from their .rar state. There are alot of other bands I have found boots for over at Guitars101. I check the site frequently during the day to see what, if anything, is new. :D

make sure you change it to have the .rar extension. When I downloaded that (or the jss clarkston boot) they were missing the .rar tags. Once you drop those on, just unrar it and you should be good to go.

He also had sense enough to bring that old stuff down a half step.

"Only the Young" almost doesn't sound like the same song. Very different take.

Cool post! Appreciate it. Good quality.

Smarter - Journey should have done this for Augeri, and now for JSS. The essence of the songs remain in tact.

CRYSTAL CLEAR? Hardly. Whoever recorded this turned his mix up so far that it is ALL distorted. Everytime a a loud bit comes up, it is squelched out. It may be better then your video, but it is FAR away from 'crystal clear'.

Well, I wouldn't say crystal clear either, but it's a good audience recording.

Thank you for uploading these! I got the clips earlier but hadn't sat down to figure out how to open them.

I wish he hadn't cancelled that tour... I had tickets in hand... *sigh* This is the first time I've heard it!

That Lincoln Brewster was also a hell of a guitar player on that tour. What was he, like 23, and brought out from nowhere. SP said that Randy Jackson gave him a tape and told him about Lincoln.

True, for an AUDIENCE RECORDING - it's "good", not great, and DEFINITELY not 'crystal clear". It doesn't stand up to anything other then other audience recordings that have the recording level turned up too high. As soon as he tries to belt anything out, it's distorted. To say, for example, "there's no rasp.." Well, duh, it's so distorted, you wouldn't be able to hear it if there was.

It's a fun recording, if you're a Perry fan, but if all you want to do is hear the song - it's NOT all that great.

The boot I saw was a copy of a copy of a copy....that's why I said that the sound was "crappy".

The sound on this iMac G5 IS clear - and almost surround-like - 4 speakers.
No distortion happening here....

Bullshit. I sat here and watched the levels on my player. They are CONSTANTLY in the red and when it gets loud, they are maxed. THAT means it was recorded with the input level too high and the RECORDED sound IS distorted. It doesn't matter what you play it on - the recording itself is bad. If it was recorded with the input levels 'normalized', it would sound COMPLETELY different.
