Opinions can't be criticized. To each one his own.
I admit I was very proud of buying my original TBF cd, I was selling it out to my friends saying "Journey's back and they're on top of charts in US!", and when I recorded it on tape for one of my best friends, huge Sting fan and quite a Steve Perry fan, (He was used to "classic" Journey and Perry solo on Street Talk , he never heard FTLOSM) he went on saying "I like it, but Perry struggles too much, he lost it"
That was his comment. I realized he was partially right. The transport, the emotion, every other thing was still there. But not his voice. When a song had to take off and fly , what he did back then , he couldn't do it anymore. The song stayed there. Take the rockers, Can't Tame the lion and the bonus track for Japan. When you expect him to take it higher, he stays down.
I don't want to raise a fight over his singing ability, he has been the best and is still one of the best voices, but he didn't commit to the fans what the fans wanted. He left us here wanting for more and that's the reason we are all here writing , sadly, because of no records from Mr. Wonderful voice.
He'll be back? I hope. I'm only glad he won't be back with Journey anymore, because if he never felt part of the band he might as well be a solo artist (and by looking at his solo career I don't see an incredible one)
