For whatever reason, the band has stopped playing newer material.
Maybe they didn't suit JSS's voice.
Or maybe the band wants to "sell" JSS to the Perry-accustomed casual masses first, and then proceed with introducing their own new material.
Much like Azoff mngt, the line of thinking seems to be "if we pretend Steve Augeri never existed, perhaps he'll simply go away."
bionic wrote:It may be that with Steve used as the scapegoat they do want to move and forget the problems of the past evan to the extent of not playing Augeri era material! It seems that in history of Journey Steve is the part they are most ashamed of and want to forget.

How cool would it be if they actually gave Andrew the whole shit? And let him break the story here on MelodicRock? I would say that possibility does exist...although the chances are slim. We'll see.

Knowing how much Neal shoots from the hip, I bet he'd love to set the record straight and clear the air.
Just look at how much he rags on Perry and airs his dirty laundry in interviews these days.
Here's the rub - Neal can't come clean about Augeri's tape-use without implicating himself in the process.
Would love for him to be a man and actually make amends with his fans.
This might sound a tad presumptous, but I firmly believe he owes the fans that much.

Neal is a SUPERB guitarist (in spite of often making idiotic statements!), but at the end of the day, people aren't buying Journey cd's (or any other band, for that matter) to listen to guitar riffs. It is a VERY small minority of fans who are ever drawn in by guitar riffs, drums, etc. I think when it's all said and done, all Neal really cares about is his ability to tour and "pay the bills", as he has said so many times. I think Neal should probably spend less time talking smack about Perry (which I still don't quite understand...Isn't Neal the one who said something along the lines that Perry had an "open invitation" to re-join Journey at any point?) and more time being grateful that Perry made him so famous!

But you see John, that's where Mr Schon's ego shine through! He really isn't grateful. He really does think that it is and should be all about him. I've watched him watch the fans waiting for Steve, the disgust on his face is quite clear. He now has Jeff on his knees at least once or twice a night hailing his guitar riffs. All hail the GOD! Someone wrote on the other site about the band dealing with the strees and heartache over Steve's medical issues.......yeah Neal is dealing with it by running up and down the stage like he's 20 again. It is so obvious what happened. Just re-read his Perry bashing. He should ditch the purple shirt and keep the green one. It is quite reflective of his feelings.

Maybe you should just find another band to support if you hate them so much.

I don't hate the band or the music. Just hate what is obviously going on. I am disappointed that the very man that brought this music to me so many years ago is letting everything go down the way it is. He is neglecting the very fans that feed him. But that is his and this management's MO.

Guess you're entitled, but once you see them with JSS I think you will be able to get past it. Even 13 is past it, and he is the biggest Augie fan on this board.

Love that Generations lineup but it's over (I think) and I'm fine with it, long's we keep rolling on with the current crew, lead vocalist included.
The Neal bashing I understand ZERO of, though.

Rumor has it, from his very own soldier, that Neal knew nothing of "tapegate". He has been the only constant in this band for 30+ years and he wants me to believe he didn't play a part in the making of this decision?!?!?!??!?!? That, I have a problem with. C'mon. Eat crow admit it and move on. Don't drop it at the feet of the lowest guy on the totem pole. Be a TEAM!
MindFreak wrote:You say that rumor has it, that Neal said he knew nothing of "tapegate"......... I'm in shock!
NO WAY FOR ONE MINUTE do I believe that NEAL SCHON doesn't know what each and every employee of his is doing!!!!!
I believe the tapegate. But I also believe THE ENTIRE BAND knew it was being done.
This is one RUMOR I choose to ignore.

Neal did not say that... Dean at one point thought that maybe no one in the band but Augeri actually knew about the extent of the tape use. I'm not sure if he still thinks so.
Red13JoePa wrote:maybe JSS is hailing Neal's playing on his own? From what little I know about him, he doesn't seem like the type of lad to stand having a gun pointed to his head on anything...not that him being forced to homage Neal's playing is plausible anyway.

Someone else posted that he should try doing Journey's lead vocals. That might just work. Clapton isn't the best vocalist but it's the combination of voice and guitar that is unique. That would get his name out there, for better or for worse.

You can't be serious! Have you heard Neal sing?? The guy is a guitarist for a reason! I think Neal is a superb guitarist. I also think even Neal is smart enough to never think he has the vocal talents to sing Journey's catalog of music! Journey's catalog is one that is EXTREMELY challenging to sing, even for the most talented vocalists. It is simply not music that should ever be sung by those who aren't talented enough vocalists. There is a reason Neal has been paying his billls through the 6 string all these years. Nothing would alienate Journey fans more than Neal taking over vocals! I certainly wouldn't ever listen to Journey again (unless it was a Perry-sung track)!

Their new material could be with Schon on lead vocals in whatever key he needs and the old material could be done by all the guys in harmony. All the years of backup vocals would make it a shoein for them. It would give Journey a fresh new sound with the old hits and Schon a chanch to really shine.
His vocals only lack confidence. You can hear it in his voice. He sings scared.
It's a fun thought.
