Yeah, all the Loons love that album.

Yes. We do. :)

What's the favourite album amongst the SchonLoons?

Here's the way I see it (these are counting the bonus tracks on other releases)...

Raised on Radio = 4 ballads, 3 rock tunes, and 4 pop/rock
Trial By Fire = 8 ballads, 5 rock tunes, and 3 pop/rock
Arrival = 7 ballads, 4 rock tunes, and 5 pop/rock

It's beyond me how anyone can claim that Augeri's thin, vibeless voice on Arrival compares in any way to the majesty of Perry's performance on ROR. I agree that Augeri's voice sounds thin in comparison to Perry's but whose voice wouldn't? There are few that can match Perry even from the ROR era.

Are you counting "It's Just The Rain" and "TBF" as ballads?

They're slow songs - but they're not conventional ballads in the way that, say, "When You Love A Woman" is...so I think they ought to be disqualified from the TBF v Arrival ballad count. :)

What's your take on Schon's smooth jazz instrumentals of pop songs like "Hero"? These records make ROR sound like death metal.

True, but he didn't call it Journey.

Some of it I like, some I don't. My favorite solo CDs are Late Nite and Beyond the Thunder.

I know, but they're still slow songs, hence they are included in the ballad column. The real comparison is between slow songs and rockers.

"Beyond the Thunder" gets far more spins than any of his other solo stuff at my house. "I on U" is the best since BTT, in my opinion. I would like "Pirannha Blues" a lot better if it had a different singer.

Well, if anyone thinks Perry was entirely to 'blame' for the ROR album this clip shows that Cain and Schon can pussy it up with the best of them:

"Raised on Radio" was a Journey album. "Beyond the Thunder" is a Neal Schon solo album, which is basically smooth jazz. If Neal had included that song on a Journey album, you would be correct.

BTW, that is my favorite Neal solo tune.

Wow I forgot about that...saw that a few years ago.

Y'know, as much as Neal gets on my nerves with his "shoot first, as questions later" style of..um..communicating....NO ONE ELSE comes CLOSE to the TONE he gets! You automatically KNOW it's Neal Schon. It really is like a human voice: clarity and vibrato.

I like to challenge myself by singing along with his guitar solos - especially the instrumental on the "Time3" set.

....tamed the 'fro a bit.......what year did this come out? Early 90s?

I watched the Director's Cut of the BTM last night. Perry said he felt a kinship with Neal's guitar playing.

Yuck. That album is good for ... well, you know
Sounds like I'm in the dentist chair and they're giving me nitrous.
It's funny to watch Cain in that video. What is it about guys that when they play jazzier stuff, they get all
'into' their instrument like that? Looks stupid.

The best solo album by Neal is Late Night. That album was the Shiz! He doesn't wimp out on his guitar sound and it's got "I'll Cover You" on it. Dang, that's a killer song.

That song might sound okay in a lobby or maybe by the pool in a Hilton...but on a record you actually have to pay money for? I'll stick to "Be Good To Yourself" if that's okay.

Come on, you tellin' me you didn't like "The Tails"??? And I don't care how GAY it looked, Perry's "Mic-Cord" Shuffle is classic!!! That was the best part of the WYLAW video in 96; seeing Perry do that one more time while Neal shredded!

In Journey? No. Not cool. As a solo artist? Definitely.

I like tons of different kinds of music, especially if it's got good guitar playing. "Beyond the Thunder" has that. There's lots of different kinds of music to appreciate that kind of stuff from.

Personally, I think Perry and Neal looked the best on that tour. Neal in a leather coat looked cool. Perry looked great. No spandex pants, no mustache. On the album, he looked like a dork, but on stage, he looked great. Perry looked the worst on Frontiers with the Mustache. Yuck! Oh wait, I'm a guy, why am I even commenting here?!?!? holy shit! Cain, on the other hand, usually looks dumb to me.

Randy Jackson and Michael Baird??? Who the F cares about them? They suck (or baired did- Randy actually played better bass than Ross in my opinion. But he looked stupid! DAWG!).
