? 4 the singers on this board

Postby ArnelRox » Thu Aug 10, 2006 5:09 pm

Ok this is a serious thread & I wanna hear from the singers here plz. U r a good singer. U've spent all ur life trying to make it. So far, nothing big. U get an opportunity of a lifetime 2 sing w/ur favorite band of all time as lead. The band isn't making ne chart toppers but u get to be on TV on a show about the band, u get to tour every yr, u get to do radio shows, etc.

Fast forward: a few yrs into this gig, u lose ur voice & can't sing nemore. Some1 suggests u use tapes & the feed that goes 2 the crowd will be the taped version. Meanwhile u act on stage like u r singing. No 1 knows any different. U can pass 4 a singer and go on. The band is good w/u doing this. They will support u.

Honestly, what do u do?

There r some here who say neone would take the tape opportunity. I really wanna know. Would u? Tell the truth.

You forgot to mention that if caught, you would be jeapordizing a legacy that took 30 years to build.

But what if, to add to all of the above, the band also gets u to put pen to paper ( read:contract ), that no matter what happens, you have to stick with the band and if you do leave, you should be absolutely silent about all that happened within the band..?

Am I making sense....?

Yes,you are. But that is only good if you leave BEFORE you start faking shows. Not AFTER.

Whatever..the legacy, the contract. Fuck all that. I wanna know would a singer in his/her rite mind that had ne self respect do this.

I used to sing. I would not of done this. I would know that if caught it would be over 4 me. My voice was my instrument. I would of said no way Jose. I would of walked away. Called a lawyer. Nething but use tapes & role play a singer. I like role playing games trust me. I play them all the time. But this 1 game I would not have played.

Have sung in a few bands, i would crap my self that someone would notice if i was lipping.Though it seems WASP and House of Lords dont have those worries regarding tapes. In the music scene the whole Journey lipping thing has brought attention to the use of tapes this may make some bands cautious of using them(i hope). I think they shopuld be asked flat out if they are inteviewed if they use tapes as people want to know if this is the kind of show they want to pay money to see!!!
Going back to your question in a small band never, not only for my own pride but it would not feel right,as a singer you are generally expected to sing!!!
In this case of Steve A maybe managment (who they are changing?) said we dont want a change in the band now dont worry use tapes.Steve probably had no choice, can you imagine how it must have felt for him up there lipping songs, constantly worrying if any one would notice or if the tape would stop,or what if i drop my microphone etc.The stress of that would make him ill enough, then a guy called Deano comes along and its all over for Steve.I have said this time and time again he deserved a lot better than this, remember he knows that people know what he did and that must play on his mind a lot.The band/management made a dumb stupid call with the tapes and Steve is left looking stupid.Journey will move on with Jeff and Steve is left behind as the guy who mimed vocals and could not replace Perry, this has undermined everything this poor guy set out to achive when taking over the vocal spot......tragic

Thats the bit i dont understand, could be money, maybe they said we will do this untill your voice gets better.I am not sure to be honest with you and this seems to be one of the puzzling things with all that has happened.I wish he had said no as this has pissed me off more than anything i can remember regarding bands.I would imagine that Steve wished he had said no as well!

Nope.

I have 2 words for you, and I mentioned this last month during the whole LipGate thing:

Artistic Integrity.

Me too, Nora. Nothing - not the best gig, not the chance for fame and fortune, nada are worth losing your artistic integrity, and your self respect along with it!

Singer here... It's a TON of pressure... I can actually see why it might've happened. Especially when MANY MANY other singers are using this approach. (M Jackson, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Steven Tyler, Simpson, and more.) Doesn't make it right, but I can totally see how it could happen and I sympathize with Augeri. I know that it's something he wouldn't willingly go into. He'd be seen as the guy who let the band down and they'd kick him out. Maybe they figured nobody'd notice and then things could get handled the right way. But they got caught.

However, being me and with my voice, I KNOW I wouldn't hold up for that kind of touring. My voice has reacted the same way since I was a kid and I'm 43 now. I know my limitations, 2 days gigging, rest 2-3 days. Being asked to be Journey's (or any other major touring band's singer) would be like handing me a plate of 100,000.00 then telling me that I can't touch it because it's contaminated with some kind of deadly virus!! As much as I'd want to do it, I KNOW my voice wouldn't take it.

Journey was going to Europe for the first time in years and the band NEEDED to go. I don't believe this has been going on for years as others have put out there. I think that it probably went on during the Euro tour and afterward. It really bums me out that it happened but, to me, it's not the end of the world and I don't think the guy should be held up as the anti christ. I know Steve was out there doing everything he could to get his voice in shape and regain it. If he wasn't singing at all, why all the warm ups? Why the steamy dressing rooms? etc. I do think he was probably singing along with a tape. I don't think he was just NOT singing. Many bands use guide vocal tracks live.

SO much of what we hear out there is tracked. Jees, in local clubs here, there are two bands that use a ton of tracks in their shows. Background vocals, lead vocals, guitar parts, keyboard parts, and even though it's widely known, these bands get all the major gigs and get top dollar. They're entertaining as hell, but it's not all live. It frustrates me because I know my own band is a good band and we sing everything. We DO track keyboards because our friggin' agent and the friggin' clubs ain't going to get us more money to pay a fifth guy. It's not the end of the world.

Tracking is cheating, period. Whether vocals, guitars or keys, it's all cheesy. Karoake band.

We choose to have keyboards in our band, so guess what - we all took a pay cut and hired a keyboardist.
If we chose not to take the pay cut, then we would choose songs without keyboards.

Bands in my area who use added tracks get zero respect and they seem to have a hard time finding gigs.

Most folks don't care if the band uses some backing tracks for some stuff, like the keyboard in "Chain Reaction", or even some backing vocals. For myself, using tracks for Jon's keys when he's playing rhythm guitar doesn't bother me. Using tracks for the backing vocals does. That should be live, in my opinion, warts and all.
