What are the advantages of losing weight, watching your diet, exercising, and even what foods you would eat or avoid? (oh...and for the record: for Lady Opera singers, it's NOT "Fat"....it's "Zaftig". I'm serious. People would refer to Beverly Sills as such.)

Can't believe I'm gonna admit this but, hey...20 years later; what the hell....

When I was a Senior in HS, I weighed almost 200 lbs.

When I decided to get into Classical Voice Training, my Coach was PLEASED that I weighed that much!! HELL I was TRYING TO LOSE the weight, y'know?? :shock:

He told me that Opera Singers need the "heft" or whatever to give "power" to the voice.

Well, being that size - 14 - the LAST thing I felt was "powerful" :roll:

I agree with all of you who cannot understand this....hell, I LIVED it and still don't understand....I never felt so horrible in my life; had NO energy - and mind you, I took dancing lessons only 2 years before, when I weighed 125 (yeah - figure THAT one out! :oops:

)

IMO, I had ABSOLUTELY NO power behind my voice at that size; I was constantly tired.

He actually got PISSED at me when I got down to 140!

I believe that one incident propelled me to be a Rockin' Chick.

Oops...my bad.... :wink:

The advntages of exercising/being in shape? Let's see:

1. You LOOK better.
2. You FEEL better.
3. You have more confidence (see 1 & 2 :wink:

)
4. It's psychologically gratifying - especially for Women - when you see the Size Numbers drop.
5. You can actually SEE ab muscles....so you KNOW you've got the strength where it counts - since the abs are the TRUE support of the voice, you KNOW you're a Powerhouse!! LOL

Hope this shed some light and made sense...
