Oh yeah...forgot to mention:

The Tenor Vocal Range is THE MOST DIFFICULT RANGE TO MASTER....

...and he makes it look as easy as breathing.

I think steve is a VERY deep person. He is not just a singer, he is an ARTIST, his emotion
and passion are wore on his sleeve for all to see when he performs, to read when he writes,
to hear when he sings. Listen to some of these early boots, he didnt just hit notes from
a recording , he would take them higher, and you could tell it was effortless, he was one of
a kind , just an amazing talent with extreme control and range, its no wonder women loved
him and men admired him.........

It's just a helpless feeling that you get when you hear his voice and it's more intense if you're watching his face at the same time. Never has the word "Soul" had more meaning, especially if you can relate to the lyrics of the song.

Phil Niekro was a knuckleballer who lived off loading the ball up with FOREIGN MATTER; ie, vaseline, nail files, KY Jelly, you name it. He was a cheater, plain and simple.

Nice comparison. I am amazed you even went there.

13, hate to let you down but I can't come up with a thing, not even a smart remark. I can't account for the tastes of some women...I just don't get it at all, guess I'd have to be a woman to understand it. But my wife doesn't think Perry's sexy and I'm wondering if she's the only hardcore Journey female fan that doesn't think so. I always thought his stage presence was, well goofy. I can't believe I even read this thread to find your question.
But since I did, I'm wondering whether the ladies here generally like more manly men, or if Perry is indicative of their usual taste in men.

Well speaking solely for myself, my husband and Steve Perry have absolutely zilch in common physically. My dh is tall (probably close to a foot taller than SP) and has super short hair. But yet I find both of them sexy, just in different ways.

I am oddly attracted to men who aren't the standard "pretty boy" types like SP, Kevin Spacey, Joaquin Phoenix, Tommy Lee (blech did I just say that?).

I find SP attractive physically but I also love his voice. When I first heard him sing, I had no clue what he looked like or even who it was that was singing. I just knew I had to find out who it was and buy whatever music I could find.

Well alright then, bruthah.... 8)

OK...I'm in the process of uploading this thing right now...from the "Elijah" Performance that I was a part of....you will be hearing one of the featured Soprano Soloists.

Unfortunately, I don't know how to shut her up....I thought I had it "spliced" to 30 seconds, but the thing is uploading all 5 minutes....

Believe you me...you won't be offending me if you shut it down after TEN seconds....

Still waiting....

You know, I have never been able to to even understand why I am so "attracted" to Perry. I have been accused of being "gay" for him (LOL) - heck, maybe there is something that I don't know about myself - just kidding!!!!

However.... There is something about that 81 concert dvd. That long black hair, the black tailed jacket, the leopard shirt, the jeans, the sneakers. I know I keep saying it, but that might as well have been a SuperHero costume. That was the EPITOMY (or is it epitamy?) of Steve Perry.

Oh yeah, he could sing too  .

Perry had IT. I don't know what it was, but it was centered around that voice of his. Think about when he was in high school and he realized what he could do with those vocal cords. The man knew he had it. Heck, Alien Project would have probably done as well as Journey - judging by "If You Need Me, Call Me" - had Herbie taken the reigns.

Perry was born to be a star, and he confidently (over-confidently at times) loved every minute of that fame.

Until he burned out, that is.

OK...I listened to the whole thing.

I've heard worse but if I were to play an example to someone of what I hate about opera, THAT would be it.

Actually, when the singing started, my cat came out from under the desk with his eyes wide open and his ears perked up. It was like "What the heck is THAT and where is it coming from???"

Its just for some reason at the age of 10, Journey's music trapped me while all my freinds were raving about Zepp, the Doors, joining the KISS Army... Those little fuckers even made fun of me!!!

Perry seems to be indicative of their usual taste in men, but I'd love to know what their husbands think. Maybe they're wondering about the lack of attention. Just consider the following two comments:

His movement's...at time's just that subtle sway of his hip's, back and forth...I was lucky enough to be there, in front of the stage...Steve singing...hip's gently swaying....he turned....our eye's meet...he held them to me....I felt our spirit's connect....a brief moment in time...never to be forgotten...........whew it's getting hot in here!!!!

