What the hell happened here??? Come on, lighten up. Time to rent The Ringer and laugh at life rather than be so damned serious.

I appreciate that but I'm not offended. You've only offended yourself - your own heart. Your response to Matthew appears to have nullified your apology, anyway.

If you've never used "nigger" it's because your heart tells you that it's wrong. If you were to use it then your heart would suffer.

The cheesey, smart-ass response to "moron" has always been, "Better to be more-on than off." As lame as that is I'm not so sure "moron" will give you the results you're looking for.

Insulting someone's intelligence isn't very effective. You've got to target their most fundamental nature and lay waste to it. I'm sure you'll think of something clever. I'm a BTer so feel free to use me as a sounding board!

Regarding this claim. No one here referred to the mega-burger eating "black guy" as a "nigger." Why not if "we are not P.C. here?"

No one uses that term in social circles because it's NOT P.C. It's offensive and degrading. Society has evolved to recognize this unfortunately the same isn't true for the mentally retarded.

So when you say "We are not P.C. here." - think again! We ARE! At least regarding some things. It's too bad that the weak and defenseless are targeted.

Well, no-one apart from virtually every black hip-hop act. The word "nigger" is used routinely. So I reckon it isn't the word itself that is offensive - it's the spirit of the remark and its context. Calling the blob from Weird Science "retarded" hardly constitutes an attack on "the weak and defenceless"...the spirit of the remark was light-hearted.

The trouble with most PC types is that they patronize and infantilize the people they are trying to 'protect'. Although they don't belong to the 'minority' in question, they are quick to judge what is or isn't 'offensive' and 'degrading' to that minority. It's just so arrogant and humourless...

So you might be PC. But I wouyldn't assume you are speaking on behalf of everyone on this board.

You're trivializing the importance of the function of Political Correctedness - if that's even a proper term. For myself I've never considered showing respect to other human beings as something that requires some political mechanism but rather nothing more than a compassionate heart!

"Nigger" used to be VERY common and loosely used. Then it evolved into a hate word and now has been acknowledged as such and considered inapproriate. Within the Black Community "nigger" isn't used rather "niggah" is and it carries a completely different conotation.

Having said that I'm NOT "PC" but rather a COMPASSIONATE HUMAN BEING. So it's not about arrogance or lack of humor - it's about RESPECT.

I'm referring to the use of the term "retarded" that was applied to people at BT in this thread. Yes - I understand the spirit of the remark was meant to be funny but at the same time I also sense a tone of disrespectfulness in that "humor."

In my Ugly Betty thread I used "moron" in the poll. The definition of moron is "a mildly retarded person" OR "a stupid person." In the spirit of my usage I certainly wasn't referencing or comparing anything with a mentally retarded person. It's clear what my intentions were but the intentions of this thread are not so clear. In fact, the responses to my rant indicate that humor really wasn't the intent. The intent appears to be to insult others by comparing them to or placing them in the category of being mentally retarded.

BTW: I speak for those who have no voice - the mentally retarded. I'm the parent of a special needs child and prior to his birth I actively spoke up against this type of "humor." Since his birth I have an even larger voice.

Yes, you wrote an answer in the poll which read: "No. JOURNEY is a rock band, moron!" In this context it was a light-hearted term of abuse. Exactly the same spirit in which the term "retarded" was used toward BT.

Did your use of "moron" 'reference' a mentally retarded person? Yes - because the definition of "moron" means - as you point out - "mildly retarded person".

It seems to me that you have a double-standard on this issue. One set of rules for you. And another for everyone else.

BTW: My mother is a life-long sufferer of schizophrenia. And I feel huge compassion towards her. But I couldn't care less when someone attacks me for being a "PerryLoon" - even though the word "loon" is disrespectful to mentally ill people - and I'm certainly not going to scold anyone or police other people's posts.

Frankly, the vocabulary people use on a Journey messageboard is the least of my worries - and if someone makes me laugh - even if it's about a serious or worthy subject - then I'm always grateful.

No double-standard. "Moron" has 2 definitions as I noted above.

Yes - "a stupid person" and "a mildly retarded person". Either way, "moron" is hardly a term of respect to people with impaired, damaged or limited intelligence. Where do you draw the line, Fyre? How badly disabled does someone need to be before they are worthy of your attempts to rebuke and moralise? Are the merely stupid good for a laugh?

Susie you're right I did apologize but I then acted like a stupid kid and posted a few more silly remarks (I'd had a shit day at work I guess). Mathew is right when he states the word 'R' was only used lightly...it was never my intention to take the piss out of special needs, at the time it just seemed like a good word to get the message over in the postcard.
Fyre, incidently are you a bter? Just wondering, that's all.

I agree
The thread is or was about Deano's Avatar....
It was fun til it got hijacked by morality & social issues
Now that has it's place in our society
but animated humor takes us to the edge
where we can laugh with ourselves
maybe even see something in a different light.
that's why it's funny.
What pains me is the useless banter that only serves to bury good issues in tons of negative emotion.
Social awareness does not come from angry bickering.
As soon as you put a person on attack
you have lost any chance of reaching them through reason.
You can't gain anything when a person is put in defense mode unless of course you are just out to hurt
What makes life better is to promote the positive.

The problem with this world is that it is backwards
We have this cave mentality that the way to teach is to affect negative disapline...
We would be much more effective if we adopted postive reinforcement
Teach by example
practice what we preach
if not we are just hypocrites.
I wish it was that easy
but I am afraid it is not.
I guess we can't lose sight of evil.
Those oportunistic lifeforms
waiting to find our weakness
and to use it to take advantage of us.

Tis the world we live in
so I am just thinking it would be better to excentuate the positive
Rise above it all
rather than dwell in the abyss of man made dispair

Where would this world be without humor
let's not try to debate every idiocyncracy
Let's not feed negative behavior.

I may have not liked the use of a jump truck to carry the Steve Perry cone
but heck lets lighten up
the world will dump enough crap on us
Let's not add to it & argue amongst ourselves in a place where we come to discuss a band dear to our hearts

This is Deano's Avatar....
If I can have love in my heart
for a undulating blob of what looks like excrement with bad teeth
then surely we can learn to coexist with each other without debating every nuance & picking on every mistake

Who invited Dr Phil, Oprah & the social trolls to the Journey forum anyway?
It's almost as if social issues are now being raised just to make arguement & disharmony.
Andrew bought extra bandwidth to make our Journey experience better
Let's not use it to feed & get lost in debates with those with there own agenda's.
Alot of the language on this forum is less than perfect
so I don't see why we are spending bandwidth debating a simple word of less than average intelligence.

when Avatar and his companions left the hospitable SusieP household, they said they were heading for Sheffield - birthplace of Def Leppard.

However, they have been gone some time, and Sheffield is only a 40 minute drive from here.
