It seems to me that Steve does something about every 10 yrs. I would not expect 2016 though.Steve said" he was practicing his scales to see what he's got . He either said it in an interview or told it to the Perryville ladies that met him at the WOF star 6 months ago. They would know or go to that site and read posts around 2-6-06 or later.

Perry does something every 10 years? Is there a pattern? I'm being a bit of a smart ass, not intentionally, just need this explained... I've heard it before. Someone enlighten me to this logic, please.

Quote from Powerplay magazine April 2006 -

P.Play "IS THERE NO DESIRE TO GET BACK IN THERE AND RECORD A NEW ALBUM?"
S.Perry "I would love to but there is one issue, and the issue is this: I finally got released from my contract with Sony and I'm no longer signed to anybody, and that's a wonderful freedom.
I'm not sure whether I would like to go back into another long-term arrangement like that.
It's kinda like getting divorced:would you want to go straight back into it again? Some people do, but I'm not one of those kinda guys."

P.Play "JUDGING BY YOUR 'TEN YEARS BETWEEN SOLO ALBUMS' WORK RATE (84 AND 94) WE SHOULD HAVE HAD AN ALBUM IN 2004. YOU'RE KEEPING US WAITING, AREN'T YOU?"
S.Perry "I'm not purposefully keeping anybody waiting. It's taken me all this time to actually want to do this again. I'm not signed but I have really enjoyed writing with some very creative people lately. I have some things that are motivating me to sing again, and I'm trying to follow that lead. I would certainly hope before I die that I would make another solo album, too. Life is very short and getting shorter all the time, so we'll see what happens."

P.Play " ANYTHING THAT YOU WOULD LIKE TO ADD?"
S.Perry "Well, I would like to come over to Europe to catch Orson on one of their club tours, so I might do that. We'll have to wait and see. I'm due for a little bit of a scenery change, I'll tell you that.
So maybe we can catch up then?
Thank you for a great interview and thank you to your readers for caring."

The rest of the interview was rehashing old news about him appearing at the Journey star ceremony and his hip etc.

I e-mailed the editor of the magazine and asked if they had any plans to interview Steve again in the near future and he said, "No."

I truly don't think Steve is going to do anything new, either in the studio or on stage. I would love to be wrong though! :)

Hello Lula- I know there was his 2 solo albums, but, I meant to say '86 ROR , '96 TBF and 2006 more activity ........ Seems his solo albums were 2 yrs prior. What I am trying to say is he lets a long time go by before doing something again . Who knows maybe he wants a solo project or the big speculation maybe even finish out some cities with Journey. I just don't see him doing anything in another 10 yrs.

Thanks squirt. The quoted interview above helps too. I'm in the camp of thinking Perry is pretty much done as a vocalist. It would be a perfect surprise to have him do something new and even sweeter to see him on stage again.

I know it would probably bore most long-time fans but I'd love to hear him do something along the lines of what Rod Stewart's been doing for the last few years; doing classics and American Standards...

I would LOVE to hear Perry singing something like "What a Wonderful World" or even something like Sinatra's "Luck Be a Lady"

It don't have to be modern and all-original for me, I just want to here the man sing again!

Maybe something small and intimate like a night at the Red Rocks or a night in Vegas, but nothing on t.v. and nothing where the masses can judge him and pick him apart like they always do.

I'm here! I'm here!

I'm a workin' chick now....8-5....still have to get used to it.

My thoughts:

1. Love to hear NEW stuff....Steve said once that the LAST thing he wants to be is "a parody" of himself.
2. I truly believe he still "has it" to do it.
3. One doesn't ever REALLY lose their voice; just its "strength" - much like an athlete....just imagine if your fave athlete said "screw it", gained 200 lbs, and turned into a couch potato....they could still do what they FORMERLY did, but they need to get back in shape.

That's what voice lessons and working out are for....TRUST me....

Final thought:

Tree...this pic almost made me fall out of my chair....THANK YOU:

How has he let himself become one? As you say...he's avoided dumbass "reality" shows...and he doesn't slog around America the whole time squeezing the last few dollars out of 12 songs either.

Perry is a rare example of an ageing rock star who HASN"T made a fool out of himself in the last ten years. No strutting around in leather pants and goatees and fixed botox smiles for The Voice.

Perry was born to be in the Big Leagues - and when he comes back that's exactly where he'll be.

has-been

NOUN:
Informal pl. has-beens
One that is no longer famous, popular, successful, or useful.

Keep in mind, I didn't say he WAS one...but he's getting there.

Which definition applies to Perry? Am I missing something here?

So...if Perry continues to do nothing music-wise, for say, another 5 years or so...would he still be consdiered "famous"? Maybe, for his former work. "Popular"? Outside of hardcore Journey fans? Not Likely. "Successful"? If he releases no new music, I don't see how he could be still considered successful in his chosen profession. "Useful" I won't even touch. That's a pretty cold definition that really doesn't apply to any human being.

Well...there are many artists who are still famous even though their output dried up years ago. If an artist becomes a Legend...then time doesn't matter.

Popular? Successful? Look at the huge ongoing sales of the Perry era back catalogue and DVDs....and the number of times his Voice is still heard on classic rock radio. The money is rolling in...

Yes - I agree that "useful" is a bit harsh!

If a new Perry album were to flop horribly...then yes...the "has-been" description might fit. But - until then - it's like saying Elvis is a has been....or Kurt Cobain...or Hendrix.

One has to wonder.....

Postby TRAGChick » Fri Sep 08, 2006 9:13 am

One has to WONDER WHY Steve was with that God-awful band, "Soldier" whatever....

....perhaps to show that IF AND WHEN he does come out with something new, it'll be like:

"See? THIS is how it's done!"

Just my .02....

With all due respect....PLEASE GOD NO! I'd be crushed if the Voice resorted to showtunes or granny's favourites or Xmas records.

I reckon Johnny Cash, Neil Diamond, Paul McCartney and Emmylou Harrris are much more inspiring artists than Rod Stewart. They all hooked up with great producers (such as Rick Rubin and Nigel Godrich) who gave them a modern edge whilst remaining utterly true to the unique qualities in the artists themselves. Suddenly they seeemed 'cool' again....yet they retained their dignity. The recent albums by these oldies are as good as anything they released in the 70s and 80s.

I think Perry was (and possibly still is) a great singer. No doubt. But..."a Legend"? I don't know about that. Among Journey fans? Certainly. Among music fans in general? I doubt it...but I could be wrong. I only have my own feelings on the matter to go on. But, unless he comes out with something new...I think the man is on his way to becoming a has-been. That's just how I see it. I agree to disagree. No problem. 8)

But...

Comparing Perry to Elvis and Jimi Hendrix is a bit of a stretch for me, personally. And you should be slapped for putting Kurt Cobain in that sentence.

Then why are you wasting your time on a Journey board, why don't you go find a nice Perry board where I'm sure you'd be more at home.

I didn't realise that conversation on this board was restricted to the Augeri era of the band.

The idea that Perry is somehow irrelevant to the subject of Journey is the most absurd thing I've heard all day...
