Agree that they are technically amazing players.

Does anyone think DT would be a better band if the guys weren't quite so good at their respective instruments? That's not really my opinion, but that seems to be the biggest "knock" on them.

However,I agree they would be much more appreciated (read popular) if they weren't SO good.A paradox, but true...
I guess super-skills can kill the human factor.

Totally different singer and, sound-wise, cheaply engineered but I love every single song on that album. I remember reading a review about this new band back in 88-89 in RIP magazine that said, "A cross between Rush and Queensryche..." I didn't have to read anymore

"When Dream and Day Unite" is a great album but it ranks behind "Images and Words", "Awake", "Metroplis, Pt 2: Scenes from a Memory", and "Train of Thought" for me. The one song that's as good as anything else they've ever done, though, is "Ytse Jam". That instrumental is simply as good as it gets.
Carlitto H@kk wrote:I love them all, its so hard for me to even rank them. Metropilos and the album dedicated to that tune/sory are both phenominal. I even love "6 Degrees of Sep"... Some people just don't get them. I've always said that, to really appreciate a band like DT, you have to be a musician yourself. Being a musician and hearing what they can do is half of it for me...
Would you not love to hear Neal and Petrucci duel on one of those rollcoaster ride, 8 minute DT masterpieces?
conversationpc wrote:"Train of Thought" was a huge step back in the right direction for me. Then I was disappointed again with "Octavarium". I think I've only listened to it once, perhaps twice.
I think something done by those two guys would be incredible. They're somewhat similar, though Petrucci's playing is more grounded in the technical side, while Neal's tends to lean towards the melodic side. I think their styles would sound good together.
Carlitto H@kk wrote:Would that not be an excellent G3 tour... Vai or Satch, Petrucci and Neal... For the Love of God, somebody put this shit together before I die!!!

I agree that DT can get a little too experimental and self-indulgent. Not as bad now as it was for awhile.
How's James LaBrie's voice in a live setting nowadays? He's incredible on album and every concert I've ever heard he's been unbearable.

Ive heard some clips from "Score" and He sounds great, alot of people dont realize he ruptured a vocal chord back i believe right after the scenes tour....he got food poisoning really bad and vomitted too hard, thats why on most recent live stuff he sounded terrible, but i guess he has fully recovered now, i heard him singing "Under a Glass Moon" from images and he sounded just like the recording.

I agree, Andrew. I saw them back in the 90's and it was just a bit too masterbatory for my tastes...the certainly have chops, though.
If I'm in the mood for that feel, I listen to Savatage instead...

If there was ever a terrible vocalist it was that guy from savatage, honestly, they dont hold a candle to DT musically, IMO
