I agree. Though both "Power" and "In the Spirit of Things" are awesome AOR albums, the lack of violin and those classic Kansas arrangements really made them seem like a whole other band. Unfortunately, it was also the era where Walsh's voice started going downhill due in large part to his substance abuse and also using bad technique.

So true.
But these 2 records contain some unnamed gems like Musicatto (a great instrumental) or Rainmaker (the middle instrumental section is nothing short of spectacular).
While different, it's also good hearing bootlegs with Morse playing the violin parts on his guitar, it sounds special. 8)

Agreed. Both great songs and awesome instrumental performances on those tunes.

Morse actually played violin during "Dust in the Wind" in that incarnation of the band, at least on the ITSOT tour. BTW, check out my previous post. I added a link to a video of Kansas during the John Elefante era. Pretty good performance.

Wow! Really? Morse on the violin? Was he able to play all the classic Steinhardt lines in that song? 8)

About John Elefante, I have the VHS from that concert, but I always felt he did a great job but his voice lacked some emotion compared to Walsh. Too straight. But he did a great job.
I always thought Hold on was the natural follow-up to Dust in the Wind, though Chasing Shadows is a great song.
Cheers

I'd have to go back and listen to it but I believe he plays the simpler parts and Walsh plays the other violin parts on the keyboard.

On another note, here's a link to a smokin' version of "Jane" by cover band Fortune. This may be the best cover band I've ever heard. They do tunes by just about all the classic rock bands.

True! Lou Gramm is one of the all time best! I have taken a real liking to his Ready or Not album, I really like all the tracks on there, especially Time, Heartache, If I Don't Have You and Chain of Love.

His singing on "Midnight Blue" is especially soulful. That said, I slightly prefer his "Long Hard Look" album.

Here's a clip from the "Vinyl Confessions" tour doing "Chasing Shadows", which is kind of a "Dust in the Wind" Part 2. It's a great song, with John Elefante as their lead singer. His vocals were actually just as good as Walsh's.

I've never heard this song before. Yes - I see what you mean about "DustIn The wind" Part Two. Thanks Dave.

Just been reading that Elefante was the man Kansas fans "love to hate" - but he sounds good to me.

This is a pretty strong performance John Elefante too, I reckon:

Yeah, I've seen that one as well.

That whole Kansas era came about because Steve Walsh didn't want to sing the Christian lyrics that Kerry Livgren was writing at the time, so he left the band and they hired Elefante, a young Christian himself. Their bass player, Dave Hope, was also a Christian. I like the "Vinyl Confessions" album and the performances from the tour that I've heard have all been pretty good.

"Drastic Measures" was another story, though. It's the worst Kansas album, in my opinion. "Fight Fire With Fire" is a good tune as are a couple of others on that one but it's not that great by Kansas standards.

In 1985 I bought the new Kansas album...and my memory of it was that it had one absolutely great song on it. I can't remember what it was called though...and iTunes UK don't have it...and nor do the big stores here in London.

Any ideas which one it could be? Tough question I know...but are there any obvious stand-out tracks you can think of?

I think it was in '85...will check...
