I saw Steve Smith's jazz legacy last Tuesday at Keystone College in Clark Summit, PA. The man is just filthy sick behind the drum kit, the bassist is damn good also. The rest of the band has very good chops themselves. If you're a fan of drumming or jazz go see these guys very good music. I went with my girlfriend who isn't a jazz fan or really doesn't know much about it, and she even said it was real good and the drummer was insanely good.

Very cool. I think a lot of people don't realize just how good Smith is. Yes, he did a great job with Journey...obviously. But, until you REALLY see him play...you just don't realize.

The last time I saw Steve Smith perform live was the "Frontiers" tour....1983.

I tell ya...he looked so relaxed....even looked out a SMILED a few times.

He did a thing where he pressed his right elbow into the snare drum at different pressures, and then struck the drum, to create different pitches...WOW....never saw THAT before...I mean, I married Mark 2 years ago; he's seen everything and he's like, "Yeah they do that sometimes..."....well hey....the first time I ever saw it!

Anything will change the sound of the snare
Snares alos have a damper
well some used to anyway and some people even put strips of cloth or felt in places to fine tune a sound.
Touching the drumhrad ot even going off center will change the sound somewhat.
then there are rims shots to kind of get that punch.

Cool, it's true I have never actually seen someone use ther elbow as a damper
also by pressing w his elbow he is in a sense tigtening the head and it will have a higher pitch same as using the drum key.

That would be a good story to get the 'low-down' on. I've read Steve said in an interview it was because he 'couldn't play to a click'...I don't buy that for a sec....Steve is a 'sick' drummer, and he definitely got exponentially better as time went on, but a click track shouldn't have been the end of the world for him. In listening to alot of the bootlegs, it sounded like Smith was burnt on the gig by the time the Frontiers tour began (his playing is completely over the top on this tour, but so were Perry's vocals...hmm). When I saw Smitty a few years back at a local drum clinic, the whole thing just blew me away! He is just such an awesome drummer, there's no real comparison, in my opinion. He rocked.

Anyway, saw Steve Smith twice with Vital Information, and I told everybody he took drumming to another level. What he did with Journey is not comparable to what he's doing now, different levels.
I'm sure he impressed everyone...
Nora, I'm quite curious about Stew Copeland's performance... I don't like Gizmo music, but how did he play? Did he manage to get his drumming back to what it used to be?

When I think about it you can tell exactly why Journey was as good as they were in the 80's. Neal Schon is one of the most underrated guitarists in the industry. Steve Smith one of the top 25 drummers of all time as voted by a popular magazine. Steve Perry one of the better vocalisits of all time. That's a helleva lot of talent on one band

Welllll....IMO, it's the same old same old.....they got a lead singer who sounded vaguely familiar.....sounds like a guy whose name rhymes with "ring"....?

Yup...he had two sets, set up as "mirror-images" of each other...and he played left AND right-handed!
