It was a stingray, not a croc, that got him...

Stingray shock probably stopped his heart
Usually they will get you in the foot when you step on them
Maybe he was trying to ride it
I've seen pic of divers doing that.
Usually stinggray are not at all agressive
they just don't want to be stepped on and will most often just move out of the way.

Goodness with all the deadly things he has tackled
he's taken down by a stingray
Anytime you are dealing with dangerous animals
there is always a risk

That's why there was that big uproar
when he was so close to that crock with his baby under his arm.
One switch of a crocks tail could have made him lose his balance
and down they would come & it;s hard to fight off a crock with one arm around a baby.

Got to respect the other world
Still he did alot of good & it is a sad unfortunate accident

That's what I figure. The details will be in the news soon, I expect.

We catch stingrays all the time but wear gloves if we actually have to handle them (usually we don't). Don't think I've ever been swimming among them though... if I was, I'd rather remain ignorant of the fact!

I just read it on the newswire. I am so sad for his wife and children. On a personal note, my 7-year old niece watches him all the time on Animal Planet. He is her favorite one to watch. Since she was 4 or 5, she would try to say Crikey with the "appropriate" accent. I just let my sister know, so they can tell her. Telling a kid someone has passed is hard....

I'm shocked and saddened by this news this morning. Of all the deadly crocs, snakes, spiders...etc that he has toyed with its bizarre that a stingray was the animal which got him.

His poor family.

Yeah, I heard about that...what a shame. I had no idea sting rays were dangerous, though the name does sound like something to steer clear of (duh?!?!). I guess the thing pierced his heart.....damn

OMG!! Is all i can say i so enjoyed his show.My heart goses out to his family..... he cared so much & loved what he was doing.My thoughts and prayers will be for his many friends & family at this sad time.

I've always loved watching his shows and I'm very sad to hear of his death.

Despite his daring, I never though anything would ever happen to him or Terri -- they seem so in-tune with animals ...

My heart goes out to his wife Terri and their two children.

He will be missed ...

Most of the money went back into their zoo and conservation. They even live at the zoo/wildlife place.

WOW! I got online to check emails, and this was the story that made me read it, even before my emails. I remember the first time I saw Steve on the Animal Planet. I thoguhts he was abnoxious but fun to watch, and obviously he inspired quite a few people to do the same sort of thing, judging by all the knock-offs that appeared after he was on TV.

I always get a laugh when I imitate or even thinkg of Steve saying... "I've been wrastlin' Crocks, since I was knee high to a dingo...". Steve will forever live on in the minds and hearts of countless people and especially children that he taught so much too. Leaving behind a beautiful little Daughter and Wife, I will have them in my thoughts and prayers, as well as Steve's great memories.

Really sad about Steve. I've often wondered if he took too many chances.

According to the paper this morning, he was swimming above a stringray and simply got too close. The barb went through his rib and literally punctured his heart. The paper also stated that even though stringray "stings" can be severely painful, they rarely cause death. Had it missed his heart, he probably would have lived. Talk about a freak accident.

Watching an update on CNN right now....surreal...

They said that the whole ordeal was actually caught on tape for a documentary, which was immediately turned over to the Police.

They also said that Steve Irwin was only the third person to die from a Stingray attack...

I heard all the things saying how rare it is to die from a stingray attack (never mind that the attacks are rare to begin with)- I didn't realize he was only the 3rd. Wow. I guess when it's your time, it's your time. :cry:

Somehow feel like I have lost a friend. My thoughts really go to his poor wife, they were so in love.

If there is a Heaven, Steve surely is in it, what a difference he made for nature awareness. Rest in peace.

Just watched Today Show interviews about Irwin. If that stingray's barb had not hit his heart, he probably would have lived. An unbelievable stroke of bad luck.

You're right. And it's incredible that a man who has laughed obvious danger in the face so many times should die in such a freak accident.

I have seen countless of his shows on Animal Planet, and he really broadened my knowledge of nature and removed a lot of my prejudices surrounding dangerous animals.
