Fuck, I forgot Jay Graydon..!

Larry, Luke was basically the ace session guitarist in LA that 'took over' from Graydon after the decided to cool off the session scene circa very late 70's...Luke then passed it over to Landau after he decided to ease off the session circuit circa mid 80's....

I like Neal (of course), Eddie, Brad Gillis, Randy Jackson (of Zebra), Richie Sambora, Yngwie, Randy Rhodes (such a shame we lost him - my guitar teacher would cry whenever we discussed him - she loved him). I also appreciate the others people are mentioning, but these are the players whose music I like the most.

Knox - I'm with you all the way! Trevor Rabin is a spectacular talent. Such a shame he spends his time composing movie soundtracks now...and that so many Yes fans don't appreciate his genius.

Other guitarists:

Michael Schenker - between 1974-1980 - unbelievable guitarist back then.

Schon...obviously...

Ace Frehley - not the best technically - but he delivered so many classic solos.

Stephen Stills - the man who blew Neil Young away a hundred times over in CSNY guitar 'duels'....

Kirk Hammet - let's hope Metallica will abandon the idiotic 'no solos' rule on the new Rick Rubin produced album.

David Gilmour - the Steve Perry of Pink Floyd! He rescued a band that had lost its direction....took it to the top...and came to dominate the group with his sheer brilliance. Back off Waters!

Eddie was also doing it years before anyone ever heard him on the first VH album. Regardless, Eddie is certainly the one who made it his own and took it to another level.

I agree, that little magic was made huge by Eddie! 8)
However!
A few years ago,I was watching a Disney old cartoon with Mickey Mouse and all of a sudden he starts playing the guitar and at one point he is tapping the same way Eddie does!!
I swear to God! I was in deep shock and I couldn't wait for the cartoon to be over just to see the year it was out:1952!!

Can't remember the name of the cartoon, nor the name of its creator, although I read it on the screen then....Just the year.

Yeah, Eddie was during it in the clubs in the 70's, but even he once admitted that he copped it from Frank Marino of Mahogany Rush (Any Canadians out there?) But good point- he's definitely the guy the took it and made it his own. I do think, though, that lots of rock guitarests of the last 30 years owe a huge debt to Ace. He does have a ton of memorable solos, some that have just been down right copied over the years (For instance , Mike McCready's solo in ALIVE? Pretty much Ace's SHE solo from KISS ALIVE)
Some awesome guys on everyone's lists. Any gals? I always liked Nancy Wilson...

That may be an urban legend, but who knows. I believe I read an interview with him where he said he remembered seeing Jimmy Page doing a pull-off on one of his licks and getting the two-handed tapping idea from that.

Ugghhh! Kinda undermines my cred when I spell guitarist with an "e", doesn't it?
Oh well...all part of my theory that as your kids gets smarter, you get dumber!
And Moonbeam, I think John M. is a kick ass guitarIst....his JM trio is really good stuff.
BTW- How the hell did I leave Stevie Ray off my list? Dumb, dumb, and dumber!

Here are my favorites. In no particular order. I've notated the reasons I've picked them next to them.

ERIC JOHNSON - great tone, takes Jimi's work forward 10 steps, fantastic soloing, good songwriter
RANDY RHOADS - great soloing, great songwriter
GARY MOORE - every solo is awesome (technical/feeling), great songwriter (from ballads, to blues, to metal)
TOM SCHOLZ - great songwriter, great producer, good soloist
BRIAN MAY - great songwriter, great soloist (his "guitar army" overdubs show him to be the best at it)
NEIL SCHON - great songwriter, great melodic soloist, has vibrant energy that rubs off on you
JIMI HENDRIX - great songwriter, guitar pioneer, complex yet full of feeling
SRV - great soloist, great tone, took Jimi to the next step
KEE MARCELLO - awesome soloist, personal favorite
JOE SATRIANI - great soloist, good songwriter, established the popularity of the guitar instrumental for the masses