It's the emotion that Perry conveyed through his music that touched people. It was like the magic of Elvis - but with a better voice and band. Perry had charisma galore. His music grips your heart and keeps you glued to the song. My wife and I are both avid Journey/Perry fans. We've seen Augeri a few times, but there is no substitute for Steve Perry. He was one of a kind. They broke the mold afterwards.

Oh I love almost all of this thread & I thank all those who put heartfelt words out there. Nice to see some people post who don't post much. To those who tried to ruin my thread, get a life. The thread is about what Perry made people feel like. TVL was merely expressing that & it was amazing what she said.

Deano, u kept it cool here so far, TY. Please don't go there. This is kinda precious. (Oh man, I sound like a BTer here! Sorry).

I have to respond to a few people who touched me w/this (damn did I have too much wine tonite. I'm getting sappy.)

Nora, I think ur cool as hell but I don't do opera, forgive me, ok? But I love the skater comparison. U got it right there. Ur husband looks like Perry? I need better pix of him :) Can't tell much from that drum pic in ur sig. Lucky girl.
TVL u got me excited. WOW. Amazing. U got it ALL right there. WOW again. U might want to right romance novels actually if u could think of Perry & write the love scenes like this. Damn girl!
Knox how cool for a guy to be so honest. Really appreciate that.
Chickpea apart from Tommy Lee I like the other men too. I just like men who are well-unique. I don't like pretty in men.
NoMoreTails NO. I go for very tall men like 6'1" or over and usually 6'2" 6'3" or 6'4" but I've dated at guy who was 6'5". I'm short so that's weird. I don't feel attracted to guys based on looks. I don't like feminine men. I never saw Perry as feminine. I don't get why people say that. He was all man to me. He was shorter than I like and slight but still manly. Augeri was more girly to me than Perry. JSS is even more manly. I find him very attractive too.
RPM thank u. Short & sweet u said it.
Jabber yep a goofy dance is sexy. Perry did it & well. The Boss did it. Heck isn't that what won AI for Taylor Hicks. Don't get me started. That guy looked spastic. But he danced anyway. People liked it. Who needs a wiggle when u have confidence. Heart & soul.
Kathy yes. U never forget Perry.
Eighty u got it too. And I agree JSS has a good dose of it.
HOTS YES. Soul. They compare him to Sam Cooke. I think he's better.
Voyager yes Elvis. He wasn't like Elvis. But they had something along the same lines. Just a magnetism. I met someone who met fat Elvis & they said they would never forget him. Even fat he had sex appeal. Not just sex appeal but "something" u can't put ur finger on.

Great thread. U guys are the best! TYVM for all of this. Keep it going.

I think many of the descriptions here are right on. He is the one of the most soulful intense singers ever, a hard rock crooner. And as far as the physique goes, its the no-so-tall, dark handsome stranger thing  I remember when I first saw and heard him, when I was very young. It was in the video to We are the World. I remember thinking "Wow, what a good looking Native American and jeehez can he sing!". Many years passed before I heard him again in Journey (Wheel in the Sky was the first Journey song I heard), but I never forgot him. He just has it.

I understand most of what Yak is saying with regard to others' admiration of Steve Perry. Espee himself has stated he has felt uneasy with the idolization of him; with the undying infatuation and "drooling" over him. I think he is very uncomfortable with it. I believe he wonders how so many women have found so much to love about him when he realizes he has been a jerk, arogant prick, selfish lover, cruel, etc. People love the voice; not necessarily loving or being "in love" with this man they do not know. I think he feels that when people look at him and admire what they see and hear; they forget that there is also a person there behind the voice and that this stage persona is not necessarily him. When you scratch below the surface; you'd find just a man with most attributes he can share with most of the male population. He's who he is and I think he'd like not to be on a pedestal but just be a guy who can sing with the angels and has the vices and characteristics of the guy next door.
