So what could Mr. Perry be up to???

Postby Carlitto H@kk » Fri Sep 08, 2006 4:41 am

Let's take a detour from all the JSS and Augeri talk and discuss Mr. Perry, shall we?
Ok, just about everyone has seen some of the recent photos and it is obvious that Steve is slimming down, growing his hair out, making more public appearances than he has in 10-15 years... Add in rumors of him "being in a studio, working on scales" and you have the makings of some good speculating; which I am happy to say we ARE allowed to do on this site :)

So what's he up to?
I, personnally, don't think he's gonna make another run with Journey. He's made that quite clear; but then again, you can read comments from Hagar on VH from 4-5 years ago and look what happened.
I think he's gonna do something new on his own. I think he is getting hungry again and he's gonna record some new material for us soon. If he is making plans for something, I do know a good way to start getting back in the mainstream public eye: I wonder if the Fox Network has considered contacting him for their new celebrity reality show, "Celebrity Duets?" Anyone seen it? Yea, it's pretty silly (like most shows like this) but you can't deny how many people watch these shows night after night. I think Perry would be perfect to be one of the Guests for this show, dueting with one of the contestants. He could do a Journey tune, "Oh Sherrie" (his only real mainstream solo hit) or he could do an old Motown ditty ala Sam Cooke.
Hell, he should call his old friend Randy Jackson and be a guest judge on next seasons AI. It could be "Ballad Night". Who better to judge the wannabes sing ballads than "The Voice" himself???
I know, alot of gay shit getting him on reality TV... I just think Perry's up to something and want to know what everyone else thinks or knows or thinks they know...

I'm sure he was contacted for the Duets show, I'd put a TON of money on that one !!! Dennis DeYoung is going to be on there :)

I'm sure Steve's been contacted for a lot of shows, wasn't he was the first choice for that show that Tommy Lee went back to school or something like that?

I think the "Back to School" thing was a rumor, but I'm probably wrong.
As for the Duets show, is there an accurrate list somewhere of the upcoming guests?

I guess i fall within that category, cos with the new and exciting Journey I couldn't care less what Mr Perry is up to...waited far too long! I'm pretty sure it won't be half the quality of the first recordings Journey 2006 could potentially offer.

I'd rather see Steve Perry do NOTHING than be on one of those dumbass "reality" shows. But, that's just me. Usually, the "celebrities" on these shows are has-beens. I don't consider Perry a has-been...but he's letting himself become one.

Oh...believe me...I've lost faith numerous times...but as Carlitto has described (and there are other 'signs' too) ....he's up to something...and I reckon the timing would be perfect in 2007...in a way it hasn't been before.

And before anyone comes in with any crap about high notes and 'raspinesss' and any of that other rubbish that Augeri fans go on about to make their guy seem less mediocre....I also believe The Voice will blow us away with the new material.

He sounded great on TBF....and sounded great on the pitch at the World Series (less so at the rally in Chicago...but he was RUSTY)...and he sounded great on the David Pack record.

His voice might be different from how it was in the 70s and 80s...but I couldn't care less. The Voice has still got more soul than any singer with twice the range.

How has he let himself become one? As you say...he's avoided dumbass "reality" shows...and he doesn't slog around America the whole time squeezing the last few dollars out of 12 songs either.

Perry is a rare example of an ageing rock star who HASN"T made a fool out of himself in the last ten years. No strutting around in leather pants and goatees and fixed botox smiles for The Voice.

Perry was born to be in the Big Leagues - and when he comes back that's exactly where he'll be.

I agree.
He has class.
I can respect that.
I only hope that when he finally reveals what it is he's been working on, that it involves a tour.
I'd love it if that tour was of 'intimate' venues rather than vast places - and I'd be over the moon if he were to perform in England again.
I've been waiting a LONG time.
Hell, I waited 26 years for Neal, Ross and Jonathan to come back.
For the Master, the wait has been even longer.
But something is brewing I'm certain of it.

I love Steve more than just about anyone with a few others on here like TreeTop and Trag (where is she by the way?) and StrungOut, but I really don't think he has the confidence to do what's been suggested on here today. Maybe something small and intimate like a night at the Red Rocks or a night in Vegas, but nothing on t.v. and nothing where the masses can judge him and pick him apart like they always do.

I love those shows :D

There were some big names on American Idol that are still out here/there :D Hey, it's hard to get exposure for these older guys/bands, any kind of publicity is good publicity, IMO

Found it, I love useless information:

http://www.ew.com/ew/report/0,6115,1087 ... 0_,00.html

Lee may not have been the original choice for enrollment — the producers were first turned down by ex-Journey frontman Steve Perry — but he's certainly an inspired one.

http://www.popmatters.com/tv/reviews/t/ ... 0816.shtml

Lee wasn't even the producers' first choice. Steve Perry turned down the series before Lee jumped on board. And based on the first two episodes, the ex-Journey frontman made a very wise choice indeed.

http://tommy-lee-news.newslib.com/story/5395-2334473/

Well, OK, it didn't really happen like that, but it was actually ex-Journey singer Steve Perry who was considered for the role on Tommy Lee Goes To College. But he turned it down, not wanting to be humilated on national television, so they went with Lee.

So...if Perry continues to do nothing music-wise, for say, another 5 years or so...would he still be consdiered "famous"? Maybe, for his former work. "Popular"? Outside of hardcore Journey fans? Not Likely. "Successful"? If he releases no new music, I don't see how he could be still considered successful in his chosen profession. "Useful" I won't even touch. That's a pretty cold definition that really doesn't apply to any human being.
