I realize Jeff Scott Soto and sliced bread are synonomous around here, BUT in reality the ONLY way that the band JOURNEY makes a 'real' comeback is with Steve Perry as their lead singer.

Steve Perry bring Neal, Jonathan, Ross & Deen instant credibility. Bottoom Line thats it!!

To 90% or more of people who know who Journey is they know the VOICE. That voice belongs to Mr. Perry.

Fred Flintstone could be playing guitar. No one really cares who the guitar player is.

I have NO DOUBT that the current group calling themselves Journey are talanted hardworking media and fan friendly individuals.

They may put on a GREAT show. But to say that their warmup 90 minute set is the GREATEST Journey show ever, shows how memories fade with time and the nursing home with a dribble rag hanging from your collar as someone changes your Depends briefs cant be far around the corner for people posting this non sense.

Maybe you want it to be the GREATEST Journey show ever. But think back!!

For this rendition of Journey to hit BIG and be relevant today what has to happen is another trend in 'Supergroups' ( Damn Yankees, Bad English) and then Journey management must make a quick name change.

Otherwise their ONLY hope is Steve Perry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Steve Perry is an indolent old fart who prefers to lead a sedentary life sitting on the couch eating sweet n' salty pork crisps .

Unless Journey can work out the logistics of touring from Perry's living room, it simply ain't gonna happen.

Nah, the way he uses those feet for brakes, he'd probably be better off being a drummer. He'd make a hell of a player with a double-bass drum.

Very few could. Regardless, Lincoln's a good guitar player, especially without the restraints of one Mr. Steve Perry.

It always amazes me how little respect Perry gets. These postings that without Schon, Journey isn't Journey is ludicrous! The reality is that Journey was a complete UNKNOWN band with Schon in the same position he's in today before Herbert forced Perry into Journey! That's a fact that cannot be disputed.

Incidentally, I don't believe Perry has any interest in being part of Journey again. I also believe if Perry actually wanted to record music again that he probably would have done so, long before now. That said, Perry doesn't have to do another thing in his career to still be considered one of the greatest voices the music world has ever seen! His record speaks for itself. No matter what happens with Journey, when the book is closed, permanently...Perry's era in Journey will be the only one that has any relevance for the majority of fans of Journey music. I think because of that, you should show the guy a little more respect. The reality is that there are probably less than 1% (some of the hard core rockers, pre Perry...and some of the yahoo "wiggle" weirdos, post-Perry) of all Journey fans who know about Journey for any other reason, other than Perry's voice!

Even though I'm a Perry fan (and while I think that a one-time Perry with Journey mini tour would sell huge and be f***ing GREAT)....IMO for an on-going basis, I think Jeff is the man to front Journey now....he's definately got Perry's charisma. Journey like to tour hard and Perry doesn't -period. Realistically I don't think the chemistry would be the same either.....that was a one-time gift we got! Thank gawwd the visuals/audios are still out there to enjoy. So currently I see them as separate entities. Saying that....I'd love to hear more from the Voice too. I'd definately pay to see what the man's still got!

I'm knocking Perry, and hoping he NEVER records again with Journey, because of his style of songwriting now and what HE prefers to sing/perform. Look at his solo efforts, look at TBF...
Look what happened to ROR once he took control and brought in the Huey Lewis flunky to help produce:
Vocals: AWESOME! Songwriting and style: Mediocore!
The magic he had with Neal and then later with Cain is gone.

Sorry, but I don't agree with you. I think your rational is a bit off, here. Do you seriously think the casual Journey fan (and that would be most of the people attending these concerts) has any clue at all that Journey is now on their second lead singer since Perry exited stage left? I think one of the things people who visit sites like these seem to forget, is that 99% of fans of a particular band don't come to internet message forums to discuss the goings on of a particular band!

