not the starter not the battery
thing is it cut out while in operation and that is a bit odd so I would say it wasn;t flooded
that's at start up..

Hey M
That stuff is like rocket fuel my guess sticky gummy worn carb
I used to have trouble with my TA but she would sit for a year in the garage and
then she was a bitch to start
had to charge batteries & sometimes prime carb or turn the engine
My fault you can;t let a car sit fot that long
its not good
but that car had heart & we;'d get her to start
let her engine luxuraiate in 20W oil and suck up all the gas she could
She got about about 8 mpg with her 400 RAIII 10:1 compression ratio
She roared!
Loved that car
My first and last muscle car
Had her almost 20 years but due to finances had to sell her a few years ago...

still I'd say something with fuel line, punp, sensors & hopefully it won;t be $
Could it have been heat related?
check spark plug wires PS not while engine is on oooh guess that's the problem but be careful
just check all the boots are tight...still one off might just rough idle
check radiator level good to check all fluids
any low fluids are not good but if she really heated up engine could seize

no noise just cut?
if it was fuel probably would have gagged a bit
a dead stop might be more electircal

Sorry. I hate these things but could be a wire or something?
What do you thing care guys?

I think it's electrical, unless the engine is fried.

Check the obvious first: battery terminals. A lot of times they'll vibrate loose and lose contact. If positive is loose, car can shut off. Same with ground cable, alternator wires or belt. It's probably not getting juice from somewhere and wires/belts are the easiest to check. Spark plugs/wires/distributor cap too. One of our trucks kept shutting off for seemingly no reason and it was just a dirty distributor contact.

Hope it's something simple!

Get bike. Inexpensive. Great exercise. Gets you where you have to go. Fun. And, get those little baskets on the back and you'll be all set.

My bike needs work too
Tires are flat
slow leaks
Shes got mega miles on her and really could use a tune up
So I walk rather than pay 50 cents to get air all the time

Battery is only needed to start the car
If it cut in operation then it would be more alternator or other electrical
It;s good to start w battery but don;t think that's the problem
If it;s cranking starter motor is ok
Hey it's good to try to think it thru
I am not an expert but I have been around cars and mechanics since I was a little girl

I do have baskets on the back, Marabelle. I always think ahead on things like that. I just have to be careful of the heat here because my medication makes my internal temperature regulator go wacky. I don't want to pass out on the side of the road ! ( and I do have a helmet too ! ). :D

Well damn...then go for the motorized bike. Cheaper. Fuel efficient and fun. I wouldn't invest in a car unless I had no other choice. Good luck Sallee!

That's a serious concern
It was 100 here today
Luckily CA has a ride all bus and train as much as you want within the city for a $3 all day pass
Hey for less than the price of a gal of gas
it;s a sin not to use it

Hope you figure something out
but watch the health
that's $ too and not easily fixed

Thing is wouldn;t it start then cut out if the alternator was bad?

Sorry, just tired. I did mention the alternator but failed to mention the connection between alternator and battery cables. Thanks for clarifying.

We work on our own cars usually; I promise I'm a lot smarter than I sound!

Hey, we learn everyday
I watched my uncle fix his car when I was 8
and my dad and my brothers were always fixing there own

You can save some money on little jobs

My brother put a 160 thermo in my trans am
she had run hot when I got her
I picked up a 160 thinking it would be ok
It worked
Maybe there old thermo was bad
usually 160 may be a bit low
but this was a big engine
running unleaded fuel on heads that were meant for lead gas
So I added a lead substitute most of the time
and we tweaked her

It seems with each problem
you learn a bit more

Heck my father has a yute in Australia
4 wheel drive diesel that has a similar problem
engine cuts out
and they can't seem to find the nature of the problem

I like working on cars
though most of the stuff I have done on my own is more body work or troubleshooting the easy stuff
You have to have tools for the other jobs and you end up wasting $ guessing and fixing by process of elimination
not to mention the scraped knuckles

yes if the car starts and you remove the cables and it dies most likely the alternator is bad another thing that could be looked at is the voltage regulator but usually its battery /alternator /voltge regulator within that circuit unless you have a short which is not uncommon for fords

Sal, I originally laughed about the oil thought, HOWEVER...

IF your oil pressure drops (perhaps low on oil, a typical female "quality"), then some cars will shut down to protect the motor. Having seen your car Sallee, I don't know whether or not you have that capability. You might look at your fuse box...Many cars also have ignition and other fuse related wiring.

Girl Quality?
Well, I have never wanted to be the typical girl!

I loved my oil pressure gauge as well as my voltmeter & water temp guage
No dummy gauges

those were the days

I doubt a run of the mill Ford has one
but a drop of oil pressure is more evident upon idle
You'd have to visibly lose alot of oil for that big of a drop
or bad rings burn it
but then you'd see blue smoke from exhaust

Checking fluid level is the best way to kepp your car smiling

Buse fuses are under the dash
& they are a good thing to check for signal lights or other electirical but
to stop an engine its not likely

I KNOW that, and even mentioned hat SOME cars do have ignition fuses. Mine does. All Nissan and Subarus do. I am sure others do as well.

Sorry that you had such a bad day, sweetie.

Do you know any friends/neighbors who are mechanically inclined, who could give you a heads up on what the problem is? Or at least point you in the direction of an honest mechanic?

Tommorrow will be a better day, Sallee.

It;ls stuck in some mode

its a fast mode so either foward or reverse
Too lazy to pull it from the dash
Stuck a pencil in there
gave it a wack
pushed buttons
still it;s hell bent on its ill path of frustration
but I have yet to really get serious about the problem
don't use the car much
but darn just no fun cruising to the whirl of a Volvo engine

I;ve taken a stereo cassette deck apart and fixed it
had to rig some sort of thing as a button was broken
they the teeth fell off the cogs
and I realized
it;s just too far gone and junked it
