Is "Freedom" still viable?

Postby The_Noble_Cause » Wed Aug 09, 2006 2:25 am

As any staunch Journey fan already knows, the one-word title, "Freedom" was always supposed to be a part of the Journey titular cannon.
In fact, it was supposed to be the title of the follow up to "Frontiers."
At Perry's insistance, the one-word titles were left behind and Journey took a different course.
However, as recently as last year, Neal ((allegedly)) said that he still wanted to use the title.
Here's the question;
In these post-911 times, can Journey still use the title without sounding like some contryfried pseudo-patriotic Toby Keith dickhammer?

I would think that because of 911 and the fact
that Journey have always appeared to be a good wholesome
American band that FREEDOM would be an excellent choice....
However because it is well known among Journey fans
that it was a previous title I don't think it would be as liked.

I like it as a title though...

I think it could work, but I think "Liberty" would work better and perhaps even including a reworked, souped-up, version of the song of the same name on the album would work. As far as the pseudo-patriotic stuff, Journey's going to get beat up by the critics anyway, so why not just stick it to them again?

With it's quasi middle eastern sounding chords, "State of Grace" would make the perfect opener.

I don't think Journey could ever sound like the above reference, Neal it too fucking cool!! No reason as far as I'm concerned that "Freedom" could not be used. I can think of a few relevant subjects to apply freedom to, as in free from....., free to....., etc.

Perhaps if they use the title "CONQUEST" as suggested in the other thread, maybe the album art could depict the scarab just decimating the entire Islamic Fascist world. THAT would rock!

Freedom could still be used. It wouldn't say America is imposing her views. Freedom means to be able to as you want. Whether you are telling about Journey or the state of the world-ERIC

No, they can't. That's exactly how they would come off, at least in my eyes. FITH and OOHW was enough, let's stay away from that, guys.

What ever happened to the Journey Concept album Neal mentioned a couple years back? Freedom could be a good title for something like that!

Here is a one word title for the next Journey album if the band listens to some of the fools in here:

There isn't any reason why the title of "Freedom" would be considered insulting or improper. The only problem with using it is the fact that most of us knew it was supposed to have been used instead of "Raised on Radio." I think people read too much into all this political mumbo jumbo.

Even the guy that made up that name now regrets it, and thinks the occupation is a joke.

That's the thing, when HH concocted it, I don't think "Freedom" necessarily had as strong a jingoistic connotation as it does today.

That's true...and it will give Herbie one more thing to point to and say, "Yeah, I dreamed up that title up 30 years ago. I even approved the cover art. But, Perry had to change the title to ROR and had that gay radio station cover. The rest of the guys backed Perry cuz they were afraid he'd quit on them...so it was changed. Now they want to go back to it, idiots.".
