Perry's appeal-help me describe it

My dearest friend is a tenor and has been singing for the last 27 years. His band use to front Steppenwolf many years ago. I asked him about keeping his voice sounding good (though I actually know what he does) and he pretty much said it's because he didn't tour like most bands do. As much as he sings and as healthy as he keeps himself, I've still seen him lose his voice and sounds as some may say 'raspy' at times. By the way, he's been taking voice lessons for longer than the 10 years I've known him. According to him, everyone is different. He laughs quite a bit when he reads these forums but never explains why. I can only guess...

Because the male speaking voice is usually low...and you are forcing it to sing in a range that's higher.

I understand most of what Yak is saying with regard to others' admiration of Steve Perry. Espee himself has stated he has felt uneasy with the idolization of him; with the undying infatuation and "drooling" over him. I think he is very uncomfortable with it. I believe he wonders how so many women have found so much to love about him when he realizes he has been a jerk, arogant prick, selfish lover, cruel, etc. People love the voice; not necessarily loving or being "in love" with this man they do not know. I think he feels that when people look at him and admire what they see and hear; they forget that there is also a person there behind the voice and that this stage persona is not necessarily him. When you scratch below the surface; you'd find just a man with most attributes he can share with most of the male population. He's who he is and I think he'd like not to be on a pedestal but just be a guy who can sing with the angels and has the vices and characteristics of the guy next door.

.I agree with what your saying here.....I, for one, was just stating his appeal to me in a fun way...not in "love" with the man...don't know him...could be an asshole, for all I know....just was a "surface" appeal!

I guess that since I am a singer myself, I appreciate Steve in a different way, other than being attractive...that's why I answered the initial question here in a "numeric list" - looking objectively at his performances ONLY, answering in an "analytic" manner, and staying on-topic.

Yes, he IS attractive, and the way he performs is outstanding...and yes I will get emotional when his music affects me; I'm not ashamed to admit it - and I will get "goofy" at times about his appeal, but I don't let it get too "carried away"....it's usually followed by a "LOL" or a ":wink:"

The part of your post that I underlined reminded me of a quote made by Rita Hayworth:

As for me attacking Voicelover......As you know, it was the other way around......You arrived on your high horse and called me a jerk for something. So, I just responded in kind. As for reading my back posts, I have to say I'm rather flattered that somebody has so much time on their hands, and would choose to spend it on me.

I have already stated here that I am not female....not a Loon, not a former Loon, not a Wish-I-Had-Been-A-Loon, and not a Loon-in-Waiting. I have been called NC, Arden (Huge insult there), and others; being called a broad is a first for me. But, hey, knock yourselves out accusing people you don't know, of being something they're not. Whatever gets you through your day......



I am privy to private information, which the others know about; information they never thought would leave their hallowed halls. They pretend to be oblivious to the facts, by trotting in here and "acting" shocked and self righteous about what's been said.

Perry would be mortified if he really knew how these "fans" go behind closed doors to fantasize about him being the bar of sandalwood and musk soap in their shower. Figure the rest out for yourselves. Imagine this scenario to be a play, with each loon participating as a character, and you'll get the picture. Then they come to MR, acting as if they're fairly civilized Perry fans, and attempt to befriend the other posters here, after they've cut down these very same people (including Andrew and "The Crock") on their private board.

Suffice it to say that they have an agenda. I usually read these posts when I want a good laugh. I have to respond sometimes simply because of the sheer insanity of it all.

I never saw this much Perry talk on the former SP board that Andrew was kind enough to give Perry fans. You had a place to go where you could talk about your beloved and nobody would bother you, but you were always on the Journey board stirring up trouble. So the SP board was shut down and here you all are, wanting to talk about your portuguese god, and when somebody disagrees with you, you get mad like children. Maybe if you had kept the other board half this active, it would still be going.

It's no small wonder Perry hides out.

That's one of the reasons I'm so amazed at a guy like Geoff Tate. He has such a low speaking voice and, back in the early days anyway, he was able to get up there and almost shatter glass (see "Queen of the Reich" or "Take Hold of the Flame"...WOW!!!). He still sounds incredible on the low stuff and doesn't really sound like anyone else that I can think of.

I learned how to sing in head voice, though I didn't realize it at the time, by listening to guys like him, Perry, Brad Delp, Steve Walsh, Lou Gramm, etc., and by emulating their style. I'm not saying I sound all that great, but I can do it...to a degree.

Wow! Didn't know that. He probably could've done the job for awhile considering Boston didn't release anything between "Don't Look Back" ('78) and "Third Stage" ('86).

Yeah, some of those notes, particularly in "More Than a Feeling" were pretty up there for a guy. The harmonies on those first two Boston albums were amazing.

Delp can't hit them anymore, though, and Fran Cosmo is the guy who takes all those high notes now, ala Deen with Journey. I don't quite like the tone of his voice compared to Delp's but he certainly helps out on the high stuff and harmonies. I saw them in summer '04 and the harmonies were nearly as good as the record (they appeared to be ALL live from what I could tell). They had five guitar players on stage as well! Of course, with the Boston guitar sound, you kinda need that many.

There are few that can equal the emotion that Perry puts into his vocals. What was it that Cain said about Perry's singing? Something like "Every time Steve sang, he would bleed a little"? Almost like he was giving it his all and leaving a little bit of himself out on the stage. That's what it's about.

Delp can do it as well, but Boston's stuff didn't lend itself as well to that.

Brad in his prime could have easily done the journey songs (high note wise)
Perry had nothing on him there, but they are two different souls and it comes
thru in the voice, Delp is not the troubled soul Perry is, its part of what made
Perry such a great writer and express it thru his music, Delp is just a Great singer
whos lived a pretty happy life..

He also has said in interviews in the past that when he was in the studio, he did tracks again and again - he said he sang everything until when he heard the playback - he absolutely believed everything he sang.

Obviously, a lot of us believed in everything he sang - and still today, the man could stand on the corner and sing the telephone directory and I would believe everyword.

Let's see...I only heard a voice in 1978 that grabbed me like no other right out of the blue - I didn't know who it was or what he looked like, but what he sang touched something inside of me (I wasn't even into music) and I HAD to find out who this was. Then, I saw! He exuded a sexy sincerity, had a commanding, charismatic presence...he cast a spell.

It wasn't until I forgot & then found him again in recent years that I realized he is clearly at the top of some of the greatest singers/performers.

So he has problems or insecurities just like the rest of us humans - he also has shown to have charity & kindness. What makes me stop & think is that here is an ordinary human being from a humble cow town who was gifted with an incredible talent to touch MILLIONS of lives for the better & it is still ongoing!!! WOW!

I too first heard Perry before seeing him. THE VOICE! Interesting, this question, because I heard Faithfully in the car yesterday. To this day you still just sit there shaking your head getting chills going WOW!
It's the way he dilivered his voice, maybe even more so than the way he delivered the songs, and there is a difference if you think about it.