If you don't believe me...Read one of Jeff's recent postings. He said himself in the posting that most people he meets are "stunned" to find out that Perry is no longer a member of Journey. The guy hasn't been in the band in almost 10 years and most fans still have ZERO clue that Perry isn't the frontman of Journey! I would imagine if Journey sold out a 10,000 seat venue for a concert that less than 500 of those 10,000 people have any clue about the history of Journey and who the lead singer presently is or why Perry is no longer with the band, etc. That leaves a whole lot of concert attendees who are simply feeling a bit nostalgic and wanting to be transported back to 1983 for a few hours!

With all due respect to Jeff, I don't think Journey is selling most of their concert tickets to fans who are going to see Jeff perform, and I think he'd be the first to tell you this (for the record, I would gladly pay to see Jeff perform, as I think the guy is great).

You and I don't disagree much, here. Although, I actually liked a few of the tracks off of ROR. "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" is every bit as good as "Faithfully", and that's high praise! In terms of Perry's solo material...Whether you liked the music or not...he had at least three top forty hits that I know of from "Street Talk", and that's a hell of a lot more than Journey has produced without Perry's voice or any member of Journey has produced with any of their solo projects!

I definitely do agree that the magic that Perry, Schon, and Cain had is gone, forever. It pains me to say that, but it is soooo true! I think because that magic is gone, no incarnation of Journey will ever see commercial success again. That doesn't mean I'm not still happy to listen to Perry's classic music being sung by JSS.

Are you saying that they've been touring and selling thousands of seats every year since 1998 because 90% of the people who go to the shows don't know Perry left? Do you discount the possibilty that a lot of those ticket buyers have been repeat attendees?

I'm not trying to sell or imply that most concert goers since '98 have been going to see Augeri or JSS, either but I think you overstate the number of attendees for the last 9 years that don't yet know that Perry's at home only "thinking about doing something every day."

It is the band as whole that keeps this thing a viable, solvent live act.

Excellent post! 'Course I'm crying my eyes out. But it's all true. Love his voice, not a big fan of his musical stylings....
I'm SOOO ready for Journey to kick some ass. I would give just about anything if that could be with Perry, but I think he forgot how somewhere along the line.

They are going to see or hear the Journey name. They know the songs that will be sung. Thats what they are going to hear.

All the advertisement for the concerts have Perry on the vocals and people think 'man I used to love that song lets go'.

Add to this the price of a ticket includes songs from Def Leppard, Foreigner, Styx , REO or whoever is on the festival venue and its worth the price to relive ones youth.

What I find absolutely insane is that intelligent people are posting that they have seen a Steve Perry led Journey playing 2.5 + hours as a headline act singing the hits he made famous back when the band was ruling the music world and people are saying that now playing a 90 minute warmup set is 'THE GREATEST SHOW THAT ANY JOURNEY HAS EVER DONE'.

That is totally insane.

Finally, outside of the LA area and a few other larger cities if Journey now plays alone they sell between 2,500 & 5,000 seats. Just like the other more popular butts & guts bands.

Yes, In St. Paul for the Main Event Tour they used Steve Perrys Journey version of Dont Stop Believein& Lovin Touchin Squeezin along with DDY's Styx version of Come Sail Away coupled with REO's Keep On Loving You to promote the tour.

Also, has anybody heard an advertisement for a Journey concert since 1998 that had Perry vocals in the commercial?
Never heard one for this lineup yet but I must've heard 35 since '98 on the radio and they all had Augeri.

All bands of this ilk admit that new records are only to help supplement the income, stay creatively vibrant, and give something back to the fans. They admit that touring is their major $ maker.
This is the way it has become since radio became corporate.

You are correct here. The fans are going to see the "band" Journey perform. Not just the vocalist.

I think this seems to be the major difference in opinion between alot of us on this board. Some place way more emphasis on going to see the singer perform as opposed to the rest of the muscians in the band. Others, like my self, go to see the complete package (vocalist, guitarist, keyboardist, bassist, percussionist.) With Journey its as much about the music as the vocals, at least for me it is.
